FGD Lounge: for general fighting game discussions that aren't thread worthy

Hey guys. Is there a larger version of this particular qcf+p graphic floating around anywhere?:

I need this on my body, but I will need a larger version of the image without loss in quality if at all possible. Google has forsaken me.

H-Help…

Fun facts, this is garbage, written by someone who hates the FGC and has enjoyed portraying us like we’re some 3rd world culture.

Totally written by someone who wanted to knock out a couple dozen pages for his thesis or whatnot.

Tier list for Fatal Fury 1’s Single Player:
Joe Higashi for Sliding Spam but also Awesome Thai Kickboxing Moves, Terry Bogard for simple to pull off Special Moves and Balance, Andy Bogard for Powerhouse Attacks.

Will they defeat Geese Howard in order to save The City of SouthTown? That will be up to us.

Oh wow, just brought that up earlier. And it’s the only gb cartridge I still haven’t lost(well i did lose it, but my mom randomly found it years later). When I was a kid I thought 641236 was the hardest command ever. Took me a good few hours to get it consistently on the D-Pad. Then I realized Fire Spirit was kind of a worthless move(in my hands, at least).

For those who don’t know, our very own @Sosage has been doing interviews for VentureBeat.

His latest one is with MKX lead designer John Edwards regarding character variation and balance.

Nice to see a developer acknowledge that variety does bring about with it tiers.

I played the shit out of next dimension way back before I knew what fighting games were.

It was pretty weird thinking about it now.

Air counters that would beat pretty much any anti-air so jumping was free.

But their was air grab and certain character had follow ups

Ah yes, there were t hose.

Had some cool supers too. Disable your opponents bar, give yourself different types of projectiles. I also liked how the Blob was actually unthrowable.

It felt unique.

Sadly, a super normal price for academic books (especially those published by a big academic publisher like Routledge). The worst part is that the author is never going to receive any royalties for it either. But high quality books are really really expensive to make when the print run is really really low (1000 or less, which is probably the case for this book).

Yeah, those books then become super rare and make for hilarious citations.

I was gone for a week and got help with things and cooled down. I found this book, EVERYONE needs to read it. No matter what theyre into. This really reinforces UltraChenTV’s episodes helping new players out.

You know what, Im not afraid to say this! History backs me up on it 10 fold! (or X fold I should say, or XX I guess)

You guys who think MKX is gonna be an awesome game, just freakin wait for the block infinite 2.0’s get discovered, or theres other crap thatll make the game unplayable at a serious level. I cant wait to hear Tom Brady complain about all of it! Keits and Ski should restart Wake Up SRK in anticipation for the sequel to this lovely chaotic gem to happen! The 2 versions of characters is only gonna be TROUBLE! They couldnt make solid single versions of characters in MK9! Then Injustice came out and you couldnt freakin move cause NRS discovered zoning and fell in love with it too damn much! Seriously, this is the company that gave birth to the freakin block button, it was all downhill even more from there on! The FGC Comedy thread is gonna be invaded by MKX vids as soon as its released, COUNT ON IT!

Anyone notice that Lobo from Injustice and Slayer from Guilty Gear both have the same walking animation?

Any inspiration or just coincidence?

This isn’t thread worthy but it was an interesting discussion to watch anyways.

Recently saw a little Twitter escapade between some players like PR Rog, Sanford, Wong, Arturo and some other big names in the US scene and the fact that they all hide tech from one another and that they “need to change the mentality of the community” and rear everyone towards helping each other out and being more unified like the Japanese community. Not a part of the US community myself as I’m from the EU, but honestly I probably know more about it than my own player wise.

The real thing that sparked my interest was how will anyone go about changing a mentality of an entire community that IMO has always been closed off and in some ways elitist. It’s a 1vs1 game, it’s hard to say “yeah sure I’ll share all of this tech I found” because it won’t work on people that know about it and see it coming, and people are going to want that advantage; especially now there’s big money on the line.

Interesting thought from the players, but I doubt anything will come from it.

Well I highly doubt every competitive player will just give out all their secrets because that would just be silly. Like you said there’s big money on the line and that surprise tech you’ve been working on could give you the edge. But I do agree that we do need to try to be more welcoming and unified in the sense that we become more eager in helping new players “git gud” and want to stick around.

A part of me interprets what they were saying as a unified effort by all of the “top players” to come together, share tech, and try and outdo Japan. The classic country vs. country scenario that might actually make players share some of their tech. If it were me, country has no meaning and the money is what matters, but that’s just me being hungry for those dollar bills. What surprised me was Sanford’s attitude towards it all, he’s humbled quite a lot as of recent and I respect him a lot for it.

And even in the scenario that the US’ top players came together and shared tech and coached each other on match-ups, I still doubt their ability to go and body players like Umehara, Momochi, Tokido, Sako and all of the other top players that country has to offer.

I actually think a country vs country rivalry would be awesome! Think of how such rivalries in other competitive events like Hockey with the Soviet National team against the Canadian national team back in the cold war era, or the rivalries in the world cup and the Olympics, etc helped elevate these sports in terms of popularity. I think so many casual gamers and people who aren’t even gamers would be interested if such a rivalry developed. Also I think if they were to work together they could possibly beat Japan’s best, but never body them. Those guys wouldn’t be the players they are if they could get bodied.

As the person who uploaded this video, and dissed MK a lot a few years ago, I think you are overreacting.

If you really want to be fair, silly fuckups happen all the time in development. Here’s one from Tekken 7:

What’s more important is that MK9’s success convinced their publisher, WB, that catering to competitive players too is also beneficial. With every new game they got more and more budget which means the publisher believes in them.

They have a DLC model with planned characters that are not even on the disc (Fujin etc.) and from the publisher’s side that is a good opportunity to shove in balance patches, because from a business perspective just patching and updating for balance is not worth the cost. (Think about ASW updates as well, they too are bonded with new characters.)

And in general I do not think character balance is a first priority in a fighting game. That is overall a small issue that can easily be tweaked. What’s really important is that the game itself is fun to play, so for example even if they achieve perfect character balance in SF4, that won’t matter to me because I don’t enjoy playing the actual game. MK9 even with its wacky qualities was more fun for me to play so at least we’re off to a good start.

SAY IT A LITTLE BIT LOUDER PEOPLE IN THE BACK CAN’T HEAR YOU.

Doesn’t a country vs. country kind of already exist in a way? It’s just kinda heavily in Japan’s favour at the minute and doesn’t resonate much hype, if there was a big even on that had a draw-in of “Japan vs. USA” I’m pretty sure people would be hype for it, but the result would be pretty easy to call in the end.

By the way, on another note now I’m bringing up USA vs. Japan, where the hell did Valle and Choi ever go? Like, seriously. Choi is still insanely naturally talented at these games, I love watching him play. If I had to compare USA and Japan player for player, the ability of Choi in footsies if he was sharp and trained up, would be my comparison to Umehara.

Because balance is overrated. What matters more is that the game is interesting and fun to play (see ST, 3rd Strike, MvC2).

IMO, we really shouldn’t be concerned much with that kind of stuff, since NRS can easily apply balance changes and hotfixes without having to do patches.

What people should be looking into more is the general direction that they seem to be bringing the game into. Early reports seem to indicate alot of Batgirl style 50/50 vortex/setplay situations so it seems that they’re moving the game in that direction.
