the MLG event is for tekken, halo, and smash. which i guess it coincides with this event’s tekken and smash tournament. But i cant help but notice how much of this event’s emphasis is on capcom games. you guys are putting up bigger cash prizes than EVO is for SSF4 and TvC and getting like a gajillion guests. Like you said this event has been hyped/planned for over a year and you have people flying and changing schedules already for it as far as i can tell.
So how are you gonna tell me that a tournament from a group that has little to nothing clashing with this tournament is going to cause you to change location and dates. not once have i seen or heard mention from the communities your catering to about the MLG tournament being a deciding factor. maybe theres something else behind the decision we dont need to know about but this is how people are gonna perceive it.
Hell if anything you putting on this event and making MLG’s event shitty might actually make them consider doing Capcom games. im not sure if thats what people want but it couldnt hurt.
I know its hard a decision, and we are not changing locations. just the date, pushing it back a bit and adding some more things to make it better. everything else is still as planned. I have received quite a few messages from some folks saying that its great we are trying to work with folks and are trying to do the best we can for the community. We make these decisions with difficult planning. We are able to assist folks with altering their plans and we are very good and working things like this out.
We just decided in the end it would benefit everyone. We want the Smash and Tekken Communities to be able to happy - MLG originally had planned on SSFIV, it looks like now they are not doing it. while we waited to be absolutely sure for us to make this decision. I hope you all understand we do this to make sure everyone is happy - a small few might not like it, but the majority will understand.
I have also stipulated for the future with them, that planning of dates for major events of this kind must be done appropriately with the groups that effect the community and for the future if they land their dates on top of ours, we will not budge or move them and they will have to face the brunt. This is me being diplomatic at the moment.
Other factors that allowed us to do this were our hotel had made mistakes in our booking and were begging us to use some of our space for one of their larger clients, which we refused to do. This allows us to work with them as well, and the costs associated are not as high due to their error. but it lets us GPX come out on top at the end with these two companies.
I am here to help and serve all of you along with our great staff to make the transition a simple and easy one.
I already bought my tickets to this thing. Can I have a refund? If not can we put you on the tournament director ban list? This was only a month away and I bought my tickets in December.
I would say this. Gamme has made a wise decision on changing dates and I support it. Reasons why: MLG has just started picking up fighting games and pay out to top 8 all the time. Mlg has tides with espn meaning they can take any game main stream if they want to. The have guaranteed checks waiting to be grabbed. If I was gamme, I wouldnt want to fight them either. Not saying anybody got bullied just saying nobodys wants to divide the community and force people to go to 2 different tournaments. I like the sept 24-26 date simply because cali vs texas 2 is sept 4 and half of houston is going to gamme that I know of so regardless of the date change, this event will be SICK…
From what I heard about the last MLG was that Tekken wasn’t even all that hype…
You guys are having melee (something MLG isn’t) so im sure you are going to get a pretty decent turnout for both brawl and melee, especially when MLG supposedly has laggy TV’s. Players like M2K play both events so im sure he would chose this over MLG. A lot of top players didn’t get a kick out of having random seeds there…
You guys are the better tournament, why move your date for an inferior tournament? That’s like me having a local tournament the same day as MLG, so they move there’s to a later date.
There is nothing wise about planning an event over a year in advance and changing it no matter what. It could turn out to be the story of the Boy who cried wolf. EVERY person who already booked their flight and such will now lose money, and the next date that gets set all of those same people will be too scared to book again. MLG is a joke when it comes to fighting games. They should stick to HALO and FPS because that is what they always have and always will only cater to.
The “VP” Of MLG has said himself he wants Street Fighter to be a part of their “community” but needs help from the players. That’s total BS, If you’re the VP of a company and you already know how huge SF has become again since 4 has come out, then it would be a no brainer to add Street Fighter to their “prestigious” line up. The only idea they get right is one of my big beliefs is when a MAJOR Fighting game tournament has over 500 or so entrants, that their should be a top 8 payout. Top 3 is not worth it for travel.
I was a pro player fpr a the TCG VS System card game quite a few years ago. They had top 75 get paid. That’s massive. What’s holding back major Fighting game tournaments from getting even more mainstream is the top 3 only payout. Of course for only the average 10 dollar buy in is what keeps it at top 3 but still, things would be awesome if they had more sponsorships and prizes awarded to more then top 3 which is why MLG support for fighting games would be amazing but it’ll probably never happen.
I was planning to help and support Gamme since I live in Orlando as an organizer and still will, but this could be really heartbreaking for GPX, myself and the entire community. What about all those Voice Actors who were guaranteed to come, that’s a lot of people and hype. IS MLG going to pay for all of their expenses? MLG’s event isn’t even in the same USA REGION. This is a really tough break that I feel very strongly about especially when you have to change dates with just about a month to go to a date over 2-3 months later. This is just terrible.
Well, something needs to made official real soon. People are buying tickets, taking time off of work, etc just to attend this event. I hate last minute changes, and I don’t care that I am in Orlando either. If it’s happening on a different date then I need to schedule accordingly. I’m not going to register until something is final.
MLG = Lies and fairy tales my friend. Believe half of what you see and none of what you heard, and what happened to lady gaga?? I know that bitch don’t take no refunds??
Here’s in hoping that it’s still in Orlando by September and that we actually have japan still come out to Florida at all. I was really looking forward to not having to go to Vegas this summer to see top tier play from japan : ( , str8 sad face.
so you are taking one of the first majors for the biggest fighting game to hit in god knows how long and pushing it back to after evo. where alot of people are already gonna blow there savings to go to since its the big show even though this tourney could have contended with it. This is quite possibly the worst business decision and community decision i have ever witnessed. This could have been the tournament where wong or some no name coulda finally toppled the japanese and you are changing it to a horrible date because MLG bullied you with some empty promises and wishful thinking. If they wanted to really support fighting games they would have done so when SF4 came out and it was a hit. its not like it was a secret game that only SRK knew was fun and 1000 hermits showed to a tournament for and never spoke of it again.
unless there is something else that happened this is how we are perceiving this. one of the top 3 SSF4 tournaments of the year promising top japanese players and a ridiculous pot on top of the pool as well as promising those same things for several other games is being pushed back only a month before it was suppose to happen to 2-3 months later because of a halo tournament sponsored by MLG that will also have tekken and SSBB. Not even SSF4 or TvC or SSBM. not even in the South east. You created a major SSF4 tournament for the community you yourself said you loved and you’re changing it for the worse because of a tekken/SSBB tournament.
there is far too many reasons for you to have this tournament when you intended from our point of view and very few to not have it. it just doesnt add up and im sure you dont care what i think but im absolutely certain im not the only one with this opinion on the matter and im willing to wager a majority of people feel the same way. i mean cmon… seriously?
Uh, so this is extremely shady and an extremely poor choice if I’ve ever heard one. My money is that this is a big joke, because honestly? The size and massive proportions of this event to be cancelled for something that is happening miles away.
Please, if this is honestly the case, update your other webpages accordingly, you have links all over the place that are going to need updating.
Shady is a strong word, Bad decision would be better suited. Use my Avatar if you feel like someone just stole your stapler. Courtesy of my friends in Tampa.
Man, I am not really liking this decision at all, I had just sent in my request days for off for the next few months and was fairly hyped about this event.
I understand the decision, but as the last few posts have put it quite nicely in why this is a bad idea. IMO I would just keep the date due to having it reserved for a long time and just roll with the punches and just plan accordingly for next year.
So you’re changing the date of your tournament because MLG gave you money. When the tournament’s a month away. And people bought plane tickets already.
I understand. This was definitely “for the players”!
I’m on the same boat as Marn, except I’m flying in my little brother from South America and a friend. dropped about 1,000$ dollars on tickets, already requested the week off, and now you guys want to cancel with only a month’s notice? Oh yeah, can’t wait to tell my gf who also already paid for her friends ticket.
I can guarantee that I nor any of my friends will ever attend one of your events if you guys move this. I still can’t believe this.
Ok I’m going to warn you my comments are going to be very abrasive (which is sugar-coating it to say the least)
I’m not going to go into detail on why people should not go to your events, but I will tell you about the reason on why I will not go to one of your events.
I’m self-employed. I run my own DJ and entertainment business and we’re contracted to do things like like corporate parties, wedding receptions, etc. We’re sometimes contracted to do these said events a year before the date of the event. If I were to tell any of my clients that a month before the scheduled event I have to cancel for WHATEVER the reason may be not only will that client not book me for an event ever again, but they’ll probably tell at least 4-5 people not to book me for any of their events either.
Why did I mention the statement above? You stated that this was a tough but good decision made. From a business standpoint, I fail to see how this could be a good decision IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM! If you guys want to run this like a business you have to treat it like one. The scene that we have here are your clients, not MLG, not the hotel, WE are. If MLG had any integrity, they would know that this would be a BIG inconvenience to anyone involved. However, as MLG proved to us once again, they don’t seem to care about the fighting game scene. All MLG did was muscle you guys out by giving you some money and a sales pitch, and you guys bit it hook, line, and sinker. Also, I have a very hard time believing that you will stand your ground the next time MLG tries this stunt again. If you let them do this now, what reason do you have to make us think that this won’t happen again?
Now instead of FL having their first major since the South FL challenges of yesteryear, now we have flights and hotel reservation canceled with just a MONTH before the event is supposed to happen, disgruntled players, and a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. Oh ya, and the MAHVEL players lost yet ANOTHER major because of this.
