"For Mother Russia!" Zangief Video Thread

J Wong is really good with his footsies man. Yeah, mp will always lose to cr.hp so you have to start throwing out more shorts buffered with EXGH. I find most fei games just comes down to footsies.

Ultradavid or anyone else good with O-S.

In the first round of this video Aloha keeps catching Haneyama’s backdashes with green hand, is this on reaction, or is he doing O-S?

It seems like he knew the Chun player liked to back dash on wakeup. He just threw it out there the first time. He’s probably played the guy before. I’m not sure if you can OS between the jab strings. Maybe you can.

Yeah, I think what’s going on here is a clever buffering of motions rather than o-s. If we look at three separate, yet related, occasions during the match, we can piece together what Aloha might be doing.

0:18 ~ backdash is punished with jab hand
0:20 ~ a loose c.jab string into jab hand punishes backdash
0:50 ~ tick c.jab into SPD

I think the key here is the loose c.jab string. Aloha could be buffering QCF or HCF motions with each jab and then choosing between one of three options based on how the chun player reacts:

 1. toss another c.jab
 2. turn the QCF motion into a dp-motion if he sees back dash
 3. turn a HCF into an SPD motion if he’s close enough to chun and she continues to block

It isn’t quite o-s’ing, but its worth trying out.

Won’t Chun’s EX SBK stop c.jab?

You’re probably right. Its possible the loose c.jab string would lose to reversal ex-sbk. I’m not near a console right now, so I can’t verify this.

But look at the situations where Aloha could be using this buffer:

0:18 & 0:20 ~ Haneyama doesn’t even have an ex bar, and thus may not have a decent counter

0:28 ~ Haneyama has ex, and may have been expecting the c.jab set-up. He goes for ex-sbk to counter, but Aloha counters the counter with a well-timed fierce headbutt --> dizzy

0:50 ~ Haneyama gets his ex-bar after Aloha’s fierce jump-in. In the confusion, Aloha is able to get in his jab follow-up and then SPD. Although this is a somewhat more dangerous situation, I think it was a great move.

The more I look at the match vid, the more I’m convinced this is what’s happening. Of course, its all just speculation. What do you guys think?

tell me what you guys think,

I need to start using Ultra David’s O,S, shit is gdlk!!!

ex SBK has 6 frames of start up. That’s plenty of time to do a safe meaty.

I guess, just thinking about c.lk instead shrug nothing more nothing less. I still question some of the frame counting stuff with fighting online. shrug

Crizzle, have you played Keno much before this? You either have some kind of read on his moves or just guessed really, really well. It seemed like almost every time you two played wake-up games, you came out ahead. Bravo, sir.

During your match against his boxer, I saw a lot of s.HK and s.MP. Not much lariat at all. Was this a conscious decision on your part? Did you say to yourself, “this guy is trying to punish my lariats with jump in combos, and I’m not going to give him that option” ? Or is that pretty much standard for how you play this match-up? Just asking because I thought it was pretty effective.

Crizzle, my man, I miss you. Good vid.

How do u kara palm?

im wondering. how do you hit the blanka ball… without doing the kara?

was it a fluke or something? ive hit the blanka ball before… a few times actually… without doing the kara…

naw just a mix of kara and walking forward. I hit it on Crouch block and on hit! Pretty hard though

anymore insight on that? what was i kara-ing? i just did the regular green hand motions or atleast i thought i was, went into training mode and just kept on trying it and got it only like 3 times out of 20 or so blocked balls.

ya there’s def more to it than meets the eye. FOr instance it was easier to do when gief was in neutral animation rather than walking forward, also its easier to do at point blank than far away. I think its a combination of giefs weird hit boxes and the different recovery animation depending on where blanka was in the ball (face hits you or his ass…etc)

You can get them again in the air with EXGH after getting them in the air with a regular GH? That’s pretty cool. Also, what was going on there with the focus into taunt? You can cancel focus with taunt? Or did you do ex armor cancel into taunt? I’m not really sure what happened there.

Question: If you had set Balrog to do jump back fierce instead would that regular hand get beaten? And does it work with all character’s jump back?
