Fighters Console of Choice

PC… all consoles this gen = terrible

Playstation 3 because I know the chances of it breaking on me are slim. That and HRAP3.

Really depends on how the library will evolve. PS3 is region free, so that’s a definite plus.

PS3, im waiting for BB, and as Kitsune707 said is region free, still i have both of them :wgrin:

There’s no clear superiority of one console over the other yet, and I wish there was. Everything is still so up in the air. I pretty well only ever play fighting games nowadays too, and I’ve been holding off on buying a next-gen system just to see if things swing in one direction or the other. A few thoughts on the matter…

  • It’s all about the online play now. Arcades are dead: any last bastions are wonderful, bittersweet survivors. I hate it too but that’s the way it is. The console you should buy is the one you want to use to play next-gen fighters online.

  • Short of custom sticks and mods, it’s almost guaranteed that there will be NO multi-system controllers this generation. Too bad. I’ll mention that there are no good adapters for 360 but there are a few excellent PS2-to-PS3 converters. Also note that controllers for either system will work on a PC.

  • Backwards compatibility for fighting games is terrible enough on both consoles that it’s not a factor that should affect this topic at all. For old games, you’re wayyy better off on PC (GGPO or 2DF) than a console anyway.

  • How laggy a fighting game is depends wayyy more on the players’ connections and the particular title’s netcode than whether or not it’s being played on XBL vs. PSN.

  • Both consoles just dropped in price. Hooh! They also both have their fair share of pure dumb-ass crap, especially bullshit-poor layout/navigation, and painfully annoying strings of prompts when you’re trying to do something really really basic. The grass is not greener: don’t let one system’s niggles turn you off because the exact same junk is over the fence too.

  • XBL lives up to its hype. It costs to use, but not much relative to the prices and costs of gaming stuff in general. It’s put together in a way that really fosters and reflects the feeling of one big community.

  • PSN is not nearly as bad as everyone says it is. It’s free. Fewer people use voice chat. It has a smaller player-base. It has less “neat” stuff, and it lacks the organization and function of a cohesive, whole community. The games still search well and play fine, though!

  • SF4 will be on both (and PC). SFHD should be the same on both. SC4 is the same on both, if you’re into that.

  • 360’s apparently don’t break down anymore. They have the (incomparably) better version of VF5. DOA4 is stale piss. I hear UMK3 has a tiny scene. The upcoming SC1 port won’t have online play. I think PC is better the other XBLA fighters right now, but we’ll have to wait and see. Battle Fantasia may only see a 360 release for North America, but I don’t know if anyone cares about it.

  • PS3’s have T5DR right now and nothing else. VF5 is a revision old and has no online play. PS3 games are region-free, so you can import and play anything that only gets a Japanese release. Nearly all new (Japanese) fighting games will probably see a PS3 release over there. Apparently Tekken 6 will be PS3-only.

  • Console exclusivity for a given title is suuuch a weak and shaky thing now. There are no forever-promises and so many unannounced/undecided titles along the way. BlazBlue is still an unknown. I know nothing about Arcana Heart 2 or the new Melty Blood. I don’t even know of VF5R will get a console port.

  • People are forecasting a Wii-exclusive port of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Aaaawrrhh, this is MADDENING!!

The whole thing makes me feel frustrated and impatient. Pretty spoiled and bratty, hey? Sometimes I just wish I was a Smash player so I could just be done with this shit; life would be so simple!

Actually we have Battle Fantasia too (well MK2 as well if you count that). In the future there will probably be other Japanese only fighting games, or just games released in Japan first where you don’t feel like waiting 2-3 months to play it. Region free is nice in that aspect. DS makes a good point if you are a tourney traveler as well.

I prefer PS3, but you should be good either way for SF:HD and SF4, as long as you don’t RROD or buy a Wii. If you love movies though, Blu-ray FTW.

I’ve gone through 3 360’s so far, but that’s where the games are at right now. SamSho II, Fatal Fury, and Battle Fantasia look like they’re 360 exclusives. Soul Calibur IV, Blazblue, SFIV, ST HD remix, and KoF XII are all cross platform. I love my PS3, but there isn’t any choice at all. 360 all the way.

If you’re just playing fighting games, and don’t care about Bluray or anything else, get a 360 and a nice custom stick. the PS3 is a great console, but it still needs to expand it’s library if it hopes to compete fighting game-wise this gen.

(…Of course, if you’re a Tekken guy, that’s a whole different story…)

so not true.

I have Battle Fantasia now on my PS3 and play it online. You can’t even get it for an American 360 yet, so you are terribly wrong on that exclusive. I also believe Blazblue is only announced for PS3 thus far, unless something has changed recently.

Not hating, just trying to clean up your falsities.

360>ps3.

Actually, there hasn’t been any plans for a console release yet.

deadfrog’s post is pretty spot on, though.

You are probably right, I haven’t been following it at all. I just remember months ago in the Famitsu where it was listed as for the PS3 console.

Sorry chief, I should have clarified that the US release is 360 only(it comes out Wednesday, actually). My mistake.

Apologies!

The 360 is definately the way to go. Sales are jumping up in Japan due to recent JRPGs. 360 actually outsold the PS3 last month when Tales of Vesperia came out. That’s a statement on its own. Right now, its selling almost as much as PS3. Just my 2 cents. I think that the 360 will [in the end] come out on top.

Well I went PS3 loving it so far.

There aren’t many current-gen fighters I care about, and the one(s) that do are for both systems anyway (SFIV).

Not to beat a dead horse but I dusted off my Dreamcast and have been playing that nonstop. Haven’t fired up the PS3 since beating MGS4.

I have both. I picked PS3 just out of future speculation. I can use my Saturn USB pad, my custom controllers, or whatever controller I want to with the PS3. You know how hard it is to hack an xbox 360 controller for a JLF joystick?

fuck it, PS3 is my choice. I’ll probably play online on the 360 though.

If your all about Fighting Games go for the PS3 and STAY AWAY FROM THE 360.

Don’t get me wrong, I <3 My 360 Elite But my 360 Controller just= SHIT for fighting games. the 360 is an FPS console and a FEW RPG games. Other than that not much on the 360. I hate the PS3 personally,

but again for fighting games. PS3 > 360

Smashers have found a way to hack Brawl to remove tripping. Now unhappy Smashers want to find ways to increase hit stun and generally change things so that Brawl would be the game they wish it was. Meanwhile there is this great big push to go back to Melee but half the scene already doesn’t play it anymore. Smashers lives are anything but simple.

I pretty much agree with everything you said by the way regarding console vs console, but there is an extra factor for me:

I’m Aussie, so region free games means much more to me. PAL release schedules suck and some games don’t make it out here at all. Our only version of Third Strike was released on Dreamcast, and our only version of Accent Core was on the Wii. Thanks guys!

Buy either one I say. I think we could all assume here that 360’s online base will be stronger because more people in general play 360 games online, but that doesn’t take anything away from the PS3. PS3 has a region free feature so that’s a big plus for it, but IMO not enough to put it ahead. Not gonna lie though, the PS3 seems more lenient when it comes to features and controllers.

Honestly, you could buy a HRAP3 for PS3, and mod it so that it works for both, so in tournaments you don’t have to worry about anything. That alone makes both viable, and a console argument is pointless.

They both have their ups and downs, and it just comes down to subjectivity, and circumstances, like Zanken for example, or me. I have a 360 because all of my friends have it.
