Full-time Purple Spider Lesbian: Juri Match-up/Strategy Thread

The bison and blanka matchups r in the information compilation thread along with the t hawk, cammy, Rufus, and chun r in genki’s master class thread FYI, I hope it doesn’t sound like a dick thing to post but a good amount of the info being asked is there already unless ur having specific issues with certain things I mean knowing the matchups is important an all but u also have to factor in ur opponents skill lvl with regard to if he knows the matchup or if he just does random moves, we get a lot of the latter in the US which makes writing a matchup thread somewhat biased, everyone has done a good job tho of staying true to the “equal lvl” portion while writing them

I really liked Genkis format and lately I’ve been writing some matchup notes for myself on evernote so if I ever happen to be at an offline tournament again I have some notes available because last time i fucked up due to my lack in character specific knowledge.
I tried to convert Jaks writeup into this chart and I also tried to figure out for myself on how to punish the backflips properly. Are there any flaws, bullshit or anything I’ve forgotten ? I will post my notes from time to time once I have finished them. If theres anything to add feel free to contribute :slight_smile:

Vega Matchup

Offensive Tips:
. OS meaty cr.MP’s with OS Dash > s.LK hitconfirm (standing)
. He is free on wakeup even with meter so be sure to meaty him alot with cr.MP (OS Dash)
. dashunder and crossover sekku works after HK senpusha in the corner

Defensive Tips:
. stores can be punished, be sure to store at a safe distance
. he can hop over LK fireballs. Bait the Hop and punish with cr.MP
. the hop is -4 when done from point blank, cl.MP xx HK Senpusha to punish it
. If they space the Hop properly it’s usually a tick throw attempt. j.MP xx Divekick to punish it but use it sparingly.
. Both his Ultras and Roll are fireball invincible
. you can j.MP out of his vortex if hes going to barcelona throw you in the corner (loses to Claw though)
. juris cr.MK goes below his cr.MP (which most Vegas will do after Roll attacks)
. mash EX wheel during rolls since the theres a gap between the last 2 hits.
. a close s.HK can be punished with cr.MK xx HK pinwheel or LK pinwheel since its -7 on block
. he is able to crossup juri with his j.HP after a barcelona throw > dash > wait a splitsecond > j.HP You can either tripguard him with cr.MK or completely evade it by crouching.

Effective Option Selects + Midscreen Setups:
HK Senpusha > 2x Dash > cr.MP OS Dash > s.LK, s.LP cr.MP xx HK Senpusha
Backthrow > 2x Dash > cr.MP OS Dash > s.LK, s.LP cr.MP xx HK Senpusha
Backthrow > Safejump > OS Dash > s.LK s.LK cr.MP xx HK Senpusha
Beats reversals and KKK Backflips. If he really does his PPP Backflip you have to react with another dash into cr.HP xx Pinwheel.
There is no easy way to time it so be sure to practise this. Basically if you see that the s.LK doesn’t connect you can just dash again and throw. It’s easier to do but does less damage.
Backthrow > Safejump > OS FSE > Dash and punish accordingly
This kills the Vega player

Ultra:
. Feng Shui Engine
. s.HK 2nd Hit FADC dashthrough works on crouching Vega (basically after overhead)
. abuse corner fuzzys on him
. cr.HK xx LK senpusha crossover sekku doesn’t work

Corner Setups
Forwardthrow > Dash > Store > NJ.HK / fuzzyguard / s.mk / TKCS divekick etc.

Fuzzy Guards:
(n)j.HK j.MP
Focus Crumple / j.MP > cr.MP fadc reset > j.MP
Corner Focus LVL2 > backdash > s.HK reset > j.MP

Fireball BnB only works on crouching Vega

Some random stuff for Vega. Focusing thru’ light rolling claw Juri is at least +3 frames. For medium/hard/ex rolling claw, if you first block low, then high, the next hit will not be a true block string. There is a one frame gap so you can kara cancel an ex counter. For the hard/ex rolling claw you can counter straight up and land an air attack combo. Vegas far hard kick is punishable by lk pinwheel if not spaced correctly.

EX Barcelona is not fireball invincible. That’s EX Sky High Claw, the one where he shoots straight off the wall, and it’s completely vulnerable until after he touches the wall.

Also, his backflips can’t be used as reversals, so a properly timed meaty attack should keep them from coming out at all.

Other than that, this looks great, thank you for taking the time to put it together, and thank you to the sources who found the information. I’ve been in need of Vega specifics for a while now.

Vegas far.HK is really -7 on block (didn’t know that lol) I think cr.MK xx HK wheel is even a better punish if its done close. I am still pretty sure that his backflips can be used as a reversal and even if not it’s really hard to time the meaty. I couldn’t get it to work yesterday.

Makoto Matchup

Offensive Tips:
. Delay s.MK’s on wakeup to stuff EX Overhead and EX karakusa
. All hayates can be punished with cr.MK xx Pinwheel (LP 3 frames MP 2 frames HP 1 frame)
. You can throw Makoto out of the s.MP > s.MP strings (standtech 1 frame link)
. Meaty cl.MK beats EX Commandthrow and overhead
. HK Senpusha dashunder + sekku crossover works in the corner

Defensive Tips:
. After Fukiage j.HP Air reset your best bet is to focus backdash.
. After any Hayate cr.MK beats all s.MP followups due to the low profile. The timing gets stricter for each Hayate version. Be aware of cr.LK followups though since they beat the cr.MK.
. After backthrow never backdash since Makoto can OS U1 or u2 (if she has it). Use Kasatushi instead.
. Backthrow > dash > nj.HK used to be her safejump and it still is but she has do delay it for at least 2 frames. If you dont notice a delay, throw her upon landing.
. Make use of the armorcancels in this matchup
. HK Fireballs will beat U2 so use these ones alot to bait the Ultra if she has it stocked.
. You can evade the crossup / non crossup tsurugis on reaction with cr.MK in the corner

Makoto Corner Mixup
Her corner Mixup is incredibly good, damaging and annoying if applied correctly (I hate you Masakimi)
After an EX Overhead knockdown in the corner she has various options. If she dashes twice, expect her 50/50 Tsurugi (fake crossup and crossup) j.MK (crossup) and try to focus dash out of it
(anything is better than a wrong guess into a damaging combo into the same mixup again). You can also evade the tsurugis on reaction with cr.MK and throw her immediately afterwards.
If she immediately jumps after an EX overhead knockdown expect her to land in front due to the teleport which her forward MP and forward HK causes.
After a Focus crumple > Fukiage > j.HP reset you really have to guess. There is no easy way out. Her cr.HK teleport doesn’t work though because Juri’s EX wheel has quite a few active frames.
If you ever see her doing the reversal bait ( fukiage > j.HP > cr.HK just before juri lands) react with EX Pinwheel.

Effective Option Selects:
Sweep > Dash 2x > cr.LK s.LK OS EX Wheel
Safejump > OS Sweep or EX Wheel

Ultra:
. Feng Shui
. sweep xx LK Wheel > Sekku crossover doesn’t work

I believe far hk is actually more than -7, similar to how Juri’s light pinwheel is terribad on block. You can even punish the hard kick with medium pinwheel, but since its range is kinda wonky i dont think its very reliable.
I only mention the lk pw cuz it has more range than cr mk and possibly more likely to land vs competent Vegas’.

Another random fact for Vega(and other chars) you can instant overhead w/ j.hp after Ultra2

FSE activation to lk pinwheel on a blocked mp/hp honda headbutt…could it be?

the match ups isn’t fair, since Juri is a hard character to use, she should have good advantage against basic characters…

For any beginners picking up Juri,
it pays to learn from the great players.
Their lessons will come in handy at some point during your matches.
Just like it did for me here, as a prime example.

I don’t know if this has been posted before, but you can dash through Oni’s demon slash and she goes right through it unscathed. I think its because she ducks under Oni’s punch hitbox with the dash?
Correct me if that isn’t the reason why she’s able to avoid getting hit.
You can also dash under Sakura’s tatsu while in FSE. Any tatsu from any character actually.

Yeah, Juri’s dash lowers her hitbox significantly. It’s the same reason that Juri is able to dash under some fireballs where almost every other character can’t. You can also dash under sakura’s tatsu (HK most commonly) in non FSE too and you can punish after she lands (you can’t react with it though, it’s kind of a chance thing).

Note that there is no real use for this outside of random coincidence. You can’t really react to light slash with forward dash, and the other slashes are better off being punished in easier ways, like blocking or neutral jump on reaction.

Also Rose’s fireball. I had a game like 2 weeks ago where I had a pixel left and Rose had like 60 percent left. I FSE’d, dashed under her fireball, comboed her and got the reset for the win. It was glorious.

You can also dash under T. Hawk’s Condor Spire.

If you mistime the focus dash you end up dashing right into Cammy (forward and backwards) Crouching crossup is good too but if he mistimes it and it lands in front and you get hit lel
