I honestly dont really know what makes deep house “deep house”.
i dunno either and i always thought it was kinda boring. then again i like really upbeat, energetic music. deep house makes me kinda wanna light up a cigarette and sit back with a cup of coffee…
you understand once you listen to it…it’s a certain feeling the music evokes. i find that a lot of it has to do with keys or a pad that creates a “soulful” harmony combined with varying rhythms.
zulu check out these mixes i made.

that one is a more classic take on it.
and this one more current.

the blueprint for deep house is larry heard - can you feel it
if you undertsand that track you understand what house is about and what it’s trying to convey. if you don’t well, you probably aren’t listening to real house music.

the “deep” feel comes predominantly from the pad that comes in at 00:25. + the bass synth.
it’s a combination of things, yet each are important.

Deep House
most of the tunes i’ve posted are supposedly deep house tracks, even this one … I think really downtempo house is considered Deep.
this is probably my favourite deep house track right now: The Avalanches - A Different Feeling (ernest st. laurent remix)
btw…much of the stuff advertised as “deep” isn’t actually deep. it’s just another buzz word designed to market music…it didn’t originate that way, but that’s what it is now. deep house also is not based upon tempo, there are “deep” tracks at 128 bpm or 100, it’s not a tempo thing.
“deep” is what house is supposed to be, inherently. like soul music is supposed to be soulful.
the term got abused to the point now where people throw it around with no actual meaning behind it. lot’s of stuff that gets called “deep house” is nowhere near what the actual sound is.
deep house is a lot of different things and a lot of different styles. there is “jazzy” deep house, there is “techy” deep house, there is “afro” deep house…many of these artists don’t just make one style of music either.

Minimal house FTW. Swayzak has been my favorite shit ever since Himawari dropped back in 2000…crazy to think it’s been 9 years, and that I was 12 years old at the time…

Would this be considered “deep”?
if you were to label it, i’d probably label it tech house before i used the word “deep”. it’s on that side of things though.

classic
Tech House is a label I often see interchanged with Minimal House, so that makes sense. Stuff like Ricardo Villalobos and Richard Davis come to mind.
