Fighting games and the GTA generation

Other than the lack of Shooters, what’s changed?

How many can you name?

for the last time there WAS NO LACK OF SHOOTERS THEN, that was the prime time of shooters.

Don’t blame things on a problem that didn’t exist… the prime of shooters was the 90’s

Just the fact that the new Final Fight looks like one is a horrifying thought.

Halo 2 got big becauseof the realism in multiplayer, grenades and all were pretty damn good for a multiplayer deathmatch game, it was a slower pace than quake(took me a long time to adjust), but once I did I never looked back, now when I go to play quake 3 or UT I spit at them, cause the games are too fast paced and unrealistic compared to Halo, and I dont care what anyone says, but how the hell is Counter Strike realistic?, the movement of the characters, the hit boxes, I mean, does it feel real to you when you shoot someone in counter strike, that game is garbage IMO and always will be.

as for the fighting game scene, it is VERY sad, I have only found a couple people who take 2d fighters seriously at my college and a couple more who say they are good at the arcades as opposed to the PS2 stick, but asides from that, we always get the jackasses who say dumb shit like “how do you block?” or “how do you do a super?” ugh…its heart wrenching and disgraceful to see how unpopular street fighter is nowadays…the competitive world of fighters from the 90s etc has evolved into Madden and halo, lol. IMO thats where most of the competion is nowadays, if you want to get a good minute or more of smack talkin done, halo and madden seem to ignite them the best now.

not enough to fill the ‘every game’ statement, but quite a few fit that ‘mold’.

i think a better statement would be that there are far too many games coming out that are outright derivitives of other games (getting up, the warriors, condemned) that have come out within 2 years. the only differences i see are better controls and/or a fair - good storyline.

i don’t want to say that any game coming out doesn’t copy from something else, but some of the titles i’ve picked up lately (phantom dust, geometry wars, and lego star wars) at least provided enough fun that i didn’t get halfway through it and put it on the ‘to play later’ shelf. (such as metroid prime 2, doa4, pdz).

Who said it wasn’t? 0_o

I think the problem is that every game with a remotely urban theme automatically gets associated with GTA, regardless of how much or little it actually has in common with it

bitching about fast paced, and unrealistic, on a 2d fighter board is comical, but to each their own.

Feel free to prove me wrong, but I can’t think of a single ‘urban’ game since Jet Grind that hasn’t had the same basic mechanics.

um, do i even need to explain your idoticy? hmm 3d shooters…2d fighters…:looney:

Guys please be nice to each other. :stuck_out_tongue:

This thread is starting to feel like an XBOX LIVE session with all the insults flying around. We’re all fighting game fans, shouldn’t we respect each others in spite of our different opinions?

Anyway. I’m not here to preach :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll agree with the Urban game thing. Since the massive mainstream success of GTA : SA, everybody and its dog has tried to make more games sharing the same feel and borrowing many gameplay elements. 25 To Life, Getting Up, True Crime NYC, 50 Cent’s Shitty Game and even Final Fight Streetwise… And aside from Madden (or NHL here in Canada), this is what the masses want to play now.

I guess it wasn’t different in the early nineties when every company out there tried to copy SFII, be it SNK with Fatal Fury (especially the second one) and Art of Fighting, Konami with Martial Champions, ADK with World Heroes, Data East with Fighter’s Destiny or Midway, of course, with its horrible Mortal Kombat. But at least, those were video games inspired by video game trends, not MTV inspired pop culture.

Was it really better? I don’t know. But I sure loved it more.

I think another problem with the appeal of fighting games is lack of skill… Sure 3D fighters get a lot of play around here, but its not like anybody is actually trying to learn how to play… All I usually see are people who try to win by button mashing.

…Which leads to why a majority of people completely hate 2D fighters. It’s just downright sad to see people say the game is shit because they cant win by mashing. It’s even sadder if you DO try to tell them some basics, and then they quit and never touch a 2D game again because they cant perform a damn hadouken.

GTA clones…

Total carnage
50 cent
Simpson hit and run
ride or die 187 ( you don’t really get out the car tho its kinda like a hip hop twisted metal but no where as good)
mencenrys

those are the few i can think of off the top of my head, that ive actually put time into. I know htere more but i can’t think of them now.

destroy all humans… gta meets mars attacks.

Sweep Sniping is not realism, super jumping is not realism, no fall damage is not realism, Noob combos are not realism, auto aim that makes any newb look good is not reaslism. Nice try though

What those kids ment by fighters being “too short” is they simply play them on single player. We play with others, human competition.

they pop 50 cents into Soul Calibur 2 or Marvel Vs Capcom 2 and beat it without losing, and that sort of leaves an impact that fighting games have no real depth.

This kid I took to the arcade after I praised MVC2 thought he couple mop the floor with anyone at that game because he beat it.

Needless to say, I put in my 50 cents and that was the end of that mentality for him. All these kids need is a good beat down at any fighter of their choice and for the most part reality sets in for them.

you know what i mean, obviously its not 100 percent real, but it is more realistic then any other popular 3d multiplayer FPS out there…

Halo > UT and Quake

I would beg to differ. Especially considering Halo wasnt meant to be realistic in anyway possible.

you dont have to beg, go ahead, differ from me, thats what its all about discussion and debates, thats what makes a community, not negetive repping someone because they oppose your thoughts…anyways name one/some FPS multiplayer games that are popular and more realistic than halo or halo 2.
