Gainesville Thread: Help yourself to the fridge, but don't touch my beer

Aren’t you finishing school soon though?

EDIT: but yeah, sure, I don’t see why not.

I’ve got a Youtube channel that I’ve put a lot of tutorials on for new players and shit (it’s really geared toward new players though nothing advanced) youtube.com/mingtongzhi

I’m like really aware of how hard it is to get into FG’s which is why I made the tutorials and shit; there is this huge barrier where even if you want to get good you don’t know how or what to do. There are certainly people out there in Gainesville that want to improve and don’t know to check the SRK sub-forum buried ten sub-forums deep to find this thread. Then some will find the thread and be too afraid to call us up and come to a meet-up. Some may come and lose every match and then not want to come again etc. The main thing though is you can’t really expect more than 5% of the people who would see us playing at 1982 or a common room of an apartment complex really want to do what we are doing. As long as you understand that going in, it’s worth doing hoping we’ll catch the people who are actually wanting to do it, but you don’t want to scare people off with like “YEAH WE ARE PLAYING TO WIN OKAY THIS MOVE IS MINUS FOUR ON BLOCK AND YOU CAN PLINK IT AND” etc. etc. Not saying I’ve seen any of you guys do this, but I often see people get like gung-ho trying to force their friend or roommate to get into fighters or competitive starcraft or whatever and they end up essentially just putting them off completely by overwhelming them with information.

sounds like rob lmao

wtf is an apology doing on the gainesville thread

It does lol.
Hey Phil is pretty new to the scene compared to most of us. And you wanna bring some more people here? Tone down the shit talk. /srsbusiness

I don’t think we have to push the competitive mentality too hard since even the bigger scenes in FL are pretty casual friendly. The tutorials are awesome btw; it’s formatted really well and doesn’t skip over crucial concepts.

Here’s the sad truth. There are other people in town that play these games, they just don’t want to come out and play because they just enjoy playing at a level they currently are. Which is completely fine for them, more power to them if that’s what they enjoy, but I sucks for us. Me, thahn and jon were talking at the GG tournament and some girl came up to us and was like “omg what is that” or something, pointing at my fightstick. I told her it was a fightstick for fighting games and she was amazed that something like that even existed. Another instance was when I was playing my second match in the tournament some random guy came up to me as I was getting ready to play and said, “hey is that an arcade stick?” and asked me how much it was. I told him I got it when it first came out at $150 and just said “holy cow, many you guys are really hardcore, I don’t think I could ever have something like that just to play”

I think people see us when we go to gatorgaming tournaments and they could be intimidated by us not only because we may be better than them, butjust because we have fightsticks or something. This makes them not even come up to us and say hey “I wanna play with you guys.” This also happened at last year’s tournament…some girl came up to me and asked me how to do a combo in a match that I had just played. She was like, “yeah, that looks way harder on a stick, I don’t know if I could evenr do that.” I also overheard a guy that was talking to the TO and said, “Hopefully we can beat all these guys with their fightsticks and everything!”

I could be completely wrong about all of this, but it’s just odd that people actually single us out because WE have fightsticks or whatever. I’m not implying that sticks are better than pad, respects to our pad warriors Phil, Tran and Dave, but I guess they think they wouldn’t have fun just because we may be better than them.

It’s just a huge barrier to get into and it’s not like jumping into an FPS game where you are on a team and can dick around. You are in a “small box” with an opponent who is out to kill you as fast as he can. Most people don’t have fun with that kind of thing. Yes the sticks that are larger than consoles don’t help!

edit: Actually the 2d fighter tutorial skips over safejumping but I lost the original files so I can’t edit them. A lot of the footage in that tutorial is pretty dated… like doing weird combos and setups but 90% of the information is still good so I’m not going to bother remaking it.

I don’t think it’s much different from other competitive gaming scenes, except competitive fighting barely gets any mainstream coverage outside EVO. Besides Daigo and Justin, almost nobody outside the community can name other players. Except for EG and col.CC, nobody outside the community knows about the competitive gaming teams like EMP, DMG, etc.

Matt, it’s not odd. I’d say we’re the hipsters of competitive gaming. Going back when I first found out about sticks, I also thought everyone using sticks would shun casuals just like that. Sure, the scene is growing and it’s bigger than ever, but still doesn’t hold a candle to the numbers of WoW/SC2/LoL players. Then there’s shit like the Kotaku article and this:

Hey Rob, you should seriously consider running the fighters section at GG. You could host free tournaments (since you can’t really have a entry fee I think) monthly and we wouldn’t really need to go to 1982 for it. Plus I don’t think people from outside UF are barred from entering.

Bro she wanted your johnson she didn’t care about what you were holding.

I’ll be here until either the end of summer or the end of december. I hesitate to take on more responsibility right now, but I could probably host tournaments in my apt’s common area once I finally get around to asking. Its up to you youngin’s and gainesville lifers to take over the reins.

Also someone needs to bring a console/games tomorrow since I’d really like to get a third setup going. Waiting for my turn to get bodied in AE isn’t fun when there’s 6 people on one setup. I got the monitor (just got an Evo Asus) I just need the extra consoles/games.

3s pweaz

Yeah i am new compared to everyone else but I think I’m here to stay in the FG scene, hopefully. Like i’ve played fighting games before like MvC2, and KOF series and other Fg’s younger but it was really only casually. But ever since MvC3 i’ve been really interested in it. I guess you could say that was my gateway game. And for the reason i don’t play SF4 is because i’m 2 yrs too late IMO so I’ll be at a huge disadvantage w/ matchup experience etc and also I’m not really into slower paced fighting games. But I def can’t wait for SF X T.
And yeah the scene back in south fl is casual also. Like i know there’s the LAN center and they have this free open space in the back where they have lots of tv monitors where they set up and stream and stuff. And flash metroid usually shows up there every week.

I’ll bring my 360 tomorrow.

Edit: Beaten to the punch.

are any of the Tallahassee people showing up?

Looks like petey’s main in Soul Calibur 5 just got announced.

Not that I know of. I’m sure Chris will post when he decides to come down.

insta-mained. dunno why u said that should be my main but she looks high tier. small weapon = a11 moves. i wonder how many ppl will get that…

and phil i wouldn’t recommend u pick up sf4 this late in the game but that doesnt mean u cant play at robs. id say its a good way to try out stick too.

Sorry Phil that I didn’t want to play MvC3 after you beat me, it was honestly like my first time playing and I realized that I absolutely hated how it worked. There are no footsies and it just didn’t appeal to me at all.

We have enough sticks if you bring your 360? I can bring my PS3 and one PS2/3 stick, if you bring your 360 how many 360 sticks will we have total between two 360’s?

I have work until three tomorrow, but I should be there to play eventually.

Hey that’s alright dood, no worries. And yeah MvC3 is totally different system then street fighter. I kinda feel that Marvel is kinda similar to blazblue in a few ways idk. Because when I went back to blazblue i felt like i got better blocking and stuff like that.

Wow I never thought I would be doing this but…I’m actually practicing BB. Looks like I’ll be bringing that tomorrow as well XD
