Ok thats gotta be annoying if you don’t have answers. Lets break it down simply.
1.) He just runs gets meter looks for mashy dp fadc
2.) uses air tatsu as main escape
3.) sloppy footsie
So for number one you were doing the right thing in cutting the ring off, you should get one EX at all times vs shotos and if he is gonna run well get yours first. you got to tighten your timing with c.lk x N, if you have it on lock he should get hit trying to jump or mash a dp(sometimes the dp will come out though). When he is going to use air tatsu you can do two things; first you were doing headbutt which is good just remember to use mp version as you may get wacked with fp. Also you can hold back then as he is crossing your head go to up back(up forward once he goes over) and hit lp…not mp! As he falls you can set him up with meaty knee or whatever. Last you should not let him whiff c.mk’s on you, that should be insta s.lk xx ex hand and remember that s.lp and s.lk are both very useful in this match.
This is a great example of a runaway ryu in action. Thanks for uploading the vids, sinep!
One trick i’ve been working on to control air tatsu’s escape viability is to reverse input a lp. green hand as they pass over standing gief’s head and follow up with spd. This is tricky to time, and it takes some practice before you are able to correctly predict whether you’ll be close enough post-green hand to go for the throw. However, if you gauge the distances right with the appropriate green hand (remember: the stronger the punch, the closer to ryu you end up) in the best case you can turn his escape attempt into a free ultra for you!
edit-- this trick will work only at a certain range of distances from ryu. For example, at both 0:35 and 0:40 in your first vid you are at an appropriate distance from ryu, and a lp.gh timed early enough will get you next to him during his tatsu’s grounded recovery frames. Easy SPD. However, a few seconds later at 0:50 and 0:59 these tatsu’s are at a range where the trick probably will not work (at least I don’t think so).
So far I’ve determined that this trick is totally effective at a range anywhere between 1.5 to 2.5 “ryu-widths” from ryu. Give it a shot in training mode and test it out next time!
For your honda match, you can punish his neutral jump fierce with standing HK. I saw you do it once, but you could’ve been punishing that move many other times. Its annoying to deal with, so don’t let him spam it for free!
People have tried. I know there was a really good Ryu thread by a guy from st louis that talked about OS and Frame Traps, but it was eventually shut down into an epeen thread.
Since I picked up Zangief a few days ago I’ve been reading through here and it’s like :wow: compared to the other forums.
Yeah, everytime I decide to pick up a new character I glance in the forums to see whats ‘floating around’ as “important” information you need to know, and its just…yeah, hats off to the folks in this forum…its truly top tier :pleased:
wonder whats popping off in the Honda forums and akuma forums…
That chun liked to stand in front of you and meaty you alot, I’d recommend backdash LP SPD.
Shekeib does that crap all the time -.-
You do the same thing as that other guy with the whiffed MKs. You should go into training mode and get the distance down to lk X Hand those, though you did do it a couple times, he was whiffing them alot.
That fei long’s footsies were really good. There’s really no advice I can give you on that match. One thing, actually. On blocked flame kick, I think you can whiff cl.lk buffer 720. I could be wrong though.
Your lk xx hand was working pretty well in the Chun match. I was surprised you didn’t use it more in the Fei match. I find it very important in that match up since he relies mostly on pokes and punishing your mistakes. I’m working on getting it more consistent too. It’s a must in gief’s footsies game.
Yes Was Starnab, today we worked on the matchup, I have a lot of new solutions. Now bruce lee is going down
-MP to Counter rekka
-MK/cr.fierce to punish his cr.fierce
-Late jump in with fierce trade with all his dragon (ex include) at close range, if he does it well. ANd he loses more life than Gief.(on the life bar)
-Late splash crossup beats his escape kick -(don’t know the name)
-At wake up lariat and ex hand beats his normal dragon
With this he can’t stay too close, and pressure you in the corner you can poke. (Rekka was a big problem for me).
Now I have to find out if I can punish his back dash after focus attack
Here’s a good video of Zangief

Traitor ! I told you to keep this as a secret
Don’t worry i’m going back to training mode. I’ll make sure the match-up becomes 6-4… in Fei’s favor :arazz:
Joking aside, it’s more than ever a guessing game.
You can’t spam MP to counter rekka. Well timed rekka wins. And cr.FP beats Gief’s MP.
if I go for juggle with Cwing (flying kick) after traded j.HP / flame kick, you’ll lose more life than me.
I can cr.MK to go under your j.HP. But j.MK beats my cr.MK.
etc, etc…
Anyway, it’s a very interesting match-up. There’s always new stuff to work on.
I’m glad I’m not the only Fei who isn’t usually willing to dash forward after an FA against Gief . Anyway if you can do it early, Fei’s s.HK is a really good AA from my exp. iirc if you space + time it properly, all Gief has is an early j.MK, which should only trade with it. Also, in case you didn’t know you get a free HP Rekka if you block Gief’s s.MK, and a free LP/EX Rekka if you get hit with Gief’s s.MK (Not if it’s a CH, though). Theoretically you can punish with ultra on block as well, but at the range where any smart Gief will use it, the second hit of ultra will typically whiff. I agree that it’s an interesting match, and it really isn’t a really bad one for Fei imho.
What would you have done differently? The only glaring mistake to me was when you got greed for that cr.mk > ultra
Also, those announcers seemed like morons to me. “Justin has bad reaction time”. “Justin counter-picked your Zangief with Fei Long?” I just felt like these guys were talking out their asses…
I should’ve been using crouching short more, and hit confirming into ex greenhand. It’s something I need to practice, Fei would’ve bumped into a lot more cr shorts than st.mp’s. Very frustrating fight indeed - JW is a tough fight regardless of the character he chooses.
I?m a PC player and new to the forums. I just want to say ?Thanks!? for all the videos and comments. I?ve learned a great deal from the info here. Keep it up!
