as for multiplayer probably Battlefield 2. Had a lot of fun playing that at internet cafes along with CS 1.6
Yeah, I don’t remember exactly the changes, since it was so many years ago. As I remember it, they made it more casual friendly, for example it got easier to get kills without good aim. They also made it more and more realistic, which resulted in very limited movement and lots of bad shit. The Devs pretty much never had competitive play in mind. Was really a bummer, since I really liked my clan, Team Unknown <3

On another note, this thread really sums up my thoughts lately. I’ve been wanting to get back into FPS again, but I don’t like any of the newer games. There’s like only CS 1.6 left. Oh, and of course the superb console FPS…

There was a time period when there were a ton of action movie inspired mods in development. Action Half-Life (AHL) which grew from Action Quake was one of the better ones, even if the damage was kind of wtf high. The Opera tried for an interesting scoring system that wasn’t just about frag count and had a bigger variety of movements, but it kind of went in the exact opposite direction of AHL with respect to damage and people generally felt too durable, a point that was made especially evident in the 1v1 dual beretta duel mode, where combined with health regen two guys could be shooting at each other (and hitting!) for literally minutes. Desert Crisis had some entertaining stuff, though I mostly remember it for using a clip from the Men Without Hats song Safety Dance.
I remember Axis Arena! Too bad nothing really ever came of Netsphere out here. Axis Arena somewhat reminded me of Descent, but I didn’t actually enjoy playing Axis Arena.
I don’t have an issue with FPS games not being about item control. Some FPS games are built with it in mind, and some aren’t, and as long as they are thoughtful in considering what their game really is about, it can be made to work either way.
Team Fortress Classic pre-conc nerf was either super awesome or super stupid.
Q3A is a better balanced pure DM game than Unreal Tournament, but I enjoyed UT much more.
Rocket launcher in Doom is probably the most ridiculous rocket launcher in any FPS ever. The Q3A BFG has more in common with the Doom rocket launcher than it does with the Doom BFG. On the other hand, Q2’s BFG was way cooler.

Wildcard: play Ratchet & Clank in FPS mode. I did this with R&C3 and it was ridiculously fun.
My personal favorite was MAG. I can’t speak to how good the rest of the games mentioned are I’ve played a lot but never got too serious into any other one, played COD4 BFBC2 and some other ones for fun (only pc games I ever played were RTSs so no CSC or other Steam games for me). But MAG was sick 126 vs 126 people on the same map. It died off pretty quickly(patches, fan base wasn’t ever big enough and fell off quickly once CoD people realized you couldn’t just run from place to place killin people) so my love for it is probably misplaced but I cracked out on that game for a summer and had next to no life outside of work n that game. I think it would have done well if it had been released for PC but ahh well

Specialists was dope! My friend and I used to play it a lot years ago when we would LAN. I still hang onto the install file just in case we ever play again although I haven’t touched the game in at least 6 years.
