The reason why stuff from the 16 bit era tends to be better is that the synthesizers were less advanced back then. You had to have a good composition otherwise it just sounded like a bunch of noise.
Now-a-days, you can pretty much record some random crap and it’ll sound ok.

And I FINALLY found a place to download KOF’s Song Of Fighters 2!! I’ve been looking for this song for 5 years. Damn, it’s cheerful as hell. Voice actors sing their verse, and sometimes tack on a phrase from their character’s voice samples(ie benimaru: Kare na posu kimetara…SANK you). Sweet.
I just downloaded some of the tracks for ex1 off of galbadia hotel recently. That music is really good, I forgot how insanely good it was. By far my favorite track is amusmentive crime, it’s just such a cool name for that track. But also it sounds really awesome, and on top of the fact that skullomania was my favorite character from first ex. After that I don’t know which tracks are 2nd favorite etc… There’s too many good tracks to choose between just one.

-Third Strike
-Tekken 3, all about the Jin, Hwoarang and Law themes. The original Tekken had some decent cheese as well. Dark Resurrection takes the cake for best Tekken soundtrack though, compliments the overall game aesthetic well.
-Virtua Fighter 2, again cheesy as all hell but also aweshum to teh m4x!!1 Outside of no.2 Virtua Fighter music can be grating though.
-Waku Waku 7 had a few cool tracks here and there. There was this great harmonica one on the old S&M ranger type guy’s stage. On the other hand some of it was really irritating, mixed bag.
-Samurai Showdown 4 and Kof 98 on Neo-Geo CD. Hell, most samurai showdown/ kof music is pretty decent.
-MVC2 gets some kind of award for having the most jarring soundtrack. Lounge jazz and 52 hit combos…who would have thought. The song on the raft stage really works for some god only knows reason.
-Capcom vs SNK had a great soundtrack, and much better presentation overall than cvs2 imo. Though the track that plays on the giant beer drinking robot stage is hilarious. Unintelligible rap ftw.
-Guilty Gear music in general…except the first one. Even that has it’s charms (Axl, Potemkin theme). The vocal albums all sound really nasty to me, literally can’t stand any more than 2 seconds of them at a time.
-Taki’s stage in soul calibur 1/3, as well as the song in the intro to Soul Edge. Soul Edge had some other nice tunes…the raft one in particular. What is it with raft stages?
And oh yeah, <3 Yuzo Koshiro. Shinobi/ sor soundtracks were great, though as someone else said can understand why the sor 3 one is somewhat less loved. The track that plays on the samurai boss is just nuts…and in a good or a bad way I’m not really sure.
