Fighting game music

Street Fighter 2
SF3:3S
Battle Arena Toshinden 1/2
DOA2:U
MVC2

I LOVE the mode select music. That guitar is too good…and I actually LIKE Take You For a Ride…but only for less than 12 repetitions.

I like some of the songs. The stage select, the “Swing Your Body” and many others. I also like 3rd Strikes rap on the Stage Select screen. “It’s on now, survival make your first pick.”

I consider Castlevania SotN and DMC 3 as sigle player fighting game. and they both got awesome sound tracks.
so, yes.

did they actually release the hnk ost?

Nobody Remembers Street Fighter Ex Beastly Soundtrack???

Admittedly I’ve played very little GG. It’s something I’ve been meaning to get into, but time is short. Considering the whole thing is based on one giant rock-music metaphor, it ought to be good.

Secret of Mana on SNES. I remember watching the opening sequence for the first time and my jaw hit the floor. That was a high point in gaming music.

If you get a chance to listen to this on real hardware, do it. SNES emulators can’t 100% emulate the low-pass analogue filters on the SNES hardware, and it just doesn’t sound right.

I’ll probably get flamed for this, but I hate rap/hip-hop. Most of the 3S soundtrack just makes me want to put my head through a wall. Hence why the only tunes on it that I like are the ones that are a different style.

I found SoR3 to be one of his worse works, personally. It felt like either he was experimenting with more hardcore stuff (as you mentioned), or he just got lazy/rushed and didn’t put any effort in at all. Considering the entire game was pretty shit compared to the first two incarnations, I’m going with the “rushed” theory.

MvC1(surprised nobody has said this one yet, unless I missed it)
Guilty Gear
SFII
3s(at first I hated it, then I grew to love it)
Tekken 5
Soul Calibur

Street Fighter II

… And just about all variations thereof, including the themes for the “new challengers” in the Super games. Well, all variations except for the remixes in Anniversary Edition, which are atrocious. I’d rather listen to a kazoo rendition of the Ryu theme.

Marvel Vs. Capcom

Lots of classic Capcom tunes, dolled up in the latest audio finery. Strider’s theme in particular is a trip down memory lane.

Soul Edge

No, not Soul Calibur. Soul EDGE. The old farts might remember the awesome tunes from this game.

Guilty Gear (all)
Tekken 5/DR
Various KOF
Marvel vs. Capcom
Let’s throw in SSBM for good measure, if it counts.

For whole soundtracks at least… Plenty of good stuff here and there, though.

Guilty Gear itself wins for “Meet Again”. Best boss theme ever.

The 16 bit area was a VERY HIGH point in video game music. Most SNES/Genesis games I play have amazing soundtracks. Nowadays, the music isn’t as good, but there are still amazing tracks here and there.

I have a funny feeling these days it’s more about the artist than the music.

It’s way more marketable to just get some trendy band signed up and have their latest tracks attached to your game than it is to compose music especially for the game. Look at the god awful “sountracks” attached to games like the Burnout series, and many other driving games these days.

Of course, I’m generalising pretty grossly here. There are still notable exceptions in modern gaming where music is written for the game and in the theme of the game and done very well. But the percentages are getting less than they were before the days of streaming CD/DVD music in games.

He wasn’t the only one working on the soundtrack for SoR3, IIRC, so that might be another contributing factor when comparing it to the music of the first two games.

Take You For a Ride

Take You For a Ride

Take You For a Ride

Take You For a Ride

I used to like MvC2 but seriously my ears could only take that shit for so long, Take You For a Ride, JERUS.

I like the tekken soundtracks mostly TAG, the Orge track I like that.

Guitly Gear is rock so if you like rock you should like it.

I also like the VF4 EVO soundtrack some great beats, mix of dance and rock.

Of course I like “Kiss Geese Once More” Aka “Kissed By Geese”, great track I think it suits him well.

You’re right, Koshiro shared his duties with Motohiro Kawashima for that game. The tracks that they each composed separatly blend quite well though, so I don’t know if Kawashima “influenced” Koshiro in getting him to experiment a little more than in SoR and SoR2. From a Koshiro interview: “SOR1’s style is like house music, and SOR2’s one is like hard-core techno. As both SOR covered many kind of dance musics, I figured out a new composing formula for SOR3, so called ‘Automated Composing System’ to create fast-beat techno like jungle.”

I love SoR3’s music personally, but I can understand why it’s less liked than the first 2 games’ soundtracks.

what is thie sor game you are talkin about?

The Streets of Rage (SOR) series. That and the Revenge of Shinobi soundtrack were some of his best for the Genesis!

i only played streets of rage 2…id say that the music defintely went wit the game…the screams of the characters once you beat them were pretty funny…kinda like classic SF2 when you beat them

Tekken 2: best soundtrack in the series.
