This depends, i have shipped shirts to Europe before for about the same as shipping to CA.
This. I was talking to a friend of mine who does some great t-shirt designs and specifically told him he could make a good profit putting that talent to use in the FGC. Right now the designs border more on the clever and punchline-ish side instead of being visually appealing nice shirts. Kineda’s characture shirts are probably the best designed right now. The nicest stuff is probably Triumvir Psycho Brigade line because it looks as if some quality went into it.
Take into account a person’s style. A shirt may look cool on the site, but when you put it on it could look awful. Instead of just pushing out cool shirts, take into account current trends. Go to Macy’s and look at the jeans they’re selling - how will your shirts look with those? It’s going to get chilly, how are they going to look under an unzipped hoody or jacket?
I want to buy them…but a lot of designs are kinda bootleg streetwear mixed with SF fandom and I can’t spend $30 on that. I wouldn’t mind a shirt with just like say, a big ass picture of Geese or Sagat on it.
If they looked good, were simpler, and didn’t depend on character art and community catchphrases, then I’d maybe buy one.
Want something that’s less “I’m a geek, look at this FG-related thing on my shirt” and more decent shirt that happens to be FG related.
$15 is the maximum that I would spend on any shirt 'cause I’m poor.
Is it still possible to get a Team NAH shirt?
And does any one know where i can get a Trapcom shirt?
Prices in most cases are a bit high, and I can’t find a Vampire Savior shirt.
Also, a friend of mine has a Triumvir SF2 shirt and the quality on it doesn’t seem so great. It’s like paper thin. Anyone else have one with this same problem?
I heard you kind of had to be in the know for these and that there wasn’t a whole lot. Shame because it’s one of the only FG shirts I’d get.
No difference in wearing band/sports shirts to me. Besides, it’s still way ahead of wearing those god awful T’s with a bunch of wolves howling at the moon or some shit.
I quite like some of the designs on Eternal Rivals and they don’t have bank breaking prices, though I’ve never checked if they post to UK or what their postage would be, which could obviously make it more expensive to people overseas.
Maybe I’m not looking in the right places, but the only stores I see FG Ts in are record stores, comic book stores and manga/anime type stores and they’re usually really bad designs of about 3 characters from SF.
They look bad.
I would love to buy more FG related apparel, but most of the time the designs are just really bad. Way too big and loud and in your face. I prefer simpler designs that actually look nice instead of a giant cartoony picture.
an example of something decent: http://shop.eternalrival.com/product/pew
this shirt is kinda hip/retro, but not offensively nerdy (imo) or garish, it does have a picture of a character, but the colors are muted enough that its not really screaming “ugly” to me.
these however: http://www.brokentier.com/collections/all/products/mash
http://www.brokentier.com/collections/all/products/cheap
are just hideous (imo), the designs are HUGE and look completely ridiculous. Walking down the street in one of these would immediately make you look like a huge nerd or a tool, and are about as fashionable as wearing a free shirt you got from attending a fun run at your company’s picnic day advertising your new adblock software.
now i know fashion is very opinion oriented, and I’ve seen tons of people wearing the “mash” shirt, but really, there is a market for people who like fighting games but prefer more toned-down designs.
edit: now that i’ve said all that, i’d kill for some badass pulp style weaponlord or eternal champions shirts - the more Frazetta the better.
Hey guys, I randomly saw people coming to my site from here, and I figured I’d spend some time to read your comments and criticism. Trust me, I want to make the clothing 1000000x better than it is, and I am my harshest critic. If you ever want to tell me how much you love / hate the brand, throw me an e-mail at support (at) brokentier . com
You’re dealing with the difference between fitted and regular garments. Cheaper T-Shirt companies such as Gildan, Anvil, Hanes and Alstyle use the regular fitting, which is a much boxier cut. American Apparel, Next Level, and other higher quality companies use the fitted model. I know myself, Meatbun, Kineda and Triumvir use American Apparel due to the higher quality, more color choices and a variety of other reason. On the downside, every t-shirt manufacterer out there is incredibly inconsistent with sizing. I’ve had customers return shirts that were shorter on one side than the other for no real reason. I’ve had hoodies that were different shades of black (warm black vs. cold black). You’ll always have bad eggs in the bunch when you’re dealing with bulk manufacturing.
Not going to lie, my goal at BROKENTIER isn’t to shove characters on shirts. It’s to make some cool stuff that you can wear to events and show your support for the scene. If I get an idea worth exploring (i.e; a Maneki Neko holding an arcade token), I’ll put a character into it if it fits. I really, really hate putting characters on shirts other than that. And hey, I’m always down to hear my stuff sucks. Just makes me want to make it 10x better.
Addressed the character selection problem above. Trust me, I want to make a legit female line. The cost for researching it, printing samples, resizing the art, and actually making it a reality is rough for a small business like mine. But I’ll do my best to make some female cut shirts that will make you and others happy in the Fall line.
The celebrity shirts used to cost around $28 a piece, but after doing some Good Ass Math© I realized I could keep them the same as the other shirts, and still give a huge percentage to the guys who help me make this a reality.
I feel you. The bright and colorful designs are definitely overwhelming and way too loud most of the time. I used to stock mostly dark, simplistic color schemes in the store, but people complained about the lack of color. I went full force with the color, and get way less complaints … so, we’ll see if I can’t reach a happy medium or make a couple versions of each shirt.
As much as I like fighting games, gaming is not the social norm and I will not wear something that blatantly label myself as such in public. What the shirts need is subtlety. The Brokentier blazblue fraternity and tiger shot shirts has such quality–a fighting game player will instantly recognize the (in) joke and a everyone else will just see it as a normal shirt with a cool logo. Most fighting game shirts are OK to wear to tournaments or community related events etc, but not for everyday.
heh, im glad you read that actually, because i ALMOST like several of the brokentier shirts, and would love to buy from you guys in the future.
so two things then: 1. you have to pick something and print it in a girlie tee. my wife was ready to drop some cash at evo on merchandise, but not a single booth had any girls shirts, and she is way too small to wear a guys shirt and not have it look silly. (and girlie doesnt mean just pink, my wifes favorite characters are oni and fei long… yeah i don’t get it either but whatever she loves bruce lee)
and 2: more subtle designs, its not just the colors, its the SIZE of the designs, they cover the whole front of the shirt! Maybe this is just because I typically wear clothes without any print on them usually, but I am totally turned off by a giant garish image plastered over a whole shirt. the cross counter shirt with just the logo and little wings is a big step in the right direction. I personally dont like THAT shirt (i dont watch cross counter), but the size and “pop” of the image is much more understated, and is something you could wear in public without feeling embarrassed to be a gamer.
Thanks!
1: Yup, I want to make a legit girly line, that isn’t just pink. I’ll be doing my best to unveil this with the rest of the Fall goodies.
2: Before this thread was even posted, I’ve been working hard to create two types of shirts for fall; really sleek and subtle (working with a few people in the community to create something more grown up and less crazy), and keeping the wild colorful all-over-print style that people love. I hope that it will make believers out of some of the people in this thread, but even if it doesn’t I feel it’s a step in the right direction.
Thanks again for your feedback, Entrerix.
Am I the only one who wants MAXIMUM pants?
Hey no problem, I’m stoked to see what you come up with!
How the hell are the eternal rival guys just outright using the official sprites from Capcom games on their shirts?
Are they actually paying for the licensing rights to do that?
I think some of you are hating a little too hard as well, but that’s just me.
Hey Paul, any ideas / tips on someone like myself who just wants to put out some shirts but not really make a business out of it?
The easy answer is: they haven’t been caught. Licensing is 5 figures.
Sure thing, go check out a local silkscreen shop and ask their max silkscreen print size. Make a graphic at 300DPI+ at that size, and give it to them. Boom! Easy as pie.
We need way more variety in apparel.
I like Ryu as much as the next guy, but where the fuck are my Rolento T-shirts?
