What do you like and dislike about the current lines of apparel aimed at the fighting game community?
I’ve been kicking around the idea of creating some gamer based apparel for a while but recent events have made it much more likely to actually go down so i’m looking for some insight on what people want.
Honestly, prices can be really high. And the inconsistency of 3XL shirts annoys me (I love American Apparel shirts, but their 2X runs small on me, compared to other 2X’s). No real complaint about the content of the shirts out there. Price is the big reason why I haven’t bought any shirts yet.
There’s also a severe lack of T. Hawk love, but I can forgive that.
Basically any shirt that comes out will cost ungodly amounts to ship to the UK. I really wanted one of those Triumvir SF2 shirts but it would have ended up costing about 40 quid ($60) getting it posted here.
The prices piss me off. No way I’m going to $30+ (USD) on a T-Shirt, not worth it.
The character selection is somewhat lacking. I want a Q shirt, but I doubt they’ll ever make one.
The designs of BrokenTier’s shirts remind me a lot of those TapOut, Skull, Twisty line, douchebag shirts, so just looking at their site hurts (IMO). The Yipes collection is real hot though and I’m hoping to save up enough to get a Team Spooky T-Shirt to represent here in the NorCal.
Also, no one ever seems to carry 2X. “Small or GTFO” -_________-
As DanDan mentioned, prices and limited character selection are pretty bothersome.
Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li are great and all, but I’d love to see some Makoto, Q, Elena, etc. as well. Get kinda tired of seeing the same characters over and over again. I guess most companies figure if they go with the more iconic characters, they’ll get guaranteed sales, so I can’t really blame them for wanting to make a good profit. But still, it’s nice to think outside the box.
At about $30+ for a single shirt, the thought of buying one is not so attractive; especially in this economy.
The lack of choice for female gamers also sucks. Some places do carry these shirts in women’s sizes, but not all of them do. Also, I see a lot of design changes in shirts sized for women. For example, say there’s a black Makoto shirt I want but it’s only in men’s sizes. I head over to the women’s section of the store and find the same Makoto graphic, but with an awful bright yellow color or pink colored shirt instead when I wanted the black one. It may seem like I’m being kinda picky, but it really is troubling for some.
I’ve noticed that, too. Granted, I have no reason to buy a women’s shirt, but it doesn’t make sense to me to have so few things in women’s sizes. I’m sure women’s shirts sell much less than men’s, but honestly, is it that hard? Maybe it is, since I’m not in the shirt business. Hopefully someone can enlighten me.
I like the IDEA of fighting game-related apparel, but none of the designs I’ve seen thus far have appealed to me at all. So I think there’s definitely room for someone to come in and market some decent designs
I’ve seen people on stream who are wearing regular T-shirts w/ Game art on them. I think at CEO I saw some dude with Bengus MVC3 art on a black Tee. Totally doesn’t look official, but I’m thinking of going that route since most of these apparel stores don’t carry my favorite characters/ price is a bit much. I’m not sure if a custom Tee is more expensive than a shirt bought from Triumvir, BrokenTier, Capcom’s Zazzle etc. Must do some research.
i dont feel the need to walk around with fighting game shit on my chest and alienate myself from the normal world in the process just because i like fighting games
Ok, that’s fine and dandy. YOU don’t HAVE to buy these T-Shirts. I for one like wearing these Tee’s. Not to the point where I have a FG shirt for every day of the week, but once a week or shirt rotations throughout the month. Nerd Swag
I don’t think wearing apparel with your favorite fighting games, bands, etc. is abnormal. In fact, it’s anything but. I wasn’t aware that having a passion for fighting games calls for a witch hunt o_O
They’re expensive, not very creative and ugly. For instance aside from the SRK Logo shirts I don’t see why anyone would want to wear any of the Kineda store shirts. A lot of them are just…yeah. Not very appealing.
Same when Triumvir first came out with their Street Fighter line. There were maybe 1 or 2 shirts that were really cool, but I still didn’t see myself wearing them. And no fucking way would I ever pay 40+ for a fighting game shirt that I’d wear maybe twice a year.
Broken Tier has some cool stuff (I really like the World Warrior Messenger Bag) but again, nothing I would wear. I just don’t see the clothing appealing or see myself wearing them.
This. Its like people wearing music shirts or sports shirts/jerseys. You’re just showing that you’re a fan. That being said, some of the fighting game shirts out there are kinda…bleh…but the same could be said for many other shirts for many other things.
Prices are mostly depending on the store/site selling them, i havent seen any that go over 30$… usually they range between 20 to 25, with very rare stuff going over that (eg: the Yipesxbrokentier lineup)
i usually try to support any sort of site/store that sells fighting game apparel coz hopefully if theyre making enough profit theyll start using different designs that arent based on the classic characters/games.
eternal Rival and brokentier are starting to do that recently, you’ll see stuff like Dr.Doom Tees and Felicia shirts if you go to their sites so its definitely expanding to somewhat “risky” designs now.
the prices are somewhat high compared to other stuff but its understandable seeing as a market isnt as a big for this kind of stuff, hopefully we’ll see more stuff in the 15$ price range in the near future coz FGs are becoming mainstream now and the market for it is getting bigger.
In my experience. Most people I know who wear gaming t-shirts just do it to solidify that they’re a “gamer” They think the appearance has to match the hobby which is pretty stupid imo.
Plus, as I mentioned earlier most gaming related shirts are really ugly, obnoxious, not funny…etc. Obnoxious can also be replaced with ridiculous or childish (especially Nintendo swag)
on topic: I will wear FG shirts *IF *the design pops for me, just like any other type of clothing. If it’s ugly, I ain’t wearing it. If it looks good, and represents something I like, why the hell not?
These is two of the biggest things I’m looking at.
I work in the apparel industry so I can answer the female shirts question pretty easily since it comes up all of the time and its really the same as the character selection issue. It basically comes down to price being lower with higher quantity, but when you go with higher quantity you run the risk of selling you inventory much slower or not at all. As much as anyone in here loves Q almost no one would actually say a Q shirt would sell better than a Ryu shirt.
I’m still trying to figure out what to do on this though, for example my favorite design so far would be much better as a female shirt, but I have no idea how it would sell. I also designed an AH3 shirt, but that one is in limbo too.
btw while black is available in just about everything, most female shirts aren’t available in the same dark colors that mens shirts are available in even when they’re made by the same company.
I think bigger sizes should be available, but most shirt manufacturers have a significant jump in price for sizes over XL L so there would be a higher charge for them most likely.
Price is probably going to be the biggest factor on if I pull the trigger on this so I’m still looking into all angle on this to see where my final price point would end up.
Any opinions on non T shirt items? Bags and hoodies are currently on top of my list.
How much would you realistically pay for either?
