Gainesville Thread: Help yourself to the fridge, but don't touch my beer

true. i can see something at the estates or anywhere else close to campus being successful

yeah especially over the fall. And i mean if we do it early enough like the first month and a weekend thats not a football weekend all the freshmen would probably be excited for it also

Can’t really do much when you’ve had a trip across the pond planned months ago.

We could, but so far the only local FG tourneys were free. Then there’s the thing about consistency: you need to be there almost every week to have a chance to win, and the new guys probably won’t put up much of a fight and quit after the first week.
Who knows though. I hope I’m wrong.

EDIT: is anyone here actually staying at the Estates? All I know about them are pool parties, I can’t see a tourney happening there. XD

That’s true but i mean before the tourney there could be casuals for an hour or whatnot and then like if they want to get better we could also refer them to practice at rob’s place to get better and whatnot.

Meh, I just think that in FGs people really hate to lose and not be salty/admit it. Or at least that’s how I generalize the CoD/LoL/HoN/whatever guys at UF.

So, true. However, if you mentally take out the “Winning is all that Matters” attitude, you become less salty and you focus on the game more. Use that saltiness and turn it into thoughts on why you won/lost. It worked well for me, I’m playing a lot better than I was playing a few months back.

Same. I honestly like to go even with my opponents.

Petey put me on some hot shit with Akuma that I can use with E. Ryu as well.

Most people don’t have the right attitude to play FG’s competitively. Still if we host something like that there will be at least a few people who will be interested and come to play more often with us.

Most of them will just think like “Man those guys make the game so boring with their frame data and combooosss… I just want to do some ultras and drink some beer”. Not that we are super serious or anything but it’s probably too serious for most people.

well i mean i don’t know too much about frame data besides the MvC3 guide that i bought on release that and I don’t really know how it is in SSF4:AE. But all that I know is that as comes with practice, i just know subconsciously what moves are punishable based on the distance i am to certain characters and what moves are punishable on with and based on match ups and stuff just from playing etc.
And I mean, people could play for fun and could slightly be moved towards playing competitively if they are really into it and such.

And i’m mean i’m sure if we host something we could get a pretty good turnout, and i know we are pretty much all about SSF4:AE and Marvel and to an extent Arcana Hearts. But i’m sure there’s some really good MK player around here and whatnot.

I mean like i could probably send some emails via fb to all the people who said that they were attending the game night that was a few weeks ago and link them to the first page of this if i’m not busy and i could just tell them if they have any questions they could ask me or something like that.

This. If people really have the drive in them to get better, the least they could do was ask you guys for your gamertags and where to find knowledge that will make them better. It wasn’t the case last year, and it sure doesn’t sound like it this year.

I’m really partial towards the 1982 thing to take off so that even if our scene doesn’t grow, we can extend our networks to guys from Ocala, Tally, Jacksonville, etc. We could have them at common areas in residential areas too, but it just doesn’t feel as right for me, especially when you take in account other monthlies like Will’s Pub.

btw Phil, I’m sorry I always bring a lot of negativity when I post about the scene. I want it to grow as much as everyone else here, but I considering that we had a few tourneys with good turnouts for the past year, I don’t think we can expect much if they don’t have it in them. As always though, I’ll be glad the day I’m fully proven wrong.

No that’s all right. It’s always good to look at both sides of this issue. I’m just want to see that like lets say we get the word out or something and do have something lets say in the fall i would hope that a good number of people show up and/or people that are at least competent and know that with alittle practice and whatnot could possibly become competitive or that could at least compete competitively.

I guess once I try and if i see first hand after trying that the scene isn’t as big as I think it is or that there aren’t alot of new serious people then I might not be as positive on my outlook as expected lol.

Also another thing I forgot to add.
There is a possibility that more people than we think know about a competitive scene in Gville. They might know about Daigo in 2004, the EVO championship series, and even the very recent CEO. But truth is, some people don’t want to do much more than stream monstering it up and playing online. Back in SFIV, I used to go to the GFAQs as much as I go on SRK now (lol), and looking back now I’ve gotten exponentially better while a good amount of guys there have just barely improved, except now they bitch about the twins instead of Sagat, while learning nothing on how to play the matchup.

lol i started out the same way. I went to the gamespot forums to learn more about MvC3 and play against some people there. Heard about streaming and such and saw a few tourneys and WNF’s and such and they seemed really fun, then they from gamespot forums I heard about SRK lol.

O and i still go on gamespot/gamefaqs just to read some topics and play against some people there online haha.

Well I think I’m just going to give it a shot because it doesn’t hurt to ask. i’m going to send some fb emails to the people who said they would attend and maybe attend and hopefully some people respond back and whatnot. I already messaged 5 people but supposedly fb said i messaged people way to fast and over their limit which I never knew so they suspended me from sending pvt emails for a few hours lol.

Not sure how good they are for MVC but for SF, someone had setup a GFAQs lobby and when half decent players started showing up there, I pretty much ignored my GFAQs account lol.

Has anybody from GG even talked to you guys (or vice versa) to see if someone could help expanding their fighters group? It’s just as lacking as the CoD one (which blows my mind really).

There’s a pretty good amount of people on the gamespot/gamefaqs boards that are good at Marvel actually to my surprise.

And nope i haven’t heard anything from GG

I talked to them before the tournament about which version of SF they were running. They said “We have one copy of regular sf4 and one copy of super street fighter 4.” They never heard of arcade edition.

I almost want to contact them and offer to handle everything they do related to fighting games.
