I saw there was no thread for this game so here we are. I was unsure if the game deserved to be in the FG section and for now I put it in General Discussion.
The beta for this new Ubisoft IP game will start tomorrow at 6 AM PDT / 3 PM CET and will go on for 4 days.
What do you expect from this game? What faction/class will you choose? How viable do you think the competition will be knowing that Ubisoft kinda has no experience in competitive multiplayer? Do you think it is worth a shot for FG players?
It looks like they’re going for a FG/FPS hybrid, you’ll have 1v1 but also a 2v2 deathmatch and a 4v4 objective capture/control. Of course I’m mainly interested in the 1v1 first.
I’m just wondering how much depth will you have in a fight - moveset, combos, mix-ups, etc. - and how varied the classes will be. This will determine imho if the game can be a proper competitive FG or just a casual multiplayer game.
I normally look up info myself, but very quick, is it confirmed if the new beta is open beta for PS4 gamers? or its a sign up/invitation sort of thing?
I am miffed even the single player requires online, but the mainstream are totally accepting of Overwatch, and even Star Wars Batlefront is exclusively played for the online multiplayer (the offline/single player modes suck). ubisoft really doesnt want more money with the online only model. they are no Blizzard. and even then, its a fact they would profit mor emaking the SP playable offline. they must be so rich they dont care about times servers are not available or people with internet issues/access.
they practically render the videogame useless outside all internet factors.
The beta turns out to be pretty massive. You have most online modes as well as an extended tutorial section, training mode and vs AI.
It looks like the game has some MOBA elements into it (you need to beat minions to cap or defend some objectives). I didn’t expect that. Each class also bears the name of a MOBA class (assassin, tank…)
About the universal game mechanics:
you only have two attack buttons (light and heavy), but you have 3 directions and you can switch in between them mid combo to mix them up. You can also cancel heavy attacks with B/circle.
guard breaks are the throws of this game. You can choose to either just break their guard and attack or to throw them in some direction (useful I guess when there are environmental hazards). Guard breaks can also be teched with the same button.
there are parries you can do by pressing the direction of the opponent’s attack + strong attack at the very last moment that will put them into a stagger state.
throwing people into walls also puts them into a stagger state.
you have an instinct/overdrive mode that activates when you block or parry enough.
when facing multiple opponents at once you can still block attacks coming from left or right.
every character can press light+heavy attack at the same to attack all enemies surrounding him (useful if you’re surrounded).
every character has a running attack, even if they are different in what they do.
I’m still a little disoriented about having to control everything with the right stick but I guess it will come with the time.
Wardens (Knight/Vanguard) are pretty much the Ryu of this game. Short combos, easy to pick with tools for every situation.
Peacekeepers (Knight/Assassin) are hit & run characters (think of Nash in SF5 to get an idea), their goal is to deal bleed damage and escape as much as possible.
Conquerors (Knight/Tank) break every enemy chain on block, have infinites on lights and armored attacks that require charge. They look meter reliant, which isn’t surprising since they meant to defend a lot.
Berserkers (Viking/Assassin) are rushdown characters that can do left/right chain attacks that cost meter but become unbreakable after 4 hits and also keep him close to the opponent.
Raiders (Viking/Vanguard) have strong 3 hit combos, charge throws that launch you pretty far and stun attacks. Look pretty powerful imho.
Warlords (Viking/Tank) are short-ranged heroes with only two combos but a lot of counters and a counter stance that can be canceled into an unblockable.
Orochi (Samurai/Assassin) are very fast and have powerful counters, but can only block for a limited amount of time so you need to dodge a lot. Look very strong.
Kensei (Samurai/Vanguard) are long ranged with long combos that can be ended with an unblockable.
Nobushi (Samurai/Hybrid) are true zoners: very long range + bleed damage from afar + damage increased on a bleeding opponent + can cancel attacks into a stance. They seem to be very annoying.
There is much more variety than I thought both in the mechanics and the characters. I think it will take some time for me to choose the class; Berserkers seem pretty nice but I have to admit the Japs have the coolest classes…
As I said elsewhere, I’m struggling with this game because I can’t separate in my head the direction of my movements from the direction of my attacks. Therefore I keep using the left stick for both and either attacking always in the same direction or never switching the guard to block incoming attacks. It’s like for some reason the things I can do in a FPS just don’t work here because I want to play it like a fighting game.
I don’t particularly like either doing stuff like heavy attack > feint > throw or up+heavy > feint > left+light, which seems an important thing to master for advanced mind games. I have to do all those things with my thumb only and it doesn’t feel good at all. I don’t feel like adopting the claw grip or going to mouse+kb.
As much as I like the concept, I just don’t seem to be fit for the controls.
You may or may not get in. I suggest you to look on reddit to see if someone has a spare key for you. I sadly have none because I got mine with the SCARS program which was EU only.
WTF? Assassin and Tank are suddenly MOBA terms now? GTFO out of here man, those have been gaming terms since you were a sperm in your daddy’s crotch, youngster.
BTW, those are roles, not classes. Class is what game designers use to define the limits and abilities of each player. A role defines what functions a class’ abilities are supposed to serve within the game’s mechanics. Example: a tank in WoW is NOT the same thing as a tank in a MOBA. They have completely different methods of exploiting their abilities to perform the goal of tanking, as relevant to the mechanics of either game: Receiving and mitigating damage, in WoW’s case; and disrupting enemy controls and isolating key targets, in a MOBA’s case.
God I hate modern gamer mentality. LEARN, kid! You want to do something well, fucking LEARN it, don’t just assume.
Thanks for telling me everything I need to know about this game.
Woah, woah, hey, those terms far predate WoW, both in the MMO department and in RPGs as a whole. Called him out then referenced fuckin’ WoW… disgusting.
You’re all youngsters, go home!
Anyway, I really do want to try this game and have for awhile but Ubisoft continuously dodges me on the beta invites.
Game kind of reminds me of a Bushido Blade (2 specifically), mixed with Chivalry, which I am oooookay with.
Signed up for the beta a month ago, don’t think I received any keys either. Regardless, don’t think I’d have much time to play much anyway, will be busy till the end of next week. For those that do have beta access, let us know what you think! Been looking forward to this game since its announcement a couple E3s ago, so I’ll be keeping an eye on this thread!
EDIT: Wasn’t there already a For Honor thread? I remember reading one a couple months ago…could be wrong.
