Force of Three- The Nova Teambuilding Thread

In Vanilla I 100% agree, but in UMvC I feel it’s helpful, but not necessary. An OTG adds around 100k or so on to the combo depending which you use, and there are a lot of ways to make that up. If you do an air combo followed by your hardest hitting assist in to a TK air max voltage to finish the combo, you have already made up most of the damage that you would get from Trish in an OTG combo (depending on your assist).

Plus if you are running her on a team with Nova and don’t have enough meter for the OTG max voltage you can TAC in to him for full combo damage since you will have at least a bar by then. If you just want to push to the corner, Nova is great at that too.

Taking that in to consideration, is an OTG really worth the slot?

I’m not quite in agreement on this either. That’s only true if you are putting Nova on point and want 2 assists that directly help with his offense.

As mentioned above, I don’t feel Trish really needs an OTG assist anymore, especially working with Nova. At this point the only thing she really “needs” in my opinion is decent range/zoning assists to help with her trap/range game. Nova’s gravimetric pulse works very well as a tool to assist with her style of zoning, and mix that with a ranged assist in the 3rd slot and it’s a perfect match for Trish.

For Nova, I feel like he only really “needs” something to cover his unsafe offense, so the ranged assist from the 3rd slot has that covered. Trish’s Peekaboo works great with Nova as well, after being pushblocked drop a gravimetric pulse and you can cycle that with Peekaboo and your ranged assist and be a pretty scary ranged game against most of the cast, and even if they are someone that can combat it you can take advantage of their restricted movement to open up on them easier.

So I usually put Trish on point and Nova second, with an Anchor (I’ve found success with Doom/Dante/Strider/Hawkeye so far but not 100% set on one yet) for a few reasons. Let’s say Trish/Nova/Doom with plasma beam. Both assists are very beneficial Trish’s offense and (unless you are 100% set on giving her an OTG) ideal for her game. She has 3 traps instead of 2 with Gravimetric pulse making it even more to deal with, Doom gives full blown projectile offense. She can TAC in to Nova if needed, At the very least she is always able to do enough chip damage to allow Nova to TOD once he comes in, making combo extensions unnecessary for him (and with 800k+ BnB’s they arent very neccessary anyway). With her on point she is able to set up Round Harvest easily, and if necessary do a safe tag. They DHC perfectly. Since Trish can safely tag Nova usually gets in with both assists up and can use the trap along with gravimetric and beam to actually give him a decent range game. Even if Trish is down, Plasma beam makes all of Novas attacks safe, so that’s the only assist he really needs. Both characters arent the biggest meter hogs and good at charging meter for the anchor.

I would say that’s fairly ideal for both characters, although I could understand how some might feel otherwise if they still feel Trish needs an OTG.

That’s just their synergy with Doom though, and they got a pretty good synergy with the other characters I listed too. Dante allows both Trish and Nova to have a completely rediculous vertical game and helps with dash mixups, Strider vajra is crazy with the duo as well since it keeps them out of the air getting barraged by Trish and is actually timed perfect to cover Novas unsafe offense just as good as a beam can, and if you set up a gravimetric pulse w/ nova normally ranged characters can out zone you if you dont have a projectile assist but Strider is able to counter projectile characters just as strong. Even assists like Drones and Hidden Missiles work great with them too (and works as an OTG if you really need one for Trish). There are a lot of options for the 3rd slot that have synergy with both chars because the assists that usually cover Nova are the same type of assists that Trish could put to use.

At this point I’m thinking Nova is an ideal 2nd character since he only really needs one assist, and from the streams I’ve seen so far of the top ranked players seem to be in agreement with that, since most I’ve seen put Nova 2nd.

Nova’s Offense is plenty safe, is 5B, and 2C are safe, and his 5C is safe against all but a few characters, and even then it’s safe because of spacing.

Your hitconfirming needs to be on point, but it’s nothing compared to what you need to play IM and people can handle that fine. What he needs the assist for is getting in and staying in. Most projectile assist accomplish the first just fine, but only a few take care of the second. This is why I like the Sent assist so much, it does the second better than any other in the game.

I don’t think Nova/Trish is bad per se, it’s just that if I wanted to make a team to benefit Trish, Nova wouldn’t be on it, and if I wanted to make one for Nova, Trish wouldn’t be on it.

I am in agreement with Spyridon. I think Trish DOES compliment Nova and vice-versa. I play Nova on point, but all of the things he mentioned are completely usable for my team. I choose to use the Centurion Rush M assist because it’s an overhead though.

I kind of play Nova/Trish/Sent like a ghetto MSS. Nova is a harder hitting Magneto with crazy resets, Trish is like Storm because she can switch from runaway to rushdown very effectively. Sent is…Sent. If I wanted to play a neo-Sent, I’d use Rocket Raccoon for his neo-Drones assist.

Like I said, Nova/Trish is far from bad, you vid is practically evidence. However, on your team, I would rather have Dante than Nova, which is pretty much my point.

I kind of feel that way sometimes, but I feel like with HSD nerfs Dante and Trish don’t have as much combo synergy. (I haven’t actually experimented though, so yeah.) Plus, I love having someone who will hit hard with a great reset game. Dante does hit hard when played correctly (which I question my ability to do) but his reset game is complicated and iffy.

Well, I don’t know how good your execution is, but Dante/Trish should be all insta-kills. But Dante’s mixup isn’t as good as Nova, it’s just harder to really do shit about that jerk.

I could usually do it in Vanilla. I hadn’t tested the HSD changes in this game. Guess it didn’t affect it much.

I haven’t tried it yet myself, as Dante was always one of my necessary evil type characters (The hammer nerf has made my dante look really fraudulent), but I’ve seen videos of it done. So I don’t know if it got harder, but it is still possible. My Dante BnB still does about 750k.

The damage and meter build are one perk, but the main benefit of having the OTG assist for her is giving her that extra bump to her corner carry. This lets her always, off any touch, take someone to the corner for a Round Harvest unblockable.

If I connect anywhere near the middle of the screen, I can just take it to the corner with an OTG extended BNB. If I connect too close to my own corner, I can turn the combo around and put them into the corner instead. Without the OTG, it’s not guaranteed.

Again I agree you don’t have to have this stuff to make Trish playable. But I think you need to have it to play her right, if that makes sense. A good comparison would be how FlyingVe feels about Nova without Spencer slant shot.

No I mean Nova / IF with or without spencer. One of IF’s assist crumples for you. Was just an Idea though, Iron Fist is col but I dont think I’d be able to use him effectively. I’ve always been horrible with Rekka characters.

Also I don’t you Ammy for her assist. Im an Ammy Main, so I always use her on point. And I dont see Cold Star as the same assist as GreyHound. Cold Star is more of a Lockdown assist and GreyHound is a more ( get in assist ). Coldstar is not very good for getting in unless you have some kind of teleport character in my opinion. Hawkeye compliments Nova and Ammy as a means of getting closer to the opponent.

Cold Star is a very good option for replacing the Sentinel type slot, and one I have been, and am considering. It’s a little weaker at long range, but Ammy is a much better character than Sentinel.

Fuck it so its gonna be Nova / Spencer / Ammy

Not in that particular order

RR’s double shot works nicely for that type of assist as well… but the characters overall performance is hard to judge right now. He’s hard to play and doesnt have much tech to make up for his shortcomings… don’t know if he’s really too viable at a high level yet. I like his assists, though.

Double shot is a pretty weak projectil/lockdown assist though. i’d rather use log trap.

Still not seeing how to DHC from Nova to Spencer without burning red health.

Ground Super Nova, and Human rocket.

Can you guys explain why nova and spencer go so well together? I ask this because im currently looking for a third character to finish my team of spencer and taskmaster.

Spencer is the only character i the game that can ground a opponent so that you can combo into Nova’s H Nova Strike for a crumple. Also Spencer is a good character so its not like he’s just an assist character.

To follow up on my previous post, I have been having waaaaay more success with Nova (Pulse)/Spencer(High Grapple)/Skrull (Orbital Grudge) than Spencer/Skrull/Nova. And I don’t even use the force-tech shenanigans. I am convinced that Nova/Spencer in that order indeed does make them BFFs. Orbital Grudge isn’t the best “get in” assist out there, but it’s good in strings to stay safe after c.M to whatever, decent with covering airdash, and with it’s armor I would say above-average in “get off me” ability. You can kinda hide behind it also, so it’s decent for the high/low mixup.

Another thing I’m convinced of is that, at least for this team, Gravimetric Pulse assist is ridiculous. I’m getting all kinds of mileage out of it from both characters when I have them on point, especially on character’s coming in.

I haven’t been having any problems DHCing into Spencer. Whatever combo -> ground Gravimetric Blaster -> Maneuvers. You have forever to DHC into it, as far as I can tell the window is until they hit the ground. You should only be doing it if it’s going to kill so I don’t see how the red health thing is a problem.

If it bothers you that much just do FlyingVe’s combo into crumple->Hard tag Spencer->Armor Piercer-> (wallbounce if you haven’t used it)->Maneuvers. I’m not sure it works on everybody though. After that there’s always:

-Exchanges (into third character, or back into Nova)
-Find a third character with a good dhc out of Maneuvers and there you have a 1mil+ combo for 3 meters. Skrull’s Inferno does it for me. =)
-Resets, of course.

Oh and Combofiend said on CrossCounter Live that he is going to drop Nemesis for Nova, so who knows what he is going to come up with. I think Nova/Spencer/Hawkeye is going to become really popular…

As of right now my team is Nova, Wesker, Spencer. I like the team as a whole but I need to just hit up the lab.
