Fighting games and the GTA generation

Halo’s not realistic. Square-enix games aren’t realistic. World of Warcraft isn’t realistic. So, I’d have to say no.

I must be lucky. My experience with that game online has been one of the best ones I’ve had with any game. A handful of drops here and there, and some bitching about ninjas but nothing that bad

fighting games arne’t big and flashy in kids eyes, so they suck. similar to TV… they’re not filled with fluff and random nonsense, therefore they suck… they also suck if they have to think about it more… is it just me, or was final fantasy x rediculously easy?.. fable, rediculously short?.. yeah… kbyethx… fighting games have served us well, but they’re dying, and it’s fucking sad…

Are fighting games dying? Or are Capcom’s fighting games dying? Cuz other ones seem to be selling just fine

capcom’s not dying. capcom’s fighting games are dead… they’re parried, shippu’d, and ggpo capcom.

SNK has always been running strong, overseas… rarely do you see stateside SNK games… the 2 KoF collections and MI aren’t close to what came out in japan already… it’s nothing to brag about… i mean, PSX had about the same amount, and how many had them? fatal fury real bout, samsho 3 (GAY), and kof 95 i believe… japan, iirc had up to 99 for PSX… i think evoultion came out on PSX also… either way, SNK’s fanbase isn’t that grandspectacular in the states that capcom was…

namco’s still doing good, but as you can see with SC3, they’re following the “flashy, but not as good” trend. now, of course that’s my opinion, but i don’t feel that SC3 is as good as SC2. tekken is still strong.

dead or alive is strong, but is it a good fighter at the same time? no.

mortal kombat is strong, but it’s not even a game… i don’t know what the fuck to classify that steaming piece of excrement as.

virtua fighter wasn’t ever really big after VF2 here i don’t think… i rarely see VF in the arcades, i know not a single soul that owns the game.

guilty gear is doing well, steadily increasing it’s fanbase. good job

the DBZ series is doing good only because of it’s anime fanbase, IMO… on SNES, i knew not a single person that didn’t own the power rangers and TMNT games, even though for the most part, they suck (although the beat em up tmnt games were pretty fun)

the rest of the good fighters… yeah, ok, how many people have actually heard of FotNS, MB series, and Rumble Fish? you HAVE to be joking if you think that a good portion of this country has actually heard of them. yeah, a good portion of the fighting game community has, but think about that. it’s the fighting game community.

ok, now think about that… and think about 8-10 years ago…

marvel superheroes and xmen vs sf were everywhere… my karate school had a cabinet. super turbo and alpha 1 & 2 were also everwhere. then you got SNES with it’s plethora of fighting games, and PSX. around this time, you couldn’t go anywhere without finding at least ONE fighting game… now there are several arcades that don’t have anything but little stupid games and ddr. but compare the fighting game scene around the time say… mvc 1 came out (7 or so years ago), as compared to the way it is NOW…

Of course not. I was talking about the games you mentioned earlier. The fact that you don’t like SC3 (how is this any flashier than previous SC games, anyway?) DoA or MK has nothing to do with it. And I assume VF4 sold pretty well if it became a greatest hits title.

I always see people talking about how fighting games are dying. But really, aside from SF everything seems to be doing okay

I’d say classic 2d fighters are dying to be more specific. You wouldn’t believe how many customers I had who came in asking for a nice new fighters and when I showed them SS tenka they booyed it’s 2d and went for something like Def Jam or Budokai ( I personnaly have all 3 budokais: the extent of the game is the first one who hits the 3 button combination to transform into lvl 20462748693264 super sayajin and one shots the other)

SC3 to me, is overdone graphics in place of gameplay… every time a new SC comes out, i like it less and less… SC2 was borderline crap to me… SC3 just made it worse

virtua fighter 4 went on GH after the price was dropped to $20 anyways… and then VF4:evolution isn’t a true by the books GH, since it was released a GH… GH isn’t what it used to be… the rules are less demanding from what i’ve heard / seen

and as already pointed out. it’s not SF games that are doing badly… it’s 2D games in general… there’s a reason why a majority of SNK’s titles never reach the mass market in the states. it’s also the reason why mortal kombat and DoA sell more than guilty gear… capcom’s at the bottom IMO right now, but they’re not the only ones suffering… the rest of them aren’t doing phenominal either… namco is probably making the most money currently off of fighting games.

Actually, Virtua Fighter 4 never really made it Greatest Hits. Sega wanted to release Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution for the PS2, but Sony didn’t let them, unless they did it at a reduced price under the greatest hit label, since it was deemed too similar to the first one, according to them. Or so I’ve heard. I’ve never seen a regular, non-Evo Greatest Hits VF4, but I could be mistaken.

We can all pretty much agree that Capcom fighters are all dead, but I don’t think the rest of the industry is “doing okay” around here. DoA gets some popularity on the XBOX, Soul Calibur still draws a good chunk of its crowd from the fantasy loving crowd (the kind that goes : “SC is better than any other fighting game because it has weapons!!!1”) and Tekken still sells rather well, but is nothing compared to the popularity Tekken 3 had in 1998/99. Arcades are dead in most smaller cities, and dying in the bigger ones, nobody plays VF anymore and non Capcom 2D fighters are completely ignored by most people (Just ask today’s Joe Gamer about SNK and enjoy the blank stare). I wouldn’t say the fighting game scene is “doing okay”.

And you mentioned Square-Enix’s popularity earlier when I talked about the overrated trend toward “realism” in games. Sure, Square had their moments in the PS days, and are still enjoying a rather nice popularity among the RPG loving crowd, but their popularity in North America is nowhere as high as it was in the late 90s.

Finally, Halo’s a FPS. Somehow, that genre is still mega popular no matter what the artistic style of the game is. As for WoW’s insane popularity… I sure don’t know. Like the guys at Penny Arcade once said, Blizzard probably employed Satan himself as a consultant.

VF4 did became GH, it sold 600k or something. So people do buy the game.

SSTenka? Don’t you mean SSV?
Tenka isn’t out in america yet, and I seriously doubt it ever will!

Well, I stand corrected, then. But VF4 also recieved a huge amount of positive press when it was released. I’m pretty sure that helped.

I bought the game for that very reason in 2002. EGM said it was godly. I had not even played another VF game seriously before buying VF4, aside from a few quick rounds of the original one in the arcades in 93…

I wish more fighters could get such a media push.

I never understood the GH qualifications.

If VF4 sold 60K and became a GH, then why not EX3 that sold 180K in japan and 230K stateside.

Just doesn’t make much sense.

I mean 600k, not 60k for VF4. here:

My bad. Was reading a post on Tenka at the same time and got them confused.

Not really. FPS games are popular because since 1996 the FPS genre has defined competitive/pro gaming. When you think top notch competitions it’s FPS (unless you live in korea where starcraft owns your soul). People just keep throwing money at it.

It’s mega popular because you can win 200grand plus a year, even if you are not fatality, and the game devs keep pumping money into it.

The artistic style does suffer. Most “casual” FPS players fall into the realism shooters, ie counter strike, battlefeild 2, DoD, and your random generic WW2 shooter… the sci-fi (quake, and unreal) side is small, but gets the most money events and stays active as 1v1 and 2v2 death match.

FPS popularity really has nothing to do with anything but the competitions for it, you will find in PC fps games people swap games several times a year for which ever event has 35grand or more for a first place payout.

If you sucked the money and the sponsorships out of FPS gaming, the entire genre would implode rapidly.

I have to say there’s a huge loss of perspective here.

We (by we I mean the gaming community as a whole) were graphics whores during the 16-bit era too. I can remember 8 year old battling it out over whether the Genesis of the SNES had better graphics.

The reason street fighter was THE game to play back then is because there was nothing like it before. To the “GTA Generation” it’s all old news.

i would have to say my biggest gripe is the GTA generation as a whole though… every game that’s coming out is a GTA clone or an FPS… you got a couple good adventure games out there, RE4, GoW, etc… but still. i remember there was a time about 2 years ago when every major game was either FPS or a GTA clone… when street fighter was popular, sure you had SF, MK, the SNK line, but you also had SHMUPS, some legendary RPGs, the beginings of FPS, incredible platformers (gunstar fucking heroes anybody?), and the beginings of survival horror as we know it today (not afraid of the dark anymore, but resident fucking evil)

actually FPS was just as whored out in the SF times as it is now, it’s just one of the few genres that never went into decline.

what FPS other than quake, duke, and doom were there?

unreal, counter strike, half life, wolf, desent, system shock, marathon, tribes, dues ex, sequels for most of those games a couple times over and several more

the high point of FPS gaming was 2001, the great times were 96-2000, it’s been going down hill since then.

The prize money hasn’t even gone up that much, it’s still 35 grand for 1st place 1v1, with the odd ferrari (from quake 1 back in the late 90’s) or 150 grand first place thrown in.

The only FPS fluke since then has been halo… which as an FPS, doesn’t even have that many players, and has just about nothing in prize money.

Post that late 90’s era, the MMORPG crowd has been killing off FPS games, it’s just that money competition stayed with FPS
