Friends Hating Because I Play Chun

It’s kind of true though. High level Chun play consists of playing like a bitch. You zone and poke and crack away at your opponent till they die.

Gootecks pointed it out to me once, we were playing in casuals and he looked at me and was like “Why does every Chun player play her like a bitch?”

I laughed and proceeded to zone and poke.

Still lost though. Damn Gootecks.

I feel like his opinion is more biased because of 3S Chun. Every time I talk to a 3S player or former 3S player I get that vibe or response from them every time Chun gets brought up for any game. I felt this way too (I played Ryu in 3S) and I wasn’t gonna play her in SF4 because of her 3S version. But this version is way different and I’m glad I gave her another chance. Pokes are pokes man, and if that’s what it takes to bring about that opinion then Balrog, Dhalsim, Bison, Guile and to an extent Fei Long players play like bitches too. Word life.

The only time I truly feel like a bitch as Chun is vs Honda. It’s like “Oh no Mr. Honda, you’re not allowed to do that either. Please try something else. Tee hee.”

Edit: Oh yeah, vs. Zangief and T. Hawk too… but how many characters in the game are not supposed to be a bitch vs. them?

Ok, looking back and after today’s casuals, I think I’m starting to get that too. Some players here starting to lament and dread my backdash, s.mp’s, kikos and are really on the verge of calling my pokes and backdashes cheap (before looking for counters to them of course).

Which of course, as a Chun-Li player, means I’m doing things somewhat right.

Wow what a hater. Chuns pretty much my wife I’ve been maining her in every game shes been in (including crossovers). Tell em to deal with it.

P.S: If your friends play Ryu or Ken, tell em them to shut up. Chuns way harder to play then those scrubs

Chun li is a pretty solid character, to win with her you kinda need to know what you’re doing. I think you’re friends sound like scrubs if they think that Chun li is easy to play.

I agree, it’s more fun to play an agressive Chun but it’s pretty reckless. I think that the ideal Chun li player is a player who has a switch between zoning and pressure constantly in situations that matter (i.e. Nuki and Haneyama).

My AE Chun is strictly pressure and rushdown with some zone and poke, occasionally.

i dont think ultra 1 is good. it only has a few very specific practical applications, and u2 does next to nothing in damage.

tell them to quit crying, and that they simply refuse to learn the matchup

I think it’s also likely to be the fact that at low levels, Chun is actually very easy to win with. When you get to higher level play, her lack of rush down options, easily safe jumped reversal, floaty jump, reliance on meter etc become much more of a problem but at lower levels things are different. Ex bird is pretty good before people learn to safe jump, her ground normals are incredibly long rage and incredibly fast which makes her feel impossible to get in on if you’re not a Jedi with focus attacks. lp Kikoken from full screen seems to give her a completely free entrance before people learn to exploit its slow recovery time. Her walk speed can put her at fullscreen or right next to you in an instant. Her air to air normals mean that if two low level players meet in the air and both just hit a button, chun will probably win out. Nj.Rh and st.fierce are very effective anti airs at low level that are easier to react with than the dp motion (especially considering timing.). Her short and jab are also both chainable and the former leads to one of if not the easiest hit confirm ultra in the game. Her throw range is also pretty disgusting. It’s very easy to ‘accidentally’ do the right thing with chun especially at range. You also don’t need any real execution to perform her core tactics with reasonable effectiveness.

Her reliance on fundamentals at high level make her a difficult character to be successful with in the long term but at low level, her fundamental tools are so strong that when you pit chun against another character and both players are just kind of pressing buttons, crouch teching everything, and looking for ways to get ultra all day, chun is likely to come out on top. Reliance on fundamentals isn’t so bad when you have one of the best sets of fundamental tools in the game.

So while the big complainers are definitely wrong about her being ‘OP’ I still feel she’s one of the most solid characters in the game and a low level dominator. Chun shares a seat with Blanka (And there’s no end to the sea of hate against him, and he’s a worse character!) at the top tier of low level play. Some characters can be very easy to pick up and exploit the weaknesses of other players with but as players level up, the weaknesses of these characters become more apparent.

How does trying to rushdown with her go against good players that are using characters that are built for that? I’m just wondering cos I play a kinda aggressive Chun but the better the opposition the less successful I find you can be using that tactic… Chun is a brick wall when used correctly so I find I have to zone a lot of time, and use footsies tools just to stand a chance.

Zoning with her normals can shut a lot of players down far better than trying to rush em down cos in a lot cases Chun wants to be at a set range and the other guy wants to be close to her…

I’m glad this thread has great Chun CONVERSATION. Turns me on more than the character her self!

I am, and have always been, very very interested in her play-style. Chun/Blanka are my “go to” characters and I get a TON of hate from my normal circle of SF buddies. They don’t hate either character, or me, they just hate that they know they just got out-fundemental’d. I’ve played a lot of great matches, but I notice players catch the most trolled-up comments when they just poked the fuck out of their opponent. No one bitches about getting KO’d by an ultra or a well-placed super or anything but a well placed s.RH… you don’t stop hearing it until until Person XY runs out of breath.

I guess it’s just a labor of love, that is, putting up with your friends acting like divas.
I say eat a mother fuckin Snickers, ass-holes.

Chun/Blanka eh? Hows it going main-buddy! highfive

Wewt! :woot:
It goes well besides when I Blanka-slide into focus attacks. Shit happens when you are playing against smarty-pants. Working on NOT letting it happen. That’s pretty much it. Haha

This whole forum has great Chun conversation.

Honestly this forum is part of the reason I’ve stuck with Chun for so long lol. I go to other character forums and they’re not as active, not as helpful, or both.

After watching Uryo kick serious ass at Godsgarden though I’m thinking about subbing Sakura like all these other Chun players, lol.

Dude…THIS. I’ve been messing with Dudley recently and all i get for simple questions in their forums is straight trolling and sarcasm. I’ve learned a ton about Chun here already simply because everyone is willing to help. These here are the best character specific forums I’ve seen in SRK’s street fighter section yet.

^I sub Dudley too.

Heh at playing Chun like a bitch, but lately I’ve adopted a new gameplan for her - rush that shit down. Because her defense can really start crumbling once someone gets in, I basically try not to even give them the chance. Like, you can lame Abel out for 70 seconds, and then he gets one good read and he’s in your face and then you’re dead. Fuuuuuuuuuuck that. Abel has shit defense so I basically just take the fight to him. Same for Makoto.

My friends hate Chun too, mostly because they don’t know how to deal with her normals. But it’s whatever, I play the game at least 5x more than they do so it’s to be expected. I’ve never gotten any hatemail online for playing her, but recently I’ve been getting mail asking for advice on how to deal with her.

I still remember when tier lists came out for SSF4 and Chun and Honda were on top… I’d get hatemail for beating people with Chun and they’d message me calling me a tier whore and to learn to play a character that wasn’t “broken.”

“Dude, if you think she’s broken, YOU try playing her. She’s not vanilla Sagat.”

Personally i think Chun-Li is a pretty balanced character overall. She has a lot of strengths, and definitely has some weaknesses but she consistently has been good in each version of SF4 and doesnt change much between versions. People who complain about her probably just dont know how to play the matchup. Gotta love Chun tho, main for life

That’s mostly true but she has holes in her game that mean certain characters simply destroy her regardless of knowing the MU, and I think some of the people on here that complain about her or some of her weakness actually do so cos they understand her and her MU’s and are better with her than a LOT of other Chuns both on here and in genreral. So yeah she’s good but even knowing a MU can’t help you beat certain characters (if they know the match up as well)
