P.S. BTW he basically did say it himself. He concocted the quote, posed it as a hypothetical and then endorsed it.

Clearly Matthews’ comment is a jab at Newt’s Irish ancestry. 
The Republican part of the polls is split because of the upcoming primaries. If you were to phrase it as “Romney or Obama,” you would have a lot of people vote for romney instead of another republican candidate just because (to them) he’s better than Obama.
