You let Balrog do things on wakeup; he headbutts, he jumps, he jabs. Why? Why aren’t you doing safe meaty crouching jab every single time?
I dunno, man. I just didn’t think of it at the time.
Edit: Maybe it’s a mental thing. I relax too much and don’t think of other options. When I’m stressed out more and put into the corner, I start weighing my options and using them. That’s how I took out Pgruv’s Feilong.
Does a meaty cr jab beat out a headbutt?
coopa you rushed him that whole second round.you didnt even give him a chance to make any mistakes.i find that sometimes i just have to relax and hang back a bit.
Yeah dude, you were ahead by quite a bit in a few of those rounds. Make him come to you. I play a much less aggressive gief against rogs unless I get a knock down. Then it’s game on.
Had to test it out. No, it doesn’t. Meaty’s beat out jumps though. But to beat out a headbutt, you have to input a meaty that is considered a low. Since you can block cr.lp standing, you need to use cr.lk.
Lately, I’ve been trying to use cr.lk starter combos:
Right now, I have:
Cr. lk, cr.lk, cr.lk -> ex greenhand
or
Cr.lk cr.lp, cr.lp, st. lk -> ex greenhand.
I don’t really know which one is easier, but the latter is weaker by about 20 damage.
Crouching jab doesn’t beat headbutts, but if done as a meaty, it does recover in time for Gief to block before the headbutt hits him. The reason crouching short isn’t great is that if your opponent blocks it, he can reversal you before you can hit him with anything else. Blockstun is shorter than hitstun, so even though crouching short links into itself in combos, if done on a blocking opponent, it’s unsafe.
For a crouching short to be safe on block when doing a block string after it, you have to do it as a very early meaty. That timing is definitely worth learning since it beats headbutt, but if you use it, you should really combo it into crouching jabs, not shorts.
Oooooooh, you. Always with the good information. Thanks. Been practicing the cr.lk cr.lp version just a little more, and it seems easier, at least, by a bit.
Edit: Some bad news. After spding Balrog, light green hand only puts you close enough to do this combo:
cr. lk, cr.lp, st. lk, ex greenhand.
If you try two cr.lp, you push him too far to the point where st.lk doesn’t hit. Also, when Balrog wakes up, he pushes you a certain distance away. Wtf.

Starting at 4:09 This Zangief puts on an exhibition against a sagat in what’s supposed the 2009 Showdown finals. Can’t find the rest of the match though.
i dont really know what to say, that guy you were facing wasnt really good.when playing akuma you expect 100 air fireballs and that blanka was trash.what i can say is you did a good job at punishing his unsafe attacks.
Thanks for your input… added some more videos hope Im getting better
I’m curious. (I’m only through the first video thus far so this may change) Why didn’t you ever finish your ground combos against Rufus with EX glove?
I hadn’t played a serious game in the arcade for a few months at that point and I’d played in my first tournament in months just the weekend before, so I’d pretty much lost the timing on those green hand combos. I can do them on console almost every time, but I think there’s a little bit of a timing difference on the arcade, and that totally messed me up. Don’t think I actually got that combo more than 2-3 times the entire night.
Hey can someone post a vid of the new prejump lariat cancel glitch thing…or just explain it? Can Zangief do it as he gets up?
Dude, you’ve gotta fix the audio on those. They are way too loud and distorted.
As for your play, what’s with the million random green hands? Stop doing that, please. And you are missing a lot of punishable situations man. Like every time Cammy missed a cannon spike or spiral arrow, you should have been punishing. Same with blanka. You need to know how to block and punish his ultra. The cammy and blanka were not that great. They weren’t playing very smart at all.
edit: I just watched the akuma one. That was an awful akuma. He obviously had no idea how to fight a zangief. You can’t combo into SPD. I see you doing the jabs and then whiffing SPD. Stop doing that too. It will never connect. You need to wait for them to get out of hit/block stun.
Thanks for your suggestions bro… yup Im using way too much green hands…
those jabs -> spd … I need to time it properly as u said tey need to recover from stun.
Ps : Actually that was my friend he’s El n Gen player. we just played for fun.
Edit : I dont have any clue abt the audio… I tried to fix that but still its distorted.
Hey SBM, Here are some suggestions.
Like crapface said, yeh you LOVE the hand! You especially love to do the hand into SPD. Don’t rely on that too much. Good players know they can hit you right after they get hit by the hand, unless it’s EX.
Learn to poke and use normal moves. Zangief’s S.MP is amazing, great range and Fast. Use c.LP too. Learn to space around. figure what normal move is good for what situation and etc. s.RH can be used for anti-air against far jump in and etc…
Also after you SPD, try to mix it up by green hand to get closer to your opponent right away, so then you can play mind games.
I can say more, but that’s it for now.
sbm: i used to main blanka so i can give you some tips
dont jump around on blanka unless your sure he doesnt have charge, he has too many options to beat your airborne ass to death
get in the habit of counterhitting his ball attacks or learn how to punish them, vertical balls can be green handed, horizontal balls can be kara green handed, and rainbow balls can be FA and then crumple stunned depending on which way he lands… i said balls alot no beuno
start walking forward and then crouch blocking alot against blanka, his sliding punch( amazon river run ) comes out fast as hell but is very punishable on block. you can either punish with an spd, or you can punish with a cr. lk combo
dont go for crossups consitently on blanka, electricity is a cruel bitch but im pretty positive knee drop beats it to shit if you land in the middle of him.
general tips: try to implement tick throws into your game, they are very important to almost every character but even more so to zangeif. dont green hand so much, it is unsafe on block and its best used to either go under a jumping opponent to set up spd, or in ex form to score a knockdown. learn which moves can be punished by spd on block and whiff, and then learn the range of jab spd like the back of your ass.
good luck man if you want add me on XBL, i would be more then happy to get some mirror matches in or help you with your matchups ( i think i have mained every character in the game for at least a week now ). my gt is abbra cadav3r
Thanks for your suggestions guys… will improve my Zangief over period of time…
Jarekov I’ve added you on xbl…
