I assume because the majority of the people on SRK are American. House seems to be more of a British/Euro thing these days.
I dont like criticizing other peoples mixes when they havent heard my stuff and so far Yahyaa seems to be the only person posting his own stuff. I’ll get some of my mixes out there asap.
I dunno. I think it’s because even though house was born in the US, it’s not nearly as embraced as, say techno or trance. Techno and trance are the most familiar forms of electronic music. A lot of Americans like noise and ‘unce unce unce’ which is perfectly fine. I love Detroit techno with a passion (you can’t find a better techno DJ than Jeff Mills) but to me, I feel most at home listening to house music (see what I did there). It’s probably due to me being raised around soul music. Many a night my mother would play stuff like Anita Baker, Chaka Kahn, Sade, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones and other classic R&B music. So when I hear house music…deep house especially, it takes me back. It makes me feel happy as hell.
Sexperienced: Where are you from? And what’s the electronic music scene like there?
Some people try to sound intelligent by complaining about shit thats not even worth complaining about. House tracks can be categorised and there’s nothing wrong with labeling them according to their sound, even if it is sometimes vague. I dont like listening to house music I cant dance to. If its not funky, soulful or Bass heavy and uptempo I tend to lose interest.
Latin house does not appeal to me either but French/uk/funky/disco/dubstep house and old school garage does.
I’m also not a huge fan of Latin house. I don’t really like the tribal sound to it. Which isn’t to say that I don’t like it but it wouldn’t be my first choice.
I think house isnt popular in the US for several reasons:
Outside of the big cities, mainly NYC and Chicago where house originated, that sound is now considered “old school” and bigger beats with more colorful melodies and techniques are used that make it seem pale and outdated in comparison to whats popular today.
Theres nobody here who has the power to or willpower to bring it to the mainstream. Right now the big thing is cutting up samples of current house tracks or remixing them with hip hop beats. And that shit sucks bad.
People still dont know what house is. Some think its baltimore club, some cant tell it apart from techno and trance. Just about everybody thinks its “gay people music” outside of the guido community on the eastcoast.
I dont mind the tribal sound like Voodoo Ray and some of the newer funky tracks in the UK but latin house remind me of raggaeton, its like a downgrade of the original music form.
london… The electro scene is still huge out here. House, Jungle (drum n bass ) and Trance are the main genres. With the number of clubs, events, festivals and with the diversity of london you’ll always find your niche however specific it is.
I live in Arizona and people here swear by dubstep (there is also a huge electro scene here too). You will also find jungle here too. Trance and techno are almost nonexistent. Myself and like maybe 5 other people are the only ones that I’ve found that like house out here.
Housey songs are getting popular in the USA. If you just listen to the radio, BEP, Ke$ha, etc are on that sound. I give this trend about a year. In the USA, Daft Punk, Moby, Oakey, Fat Boy Slim, and the like were big for just one second and then it suddenly died and it wasn’t cool to like electronic music.
Trance is very popular in festivals and massives and house is popular in lounges and clubs in the USA imo, that’s what I hear from my fellow Americans in their given regions across message boards i’ve been on. But in the San Francisco Bay Area where I live, you will find a party for whatever you want though.
I really do think that the #1 reason why USA hates dance music is because USA really likes rock music, and today’s dance music was rooted in disco which is rock music’s #1 enemy to us Americans. I think the American hipster scene which is all indie and rock embraced dance music purely because those dbags <3 irony.
I’m currently diggin Louis La Roche. I liked his latest EP, but it wasn’t good as his Peach EP… We’ve had like 30 years to dig through old disco records. I’m surprised he’s making things fresh, he must be an epic digger of vinyl. And the guy isn’t even old enough to go to clubs!

I find it funny that artists like akorn and Kelly Rowland can dabble in the Euro house scene and create genuine club bangers that outsell their US stuff. I doubt house will ever be as big as it used to be in the US because most americans still dont know what house is especially the people who define “real” house music as the type of music you cant dance to.
you don’t know where it’s at, and you listen to shit garbage throwaway pop no one will listen to in 10 years. you don’t know what house music is, you know the garbage people try to write off as house.
and if you think you “can’t dance” to real music, you obviously haven’t been to a real club. or heard a real dj for that matter.
