So I moved here about 5 months ago now, from a pretty active scene up in MA(Metro/Boston) and my younger brother insisted I find my way into the fight scene around here. So I’m walking around the mall looking for applications and I see this little spot called ‘GAMEPAD’ …no different than any other LAN center I’ve been to before. (smells bad, a single MvC2 cabinet and people who clearly live by the meaning ‘Salt Life’) Anyways, I seen a little advertisement board sporting " SFxT Tourneys every Fri" so I entered the 'SFxT Tourney – Day 4 that following Friday…needless to say I placed third in singles and second in 2v2 with a past Halo friend of my brothers named Bolt (Amazing player, funny as hell and easy to get along with, also easily SALTED). So a terrific start needless to say! I fade away for a short bit due to the fact of having work and busy schedule …2 months after … the scene is stale. All due to one competitor by the name of MagnetoMan…Some of the complaints I heard around were, 'We know he’s going to win and take our money so we don’t want to enter" the second complaint was ‘He never gives advice or tips to the new up and coming scene goers and just trolls their play styles’ I don’t want to put this on the shoulders of just one player but clearly not everyone who enters EVO is expecting to place top 10 let alone the top 25, SO GROW A SET! My whole idea was to post this thread and see if we can revive this scene a bit. Lets get casuals started! Tourneys organized and beat the whole mind frame of ‘I’m just gonna loose’. We have two great LAN centers in the F-Burg and Spotsy areas, GamePad and Sage Mantis. I would like to see a steady scene approaching in the future. I’ve played with the greats and legends like Lucky D, Asian Tom, Caddles, Nestor, J. Wong, Spooky, Sanford Kelly, Arturo, Bahn (Just to name a few) and even grew up playing one of the most renown team members of Sp00ky, NerdJosh. So JOIN THIS THREAD and lets revive the palpitating scene. Talk trash but keep it humble, provide tips/tactics and meet some like minded players. Hopefully we can create a stream of some sort or even a team of our own if all pans out properly. Well I’m looking forward to hearing from the competitors in this area and game on!

From my short time of going to the gamepad ranbats and looking at the player base, mags is just leagues ahead of most of the players in the area. That’s because 1) he’s been playing for a while 2) He’s played with a lot of the older players 3) some of the players need to step their game up. I don’t know why anyone would just give up and say “oh he’s going to win anyways, no point in going”. Changing times i guess.
I’ve seen his play, I do agree that he is leagues ahead as well but it doesn’t make sense as to why everyone would just throw in a white flag. Honestly I would like to play Mags, I don’t care if we go back as far as A3,3S, CvS2 or even to the more current games. I’ve been around the fighting game competition as early as 15. Living in the same area as NerdJosh in CT, we literally chilled all the time together so we were reading each other like books in our play styles. Either way, I hope that some of the players catch onto this thread and we can start to resurrect this and tame the issue of one talented player throughout the VA area.
Is anyone up for some casuals sometime this next coming weekend for SF4AE, MvC3 or SFxT??
There has to be somebody why wants to get some casuals in or arrange some sort of tourney? What’s going on FBurg??
That’s about an hour down 95 for me…I may be up for some casuals some time, but i’m gone next coming weekend.
I live about an hour or so away as well and have come up with some guys from around Charlottesville before. The area seem to be pretty beaten down if you ask me besides a few players I’ve played with and talk to including Matty P, an Ibuki player and Magman. If you guys could start showing some more numbers I may be inclined to try and come up there with some of the guys from around here. Although it seems like fighting games around here have lost some interest as of late.
For reference we mostly play AE and kof around Charlottesville with some guys who like to play MvC. We also have a thread on here with the spot we play at if you want to come down here sometime and game with us.
I’m just up in Woodbridge, def if anything in north stafford happens I’d love to come. Also, I’m trying to get a 2x a month session together in woodbridge, if I can find a good place I’m happy to pass the word on to the good folks further down south!
Good luck f-burg!
@SMWong- Where you heading to, do you live in the VA area?? Or are you moving from it?
@The Mole - That’s what I am hear for, is to increase the numbers and bring a little of that northern competitive play I had up Mass to the south. I’m not going to lie but from what I see in the F-burg area…(and I could be wrong) The players consist of Online Warriors and just kids who get Salted way too easily. Which is why their scene gets killed way too quickly and then I hear that ‘MAGMAN’ is to blame which to me is a BS excuse. I’m totally game for coming down and showing numbers to get people to come up here for weekly ranking tourneys as well. Personally though I don’t think fighting games have died because I always seem to bring a crowd if I am playing on cabinet or console, even though they do not choose to sit down and compete there is an interest and appeal. Feel free to hit me up and discuss tourneys or casuals in the area, I’m still brand new here so I’m all about meeting new players.
@HellBox9 Like I said, we do have two LAN areas here and one of them always holds tourneys on a Friday(GamePad). The other one(SageMantis) I am working on and discussing venue fees so we can host tourneys and in my eyes he has a larger venue and can do more lock-ins then the other which to some people is a bit more appealing. Same as I told Mole, keep in touch and I will also inform people about upcoming tourneys as well.
I’m up around Fairfax area, so i’m in VA. Like I said, let me know through SRK about anything happening and i’ll free up some time. I’m always up for some casuals, so don’t worry about me. If i’m gonna play I sometimes head to Xanadu but not gonna lie the area sketches me a bit.
If you’re hosting i’m all for coming through! Woodbridge isn’t that far from me!
abstrktvandal, are you sure about gamepad? I just called em yesterday to ask if they were still doing fighting game nights and the girl on the phone told me it wasn’t happening any more.
Of course she said that!! Her BF was the one who held the tourneys and he just had him and his friends playing the tourneys, so when MAGMAN came and beat him and his fan boys they were the ones who told me we’re not doing tourneys anymore. Simply because of the fact they didn’t want to loose their money. I’m going to talk to SageMantis today because I am close friends of the shop owner and I AM getting these tourneys started.
Like I said I am still brand new to the area so I am just establishing the tourney scene for myself and the gamer’s in the area. I opened this thread to collect numbers and see who is actually interested in getting casuals and tourneys started, so that there will be an actual turn out for the events when we get them up. I am going to try for the 7/27 and to enter would be $20.00 and ten dollars would go into the venue cost. I think that is pretty reasonable. As for GAMEPAD they are going to be a different entity to tackle because it is just filled with fanboys, you can spot them on live sporting the tags Soup Or _____ << Insert lame name (GHEY)
I just request you don’t listen to them because they are not seasoned competitive players or tourney goers, this is an element I am trying to bring and resurrect to this area. Josh and I did it for CT and I helped keep it alive with LuckyD and Asian Tom in MA, now it’s time to bring VA’s pulse back. Obviously Mole has it going on in his part of the region, so let’s do this in F-Burg. But thanks for the information Hellbox. I’ll be shooting messages to players in the area as soon as I talk to Sage. DEUCES!!
I just got done speaking with the owner from SageMantis, he is okay with the tourneys being held inside of his shop. The entry fee will be twenty dollars, 10 for venue and 10 to play. I will okay for the 27th in a short bit. Just let me know who is going to be coming, thanks.
Can’t make it, gonna be up in Baltimore for the weekend. I’m down for said next time.
Totally!! I’m still planning to hold this so people can get an idea as to what sort of competition will actually be around in the nearing towns and cities.
Anyone else interested?? We can hold MvC3, AE and SFxT…or if people have enough competition for KOF, speak up. I’d be glad to hold all sorts of games.
ill be out of town the 27th, but just saying that $20 might be a little steep for getting things started, I’d drop $10 (5 for venue 5 for pot) for an evening’s worth of games, but its a recession, $20 plus driving down is a little much…
Alright I am totally okay with seeing about the change in venue. I was thinking it was a little much as well. He’s just a little unsure about a turnout…when he checks the first tourney things should look and feel more solid for the owner of the shop.
I’m down for a tournament in this area. Any time is good.
Awesome it was great speaking with you today Sloth. Hopefully all goes well and I hear from your manager soon. Just let Jayson know we are gonna be holding competition again also and maybe even get him back in here posting for recruiting numbers purposes…??
$20 is way too much.
