Your posts are non-sensical and relies too much on baseless assumptions. Seriously, comedic satire? Then assuming she’s a wasted slot and Chun-li is more appealing than her, when those are clearly your personal preference.
The fact that you said that Minette would be a wasted slot who many people won’t pick, then say that she can cause unhype due to being seen in tournaments more often, shows that you don’t know what you’re arguing about. That example you used could apply to anyone.
And the question isn’t why Minette is disliked, it’s why there’s a strong, irrational hatred towards her. Which is really simple psychologically: it’s because she got associated with joke characters, waifus, brain-dead moé animu, and other things that the haters hate. Whether it’s true to her or not doesn’t matter. Since she got associated with them, she gets hated.
As for unhype factors, those things are almost always due to things lacking in novelty, such as boring repetitive mechanics like the keepaway fireball spam. It doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with characters or aesthetics, unless those things are associated to them like the aforementioned Morrigan or overused top-tier characters. Other unhype factors are stuff like cheap ringouts.
And Battle Fantasia’s problem isn’t just because of Coyori. It’s because it’s Battle Fantasia.
Why do people care so much about a male character? Is it really so hard to accept the fact that this game is mostly girls? Can you people not keep your testosterone in check?
I’m not even going to waste too much time responding to your post. “Why is there a strong, irrational hatred towards her” is not even a question and it’s assuming there’s no legitimate reason to not like Minette. I love people who bash other people’s opinions and then make and even more pointless counter argument in the same post.
Yes, it is mathematically possible for someone that’s 1/13 of the cast to show up more often in tournaments then a similar character that is 1/50 of the cast, even if the majority of players never choose her.
How about, hear me out now, we pick characters because they sound like someone we would want to play, and not because of what they have in their pants.
Give me a male character I like more than Scythana and we might be able to work something out. On another note, “They” obviously didn’t want another male character in SG. Implying that our votes were wrong is incredibly stupid of you
Because the majority made a decision, it doesnt imply that the outcome is right, such an assumption is extremely stupid. Why the hell should I work anything out with you?? You arent Mike Z or have any influence on the outcome or progress of the game. You arent important at all. I just posted my opinion and I am not alone with it either.
The outcome can’t be right or wrong since character preference is completely subjective. A lot of people would’ve preferred the design of another female character over Big Band, even. A lot of people wouldn’t. Apparently more people prefer female designs, or the gameplay of the female characters. That’s why we have the voting process.
I think they totally dropped the ball with Big Band, really. How was Panzerfaust not the most popular male prior to this vote? There’s no way they could’ve known Beowulf would be so popular, sure, but Panzerfaust has always seemed to be way more popular than Big Band.
Honestly, I don’t really have a problem with Minette per se. What amazes me is seeing people scramble over their own feet for a character like her, when we have other characters with much more interesting and dynamic playstyles in the fray. You claim that you may just be interested in her unique playstyle, well ok, that’s a fine and perfectly legitimate reason. But unless you were a Roll fanatic in MvC2 or some shit (which, I doubt most of Minette’s fans even are) then I don’t see why people drool over her (you know, besides these waifu idiots).
This is also on top of the fact that ( I feel) Minette adds a minimal amount of diversity between the current cast members, especially when even compared to the other possible DLC choices. How many powerhouse/gigantic characters do we have in Skullgirls? None. Yet Panzer got outed. How many command flight based or Magneto-like characters do we have? None. And still Brain Drain is on the fence.
But what aggravates me more than anything, is that there are people out there voting for “their waifus” and these joke characters just for shits and giggles. It’s people who want fan service vs. people who want a new level of depth and fun added to their game through the addition of these characters.
Thank you Based Broads for making Eliza a playable character.
Now let’s get Peng in this bitch. Not because she’s “kawaii,” but for the fact she plays like Psylocke! Yesssss.
By the way, where did people get the idea that Minette’s moveset is going to be all about hurting the opponent accidentally? A lot of people have been saying that, but I just don’t get it, did I miss Mike talking about her on Salty Cupcakes or something? I would assume she’ll have regular punches and kicks just like anyone else, and her zoning will be based on summons/throwing stuff. She’ll have combos, she’ll have rushdown potential. She knows she’s in a fight and she’s trying to win it. Obviously she’s not a hardened warrior, but people act like all she’s going to do is stand there and look kawaii while bad things happen to the opponent.
And yeah @The Martian, I’m not a hardcore Minette fan or anything, but for me personally, her playstyle is something I’d like to see in the game. I feel like there’s a lot of confusion floating around about what she’s going to play like. People keep quoting Roll as the only influence, but I’m pretty sure her playstyle is going to end up closer to Hisui from Melty Blood, or maybe Blackheart, or Relius. I could be wrong, but that’s what I was expecting and that’s why I voted for her towards the end.
I can’t just want a male character so we can at least have more than one that might not even be of interest to me? Male characters were always planned and it’s not like their gameplay mechanics and designs aren’t on par with all the other females up for vote.
How is Stanley a meme? Even if he is, I don’t see people taking issue with all the ridiculous voice packs being added along with Robo-Fortune that easily have the same connotations.
Off the top of my head, the only wholly new concepts are time travel (Isaac, Aeon) and Adam being a “team character.” Minette’s style is at least more uncommon than most of the other characters’.
By my definition, a joke character is one who is deliberately made much weaker than the rest of the cast (Dan, Toro/Kuro, Nijima in Kenichi). By contrast, Bob and Rufus and even Arakune are intentionally ridiculous designs with improbable fighting styles (and hardly aesthetically pleasing), yet are very popular due to their effectiveness. If we postulate that Minette would be good and “cute”, then how is she a joke compared to, say, Peacock, Panzerfaust or Ottomo?
If these people know next to nothing about fighting games and mostly care about testosterone and boobs, then why are they watching EVO instead of wrestling? If spectators can handle Sakura, Lili and Leixia in their respective (far more macho-oriented) series, then Minette shouldn’t be enough to turn anyone off a Skullgirls final.
Because we only get 2 voted characters. Robo is being made from scraps and we get a bazillion voice packs because THESE WERE DONATED, not funded. The VAs get nothing for the packs.
There is also no basis upon which to say that your view of what a correct outcome is, is right either. It is very arrogant of you to state that your choice(voting for a male character) is the only correct option.
Also I voted for Eliza so it looks like I, along with many others, had an influence on the progress of the game. Doesn’t it? You butthurt motherfucker.
Dude seriously, you’re the one who started this with comparing Minette to TvC Roll, it’s only natural that the conversation would evolve to include her other reference characters and their respective games. Character amount shouldn’t matter, besides if you go back and look through, which character did Mike have to purposefully express would not be a joke character? It wasn’t Minette, it was Aeon due to her overpowered nature (and yes her reference of Omega Tom Hanks, which is hilariously broken) as a god character.
Thanks for the video and the reminder of games long past, know why Battle Fantasia isn’t around any more? Not because of the wacky cast, not because it features a waitress (by your logic that means that there are hopefully about 11 hype characters, and 1 anti-hype character aka Coyori), but because it was an average Arc Sys title with limited features and nearly no advertising that would soon be swept away by the coming storm of Street Fighter IV. Simple. The designers aren’t haunted by the inclusion of Coyori as if she was the catalyst to the failure of the game, each of them waking up in a cold sweat every night, “Oh why did I agree to make that stupid waitress character!? We must have designed her while snorting all that cocaine with our rolled up 10,000 yen bills!!”
I’ll openly admit that aesthetics (when speaking solely on a character’s outward physical appearance) mean absolute nothing to me, it’s all about the way the character plays/interacts with their environment that mean everything to me. And no, I will not go away because my opinion is different than yours, I’ve not asked you to leave once have I? No because you and I are entitled to opinions (of which yours sometimes crosswires with your understanding of fact), mine is that Minette has a valid place on the roster. Yours is not. Thats 110% okay with me and will remain that way even if she loses the 2nd round. Skullgirls will still be fun, Valentine, Parasoul, and Squiggly are all still in the game, so whatever I know I’ll survive just fine. What my question was, that a lot of people keep missing (Thank you Zero-Shift and Psycho Power J for your input, you guys are on it!), is why is there actual venomous hate for Minette? There will be no factual answers to the irrationality behind it so please stop trying to force your opinion as fact.
How do you define what is more interesting vs what is not? We are all allowed to define what interests us without regarding the masses and I personally am fully interested in her playstyle. How would the customer/tip mechanic work? Will her confidence feature cause her gameplan to shift, start out a zoner at lower levels and mid way through start breaking into some serious rushdown? I can’t speak for those who are basing their opinions purely on how “moe” she is because that is not an important factor in my decision (how is it that people still don’t see this? I say it in almost every post…), however is that valid reason to hate a character?
Thats fine Martian, if that is your opinion than that’s that. My opinion? Panzerfaust, Black Dahlia, among other characters add a minimal amount of diversity to the roster. They’re very popular and have cool aesthetic designs but similar playstyles to characters already in the game (I shouldn’t have to allude you to whom but check their references). However, if they were voted in to the top 4 over Minette would you see me going stupid and trying to make everyone who voted for them feel bad? Absolutely not. If the majority speaks (of which I’ve been reminded multiple times, the majority consists of the casual audience) than they speak. They put their money in, they have bought a say, they will use said say, and we must all realize that.
Remember the post where I begged the question, why the hate? “waifu” voting was one of the multiple cookie cutter answers that would not be a valid reason for the hate. Not all of us think of her as a “waifu” or whatever, some might and there’s nothing we can do about that, but being outright angry/offended because people are voting (no matter their reasoning) for any character is ridiculous. I want Minette for that exact reason, I want “a new level of depth and fun added to their game through the addition of these characters,” and I think Minette can deliver. Besides we have enough fan service in the game (character animations, audible references, palettes, and even move sets), I’m not sure that crying against more fan service is even a valid argument at this point. Squiggly, Big Band, Eliza, (Insert 2nd vote winner here), and Robo Fortune will all have fan service built in to their DNA. It’s Skullgirls, people love that shit and Lab Zero knows this, that’s why Skullgirls is known as a “love letter” to fighting games. It is a form of indirect fan service to fighting game players world wide and was built that way. Ignoring that important fact numbs the mind to the higher levels of inside jokes, self referencing, and fun that comes from playing Skullgirls with people who know fighting games.
