Final Round 12 focus group discussion

lol! offense is the only skill worth testing!

Keep brawl, but run All-Brawl!

Nobody’s probably ever going to major melee tourneys (mlg and evo caliber) because of how smash panned out. Its basically the equivalent of what would have happened if, oh say, CvS2 came out and MvC2 dropped off?

I wont go as far as to say it’s terribly defensive as much as its a big poke fest. Its kinda odd to note that alot of melee matches start out looking like brawl matches, but the reason why people love melee is when somebody gets a hit, they can actually combo.

As for big melee tournies, there is a huge one happening in riversdale in june (i think 7th and 8th, i have to check). Pulling people from all over the east coast, and I even think some big name guy from canada is coming. XD

Ya know, from 1 stand point, i think that’s completely unfair. I say it’s unfair that yet another place is shutting out 1 game for a game that is fundamentally the same, but in large different. I mean, correct me if im wrong, when T4 came out, TTT didnt get dropped off the face of the earth? And when TTT came out T3 didnt get dropped off (i could have my timing on that wrong).

But on the other point, the point of actually running the thing, i do understand where you’re coming from. There were enough delays to the tourney for a few people (Hell, im not gunna lie, it was the President’s fault for being too good. >.> ), and having a melee and a brawl tourney would make it soooo much worse.

As for the time, the time limit has been upped to 8 minutes again (just fyi).

The same. I prefer Melee in majors. I don’t like getting punished just for moving around when a tourney is on the line D=
~Shrugs~
Luckily we have a tournament that Dogysamich mentioned called “THE GREATEST MELEE TOURNEY EVER SINCE BRAWL CAME OUT”

I dunno, here’s a random suggestion.

If there is a separate room for some events, how bout have a set of 2ways or walkie talkies or whatever so that the staff can have quick access to each other instead of having to walk in and out, or asking unreliable people (read: me. XD) to go look for somebody.

We are going to get walkie talkies next year, but that still wont make players play FASTER SIR!:annoy::wasted::looney::rofl: The time limit is the issue with me being an tournament organizer having over 8 games being played in one day and people playing in multiple games that could slow or stop the tournament.

Justin was winning in every tournament, so the whole tournament was locked down at times when he went to play smash for 30-45 minutes to play against 1 PLAYER!!! In other fighting games he could have played atleast 3 rounds of matches within that time frame! To smash players it seems like a short time because they are use to the long time limits and they were looking for him also, but to the rest of the tournament it takes forever.:looney::looney:

We will get it right at FRXII.:karate:

Maybe since Smash takes so long, it should be moved to the very last tourney. That way people can also leave earlier.

The quicker games should run earlier, the last game of the day should be your long games like CvS2 and Smash. Quick games like ST should go in the morning or noon.

Good idea sir. The problem is smash was the last tournament to end. We went 2 hours over 12midnight and that cost me an extra 300 bucks in late fee’s.:confused:

You know I have a fix for Smash running long.

from what i understand, you’re gunna go down for attempted murder this summer for what you’re trying. XD
__

But heck, if it’s so long it’d cause a problem, it’d be better to not run it. I mean, from what I can tell, you wont be able to get it in the main room, it would hold up half the venue for like, an entire day.

Sure you would have an easier time getting to people like that, and sure there would be alot more tvs (how many did brawl have? 4?) But that would be a ridiculous amount of time to dedicate to it.

__
Who knows, maybe you could get away with going the other direction with time and shorten it, maybe knock off a stock. Most people will show up for the money alone.

2 stocks, 3 minutes, all items on except heart/tomato/star/curry. Go. Fastest brawl tourney ever.

i still think that’s hilarious.

I hope EVO Finals are in Las Vegas again. It’ll be so fitting for brawl seeing how it’s been reduced to pot luck. Cant wait to see finals ended cause somebody gets a random bob-omb dropped on them midsmash.

Which would be fine by me, i dont see why half the smash players cant play 2 games anyway, but if you want to aid in killing the game off, i shouldnt complain.
__

But we’re not talking about EVO, we’re talkin final round, and im still tryin to throw ideas around to help out.

I mean, the quick fix for this would be more setups. I’m assuming people would be willing to bring setups, especially the ones that were at FRXI. Its not like it’s anything new to them, they do it all the time.

Come to think of it, i dont remember seeing a request for setups for XI, although I could be wrong. May be something to consider.

You are entitled to your opinion, no matter how ignorant it may be.

Except that bob’ombs are not turned on at Evo. Strike two.

I’m trying to give the game (the WHOLE game) a real competitive life. Not the everything-we-dont-like-turned-off sham of a life melee miraculously enjoyed.

The fix is simple. Run All-brawl, or some very similar variation. Have a finals that people actually get hype watching, instead of falling asleep to. Do the right thing, Larry. :bgrin:

You could always do what Evo did for CvS2 one year and make the first two rounds in winners and losers with 1 fewer stock/1 less minute or something, and DQ like a mofo.

Or run it in pieces with winners bracket early Friday, losers bracket early crack of dawn Saturday, and grand finals late Saturday or something.

Running early means other games would be impacted less, and there’s no rule that says tournies have to start in the pm, especially in the case of Smash where they don’t generally participate in other games.

Fact is, the Smash community is probably going to be very distrusting of SRK-related stuff after Evo, which is two things- an obstacle and an opportunity. One other idea- work with the smash community, see what time you can give them, and have them work out a compromise. If you let them know, “Hey, if we get THIS many people, we won’t have time to give 3 stocks/7 minutes to every match, what do you suggest”

One final option if need to cut down on the Smash tourney: $25 to enter. That will price out the scrubs and make it smaller. That should be a last resort though.

I’m with Keits,I think All-Brawl is way better of a game. Whats the point of playing the game if you have to turn most of it off? But my opinion doesn’t matter,so yeah…

Shame to you, which is why i havent been arguing with you

Oh my bad, you said ALL ITEMS EXCEPT for four of them. Forgive me for reading.

But going against what got the game popular in the first place. Again, im not going to argue with you. I know it’s pointless cause that’s what happens when people have power. If and when i go to evo this year, now i have absolutely no reason to go for brawl, it’s that simple.

People will be hype about? Half the brawl players wont be hype for their own game cause people are starting to realize how bad it is. Im not gunna lie that watching smash is boring to somebody on the outside, just like watching mvc2 is to an outsider, and tekken, etc etc.

I still think it’s funny that people like you are trying to “make brawl a hype game”, when brawl is actually everything that SRK (read: people like you) has hated for years about melee. I dont understand how people just dont see it.

Again, im trying not to argue over EVO. It’s already been done and it’s been said that listening to people was not an option.

That’s what i was saying (not trying to cut you off or anything). You’d be hard pressed to get people to agree with it, since there would be too many people complaining about “oh but it’s always ran like this”.
I laughed when i finally saw a smash tourney without pools, but i was shocked myself to see the way the counterpick rule was enforced.

So, it’s a long shot, but it’d work

Whatever happens…I ain’t running Smash this year. Thhat going back and forth from room to room shit is for the birds! Best 2 out of 3 for Smash ain’t POPULAR!

@Shinblanka: Rei is trying to come to FRXII this year. She wants to run the store. So I’ll be free to do interviews now and get crowd response. If she comes.

Larry - get a Marvel Super Heroes War of the Gems board and run a tourney for that please!

heck, assuming i show up (which im looking to), you lemme bring a pillow and i’ll help run it.

i dont know if this will help since u are going to get alot of ppl for smash how about you put five or six ppl in a group and everyone play each other one time and th person with the most wins goes on to the next around after doing that u should have about the top ten and go from there
i dont know sounds good

I read through most of the suggestions and i have a few ideas and hopefully this helps. These are what i took to get my thoughts on this so if i have reiterate anything i would like to also apologize from now.

Havoc has been very opinionated on this topic and i believe has brought up great conversation but he is looking at it from the point of a player.

Larry- you have the responsibility to look at it as a manager/tournament director - which you are responsible for the whole picture and can’t skip over any detail.

That being said as captain obvious i continue.

Raising the door fee ($30) in conjuction to increasing the days from 2 to 3 i agree with.

giving people more for what they paid for is just plain good business. Maybe adding in teams tournaments on the day you do the smaller tournaments i believe would be a great addition and it would give platform for what we don’t have alot in the U.S. a specific day for team battles in the big games.

Increasing the prices for entry would be a bad idea and deterant for people to compete. I hear and completely understand havoc’s point but, he is not considering the fact that shit happens and double the base amount affect’s people decision(basics of the supply and demand curve). Risk aversion now becomes a real issue. Yes, you weed out the ‘scrubs’ and increase the serious competitors but you would also ruin the experience for people that would just like to try just to see how they compare to the best that show and participate. Larry it would be unwise to not consider these people.

Numbers are also what make sponsors participate because it’s how they get free marketing and anything that would jeopordize that would also be unwise. Make the sponsors give you the money to increase the pot split to the top 5 or top 8 competitors rather than transferring that cost to the players. That would be a greater incentive for everyone. ‘Getting More for paying Less.’ Sponsors have more people coming out and it’s tax write off. Also more cheap marketing for them.

Your cost would also go up if your numbers were to go down. Hotel deals would suck and trust me i know i work in the industry. you can’t give the a set number or rooms to block they can’t give the rate and you can’t get the discount on the ball room.

Bottom Line-

i’m all for the entry fee increase if it’s to give more to participants.

i’m also for a entry fee increase if it’s for a better venue- i didn’t add that earlier but i should. One question though- if you go to a convention center would you still be able to get room deals with a neighboring hotel that would lower your room rental costs.

I disagree with increasing the tournament fee for games outside of the two you mentioned.

Smash and Tekken are 90% an independent community and this is based off my experience as a tournament hoster myself. Increasing there fee to $20 would not affect those communities that much and the 10% that play all the games and tekken/smash being one or both of those games won’t hurt that much because they will still show for the other 5 games that they are willing to pay at the affordable price.

Your numbers will stay in tact. You will be able to have a selling/attractive point to your sponsors. your hype will not deminish. With more space you could have more tv’s to support smoother running of tournaments. The possibilities are endless.

I would write more but my time is short.

Take it easy guys.

David.
