(GA Thread) We punch fools in the FACE!

What gimmicks and shenanigans are you speaking of?

For some reason, my big problem with Street Fighter and other 2-D fighters is joystick motions. There’s very rarely anything like a dragon punch or a double-quarter-circle-forward in Virtua Fighter(I know Vanessa and Pai have nothing of the sort). I can do a dragon punch motion and a double-quarter-circle-forward, but doing them in a split second is hard for me.

Well I played this brazillian player who use a lot of A-Bison head stomp shenanigans, really annoying to deal with, since I don’t see a lot of Bison period in A3. Also rock zoning with Cody. Nothing majorly gimmicky, but annoying to deal with. And I had problems dealing with it, because I rarely see people either a) using those characters b) using the characters in the way they are using them. A3 is an old game, so knowledge about how to counter some things evades me.

So anything you have trouble with is shenanigans and gimmicks? Sounds similar to the reasons people call things cheap…

Oh, and in case you didn’t know, that Akuma player in the video you posted is Kindevu

Doesn’t Kage and Shun-Di have fireball and dragonball motions respectively. And DP motions are not as hard as successive crouch dashing.

I remember I learned this Akira combo

1 frame knee, p, p, d/b, d/b, b,f+P. Really hard to do, nothing in SF requires that type of timing.

Also, I don't know Pai too well, but a lot of her combos rely on a buffered crouch dash. I know in order to connect her While rising P,K in a combo, you need to do df, df, F + P+K. Which is pretty much nearly identical to a DP

PErhaps they made the inputs more lenient in VF 5, a game I haven’t played. But I know moves were very hard to execute in VF4 evo, and VF3 (the two VF games I have the most experience in).

if you have problems with DP, just do two fireball motions without hitting foward on the second motion. You’ll buffer a DP. It’s not as efficient as doing the motion accurately, but that’s how most newbies do DP. It is an overlap because you may get a super instead, but you can use that shortcut. In SF4 I believe they have the shortcut where you just need to hit df, df -+punch. Which is the same way you would crouch dash in VF

Oh no, if it’s effective then it’s effective. I wouldn’t call it cheap. It’s a limitation in how I play. I would prefer that matches be 100% footsies and be played on the ground most of the time. So of course certain crossup shenanigans throw me off when I’m playing. In some games I can shut them down, and in others I lack enough experience with the game to deal with them. In A3, it’s about 50/50. In SF4, I can’t deal with most mixups and shenanigans, which is why I’m generally conservative about doing money matches in that game.

V-Sakura ftw

Just beat EMP Kreymore, that obviously means I’m pro

That might be because you play Guile and Sims, two characters who have absolute zero cross over defense. Guile’s flash kick is easy to trick, even if it doesn’t on a properly timed cross up, it will be stuffed. EX flash kick wiffs even more than regular flash kick does and it still is prone to being stuffed out despite being an EX move.

Sims on wake up has it even worse in sf4. You really have backdash, focus back dash, teleport and block as your only wake up reversal options. He doesn’t even have a flash kick that guile has and teleport isn’t instant and can be beat out on wake up.

Other than that you could foward + lk with guile or slide with sims on wake up or dash to get out of cross ups but certain cross ups stop these options and get stuffed out if almost any other cross up is timed right.

Either way, for the minister of defense, you play only characters with terrible wake up defense.

Another thing just to note, backing into the corner with guile in sf4, is not a good idea. Anyone can cross up anyone in the corner in SF4, even big characters like gief and honda and sagat. Also guile really depends on his movement speed and lateral movement to help his zoning. Gief, boxer, sagat, honda, and many others in this game are really powerful when they corner you so I’d advise not cornering yourself. Without backdash and space to walk the space and options you get off of your sonic boom are pretty much nil. If your don’t have space to move, Guile’s sonic boom is nothing more than an annoyance that isn’t going to beat anyone.

Really good Guile players in sf4 use the space in the middle of the stage to set up their backhands, jump ins and c.mk/c.lk to get their damage and regain and maintain their spacing. Once they are backed in to the corner they either use knockdowns, throws, and cross ups to get out or they die pretty fast. The arenas in this game are huge so running and controlling the center of the ring is really important against characters like boxer and gief and honda. Guile can do this with his easy to understand and easy to apply tools reasonably well. He just can’t do this while getting huge damage at the same time. Thats and his lack of effective tools against jump ins and cross overs are his biggest weakness.

So, am I going to EP by myself tomorrow?

I can’t make it. I have to work during the day.

I’m staying home, sleeping all day, and playing Mass Effect when I wake up in mid-afternoon.

Mike can you bring Street Fighter Alpha 3 (or anyone else coming to Revival). I’d love to play you again Mike; your Cammy is ridiculous.

So…

whos playing KOF 12 when it drops?

Definitely wanna try it. Haven’t been into KOF since '98, but I think I should give SNK a chance.

It’ll be a while, though. Games cost $60 new on PS3, and that’s a price I’m not willing to pay. I buy my games used and old. I don’t know if I’d have SF4 if my girlfriend didn’t buy it for me.

Looks like we’ll have a game to watch after all.

i will take you up on that offer and thank you sir, really.

thank you sir

thanks and see you 2row.

i am and see you 2row.

I’ll be at Waba on Sunday for Street Fighter. Just a show of hands, though: if I bring Virtua Fighter 5, will anyone play it?

I played the hell out of virtua fighter 5 when it first came out on PS3, i haven’t really touched it in a while though, if it’s there I’ll play a few, though I’m sure my Jeffery is kinda rusty

Awesome. I’ll just be bringing the 360 copy of the game along with my memory unit and stick.
