same emulator and netcode. chat client is pyqtggpo.
server, however, is different; and depending on how it compares to the official ggpo.net server, it could coordinate games better during peak hours. i think the p2p aspect (i.e., during gameplay) is the same. would be nice for @pof to verify
Hey guys… just jumping in quick to clarify a few things:
FightCade server is different from GGPO’s server, although it uses almost exactly the same protocol (with a few minor modifications I’ve added to make fighcade’s experience a bit better). The server is open source and available here.
FightCade client is a fork of pyqtggpo, although it might seem it is exactly pyqtggpo, it has a ton of things modified in the guts. You can compare my changes with the last commit from papasi here. At the moment of writing this FightCade’s client has changed 42 files and is 119 commits ahead from the original pyqtggpo.
At the moment FigtCade emulator is exactly the same as GGPO emulator (same netcode, same FBA version). Any differences you notice between them are placebo. The only change is that FightCade wraps the emulator executable to do UDP hole punching before starting a match, so you don’t need to forward ports on your router in most cases. If for some reason hole punching fails and the wrapper detects it can’t do NAT traversal, then it falls back to using open ports (same as GGPO).
I don’t know man. Maybe the netcode bit was just louis being funny again. But maybe the server change is enough to make a difference. I say this not from some technical point of view but because it had a noticeable decline in input drops, meaning none and they were even on time, and it doesn’t roll back. I’m not saying it isn’t ggpo, it is, but there is something different about it. Even the commentator in the background, that guy that says things like “let’s go” after you mess up a parry or something, doesn’t pop on every 3 seconds and he doesn’t say stupid shit that doesn’t fit the situation.
It’s funny that no one has ever acknowledged hearing that commentator. It’s probably the one thing I think 3s could do without. Useless unless you can play with someone that is on point with all of their parries.
@POF I have to politely disagree. FightCade and GGPO do feel different. I can parry and react to things much more on FightCade than GGPO. I’ve also had fewer dropped inputs.
Ha yeah, I read your signature like 2 seconds after I made that post. I feel sorry for this pof guy. I’m glad he’s kind this stuff up and running and am tweaking my set-up to play on it myself, but having Alexisdabomb as an avocate it’ll do more harm than good.
I think Alex even dropped 2 spots on the tier list as a direct result of Alexisdabomb playing him.
I played I think 30 matches yesterday on fightcade because ggpo was down. I left fightcade with my arms sore lol ( I’m playing online with a homemade Sanwa arcade stick) Never felt this on ggpo. A lot of moves heavy to perform. At a first impression I thought it was only in my side but other players was complaining about that as well.
Animation and pixelization was so strange at first, I felt a few missing frames and just after tweaking some video settings I had better results but not 1:1 with GGPO
Of course the client is better than GGPO client. A lot of rooms for new games = no more need to messing with unsupported games and lose countless minutes trying to explain someone how to setup a unsupported game, The interface is slick although I miss a big challenge button lol. ahh and the replay feature needs no comments, it’s the best feature there.
I mean, if it’s using the same exact net-code and emulation, whatever, that’s fine. The fact that it’s actively being worked on and is open source makes this a step above GGPO.
Ponder hasn’t touched that thing in like 7 years.
I don’t know much about emulation, but I don’t think there’s much room for improvement with CPS3 games, right? o.O
I’m just assuming because we haven’t seen any progression in emulation.
There’s probably a lot that could be done, but little crossover between people with the necessary programming expertise and people that play one of the 4(?) CPS3 games enough to care.
Do you have to have really old-ass versions of the roms to get this to work? I can’t seem to get the 3s roms I have to work (I have the sfiii3n and sfiii3an ones)
I believe it’s the same version as GGPO uses. so not saying that anyone should ever torrent anything, but if they were to look up “ggpo torrent” they would probably find the roms they need.
Got it working. It’s not bad, definitely not better than 3SO yet but with some work I could see this being really good. It would be nice to have a good PC alternative once 3SO starts getting long in the tooth.
That and I gotta say, I really like all the non-filtered/non-HD graphical bits in 3S. It’s nice to see those again. xD
Someone in the lobby linked to the right ROM and finally got it working after sitting around and not being able to accept challenges. I’ll mosey on over and try again fully equipped. Feels pretty good and captures well, though I don’t think I have any 3S vid projects in the brain factory atm.
