FGD Lounge: for general fighting game discussions that aren't thread worthy

And here’s where you’re pretty much completely wrong. Playing against the CPU is pretty much entirely worthless. Challenge modes are OK if they teach system mechanics, fundamentals or practical combos. GG Xrd did a good job with this (Skullgirls too for the most part, especially the fundamentals).

Fighting game players primarily care about the two player competitive aspect, time spent on story mode or quest modes are seen by many as superfluous and could be taking away resources from balance and optimization. Take story mode out completely and spend all that time an resources perfecting netcode.

Single player modes should be geared towards improving skills towards the multiplayer. Casuals and relatively few serious players give much of a damn about story mode. But the casuals move units, especially in NRS games. They buy early at full price, get their story jones on, get beat down, quit, and then buy the next game at full price. Lather rinse repeat.

As much as we don’t like it, casuals help fund the games we play, but really many of us could give a rats ass for single player outside training mode.

I wouldn’t go out to say that we don’t do the casual modes; but we definitely don’t make it the reason why we do or don’t buy a fighting game. The trials are pretty neat for getting acquainted with characters.

That M.O.M. mode has been utterly neglected. Its all shrugs.

Fighting games don’t express anything. The players do this. You want it to reach heights? Look at Yipes playing Magneto in MvC2, Valle in Alpha 2, Shooting D/Daigo/Otochun/Gian in ST, look at Ogawa do anything in guilty gear.

Players extracting every bit of juice out of the gameplay is the high of fighting games; not some shitty story mode.

Thoughts?

Smash is an entirely different scene that’s been crying for validation since they found out fighting game people created their own hype for their own enjoyment. They wanna be part of community events but they don’t really wanna be part of the community. They don’t play any of the games, they just want their game in there for the cool kid factor. Adding all of them creates a lot of issues for tournaments where there previously weren’t; but they also make tournaments hella money through venue fees so the actually FGC is gonna have to eat a dick to them.

The End.

Single player content in fighters tends to be pretty worthless, and if you spend a lot of time with it, it has a very high chance of making you a worse player then you probably already are

So what about Street Fighter Alpha 3? Or maybe a single player experience that helps you learn as you go?

@Pertho I’ll admit I was a bit heavy handed there. I spend more time in trial mode on needlessly convoluted combos that I should, but that’s at least partially due to the fact that it helps to understand the game engine better and maybe help develop better optimized combos (hello KOFXIII). Buts stand by single player modes as they stand are pretty much worthless. Playing arcade mode as it stands generates bad habits. If people want a valuable experience.
In my opinion if people want a worthwhile single player experience AI has to make a big leap, and apparently KI’s shadow mode is working towards that. I need to try it out when it comes to PC even though I’m not super drawn to it as a game. That team seems to be taking steps in the right direction
Edit: fuck posting from my phone.

That’s not what he wants. What he is proposing is all of the joy of a beat em up, but instead of one its a FIGHTING GAME!

You know all those medals that were handed out just for participating? Imagine a fighting game based on that concept. VS being secondary to “ZOMG EPIC STORYTELLING!”

Chess needs a campaign mode.

World Tour Mode was a fun distraction at best. A Novelty and nothing much more. It was also even more likely to make you a shit player then just normal arcade mode due to the modifiers that aren’t present in standard VS play.

I’ve been playing 3rd Strike recently, and I’ve been having trouble doing SA cancels with Ken, is there a timing to it? I can’t do it for the life of me. I can do regular specials cancels but SA cancels seem impossible, I have no idea where I’m going wrong. I used to have this issue when I played it on my old ass console, Dreamcast or something? I really wish I could do it.

I’d go to the 3rd Strike section but it seems kinda…dead.

So is Wakeup SRK done? I’ve been out of the loop for a while.

Yessir. Keits has a career that is fulfilling and Ski is too busy growing his dreads.

I’m gonna be in Niagara for the next two days, apparently. Is there a scene there for FG’s that’ll be meeting up while I’m there?

Trying to remember a fighting game. I don’t remember much about it, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t Capcom or SNK or anyone major. I remember seeing this guy playing it at the arcade and kicking ass. This was after '96, when I was on holiday in Florida. I think it was a 3D fighter, or at least 2.5D. And one character I vaguely remember looked like Lord Zedd from Power Rangers. I don’t remember much more than that. There might have been a fire character too, like Cinder, but not of course. Can anyone put the pieces of the puzzle together?

Any fgc podcasts that you recommend? Love to hear about this. Basically a live version of srk

Try poking around here. It’s good as a general database for fighting games and characters.

@BurnYourEgo

Thanks man! Great resource, think I found my game man! It was, “Mace The Dark Age” for those curious.

Kinda feel like a new Puzzle Fighter with all popular Capcom characters would sell. It would probably become a pay to play phone game unfortunately

Anybody mess with Jingi Storm!? I played it the other day for the first time after seeing it in Hong Kong, and it’s not a bad game, just kind of feels like a rip off of VF, Tekken and some generic fighters.
