"For Mother Russia!" Zangief Video Thread

That srk in between the 1st/2nd hits of exgh combo is scary

Agreed. That was a terrible match by that Gief player.

critique my scrubby play please

Id say outside of obvious missed punishes

-too much jumping
-no o_s EX hand to deal with standing pokes
-to much tick attempts. He downloaded that part of your game and dashed away/jumped for free. Might have to butter him up more with more strings, Bison has no invincible reversal

Learn cr.lp option select EX green hand to deal with his standing hard kick.

In the casual matches against Dudley I thought you were jumping way too much. There were a lot of opportunities for him to Jet Uppercut you. Really good players will eat you alive if you keep trying those jumping Medium Kicks as well. Walk him into the corner and let him make his own mistakes.

There was also one opportunity you missed to light Spinning Piledriver him after blocking a Machinegun Blow in the corner. You are loosing a lot of life just because you are being way to agressive. When you have a decent life lead you don’t have to jeporadize yourself trying to open up your opponent. Let them come to you and make their own mistakes. At that point they have to beat you. It’s fun to use Zangief as a giant wrecking ball (I’m guilty of this to from time to time), but you have to learn to control your "Lizard Brain"1 as it can get you into trouble. On a side note I’d like to see more Atomic Suplex throws. They are quicker than Spinning Piledriver and great for cross ups. They also do 230 damage no matter what button you use. 240 if you use the ex version. That is 60-70 more damage than the light Spinning Piledriver! While I’m thinking about Atomic Suplex the Double Knee Drop also comes to mind. It’s a great “can opener” and you can use it to start combos if you throw it out just before you land; about half way down most characters. Nice job using the standing Medium Punch  Gotta love those chops.

It might seem like a lot of advice, but it’s all just something to keep in mind while you are playing. I did want to mention that I really liked the fact that you were actually pressing two punch buttons to activate theBanishing Fist; as opposed to the triple punch button. This is imenslley important as it helps you two-fold. 1) Linking EX Banishing Fists become a lot easier. 2) You will avoid a lot of unwanted Lariat spam. … and one last piece of advice; USE LARIAT!

If you would like some more help or a few games just look me up on** Xbox Live**: Forgetfulness

**(1) **From a psychological point of view, the Lizard Brain is the part of our brain right above our spinal column that controls instinctual reactions. Things like fight or flight are sent by the oldest part of our brain. This reaction is chemically controlled and by-passes our cognitive thought process.

Thank you for your responses. Here’s another video of me losing (my match starts at 11:40):

Please critique and let me know how I can improve my game. I only learned recently that I could use s.mp to punish sim’s whiffed s.hp; I don’t know why I never tried that before duh.

No more random exgh, please. Resist the urge, even out of despiration. Just don’t do it anymore. Also, more patience, you let him out of the corner twice WAY too easily. When sim has super, you need to stop jumping at him unless it’s an empty jump to bait it out. He can anti air you so easily with super. He’s just looking for it. Like someone said before, stop jumping so much. Make the jump more random and less predictable. Walk him into the corner and make him guess instead of having you guess. Whatever you do, don’t let him out of the corner. Like Sabin said, it’s 9-1 sim at full screen and 9-1 gief when sim is cornered.

I had some spare time this evening and thought I would give your match a more thorough observation. At one point I think you were using the kick Lariat, but it looked like you switched to the punch Lariat part way through. I would stick the the kick version as it’s good for catching those low punches. I know it’s a pain though because slow Yoga Fire isn’t always the easiest thing to spin through. A lot of Zangief players try and use EX Banishing Fist as a weapon on it’s own. Just don’t. Unless you are using it to get through a projectile to knockdown your opponent it’s just too slow and very punishable on block.

The second part of the game I noticed you had trouble with was zoning. It looks like you were just happy as a clam staying at the far side of the screen and trying to use Banishing Fist or Lariat to try and counter one of Dhalsim’s pokes. You really have to keep the pressure on in this match and that’s just not going to do it. Whenver you wanted to gain ground it look like you just tried to jump. Jumping is just too risky against a character with such a good keep away game. You’re just going to get kneed and kicked back to where you started. Instead of jumping to try and gain position just walk. Walk him right into the corner. I know you think that’s easier said than done (and you would be right), but you have to think of the tools that are available to you. To keep your position mid screen try Focus Absorbing one of the pokes and using kick Lariat right after to catch the next incoming poke. When you’ve got him in the corner you’re golden.

Having critiqued a few others people’s matches lately, I thought it was time to upload some of my own for the same purpose. Here are three video’s I’ve added to my You Tube channel for you guys. All these matches are fairly recent (less than a week old). Be as brutal as you want as long as it’s constructive. I’ll be adding more videos about once every week so do check back every once and a while.

If you jump backwards just before Akuma wakes up and akuma teleports past you, you have a guaranteed spd/ultra. you should try and learn knees option select green hand to chase his teleport rather than just doing a green hand on wakeup. If he stands and blocks that, you are going to eat a LOT of damage.

You had Akuma cornered and had the life lead then you jumped at him - a better Akuma will straight Demon you here, or shoryuken best case scenario. That jump loses you the round.

Learn option select cr.lp to green hand. You tried to reaction GH his roundhouse when you should be doing the cr.lp option select.

There is a certain distance from where Akuma will do a fireball trap - if you jump over the fireball akuma will demon which will land guaranteed. block and walk forward when you are closer to akuma.

And the end when he was throwing out sweeps, he was possibly buffering ultra for your jump. Something to bear in mind.

Interesting use of u2 against Akuma, but i actually think U1 is better against Ibuki. You know those cross up kunias you blocked? That’s u1 in her azz. I’m also surprised he didn’t hit you with a demon. You seemed kinda wreakless avoid his fireballs.

Overall, I’d do less lariat, less random EX GH, and didn’t know why you kept going for EX SPDs. Guess your brain was buffering for a u1 which you didn’t have.

Both of you guys are right. I was reckless against that Akuma. Usually he beasts on me. I will Post some video’s of that as well soon. As far as option selects go; I just have to sit down and learn them. It’s one thing to know what they are, but I have to hit the training room and incorporate them into my game. Those EX spd are caused by trying to green hand and not putting the stick back to neutral I think?

I’m trying to clean up my input as I tend to hit a button more than once and it can cause big trouble sometimes :\

I also don’t really have any Zangief buddies on XBL that can teach me new tricks. I was wondering if anyone here would have some time to mess around?

Look up zangiSRK, he likes to fill a lobby with gief players. I am in london so it’s too laggy but I do lots of ‘first to ten’ sessions with the top players in europe. YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

I get raped in most of them

Hey man it’s all about having fun and learning new tricks  Street Fighter is to me now what skateboarding was when I was 15 except there’s no concrete.

nice vids. to be honest, ur opponents weren’t that good and u got away with a lot of mistakes u shouldn’t have. u jumped way too much in the akuma match and he looked like he didn’t know the gief matchup at all. while i was watching i was expecting him to demon u so many times but he never did.

in the ken match what was up with all those random fa’s? trust me u won’t get away with that against a decent player. in the ryu match i noticed that u tend to punish whiffed or blocked dp’s with lariat. instead use atomic suplex or spd. against ibuki, blocked slide is a free spd but instead u did lariat or cr.jabs.

these four characters can be some of the most frustrating to play against as gief but ur opponents made it look way to easy. some quick advice would be:

1.stop the random gh’s, both ex and regular. it seemed like u tried to use regular gh as an attack and that’s not a good idea imo.
2.use spd’s and atomic suplex to punish and not lariat.
3.get some of giefs bnb combos down.
4.build meter with kick lariat. i don’t think u did that once.
5.be patient.
6.don’t jump when u can walk.

thx for the vids and keep at it.

Forgetful first tip find some good people to play. Those people were low to mid skill level at best. It’s better to lose to high level comp than to beat low level comp while learning bad habits. Everyone else gave you a good run down of some of the bad habits that won’t fly vs good comp. So here’s a way to find better compition.

Ranked mode online. Get your pp up to 4000 or so and just start a ranked match good comp will find you. Also after you get whooped in ranked mode send that guy a request for a first to 5 or 10.

Oh man thanks for all the goods tips fellas. I will definitly try to Lariat less and punish with spinning pile drivers instead. As far as 4000 player points goes though, it’s a little hard to get them that high because I always switch to Ryu for a break when I get frustrated with Zangief. My Ryu looses me quite a few points as he’s really only there to have a mental break with. I also didn’t know you could spinning pile drive Ibuki’s slide. I may have tried it once or twice, but perhaps I just have to do it sooner. A lot of the times I punish with a light punch I’m trying to practice my combos.

If you think it makes a big difference though I will just use Zangief to get those player points up there. Again thanks for the tips fellas
