I have realized that for some reason fighting games never bring back characters for there next game in their series, ex. sf3s. Yes I do know 3s is near perfect but i dont like the roster. they should have maybe just kept all of the old characters, and followed up with new ones in addition. hell, sf4 is trying i know, but wheres dudley, makoto, yun, and so much more in sf4? is it something with money, because i thought that until i realized kof atleast adds on as much characters as possible, and last thing i heard they went bankrupt. and lets face it, fighting games with more character do well (most of the time.) ex. mvc2 but that might just be because its greatness and it will be forever, same goes with cvs2. But idk this is just my opinion/thoughts on this and I want to know what yours are.

It’s based on demand. KoF has a ton of characters… ok fine…
A3 had a ton, CvS2 had a ton, MvC2 has a ton… most don’t get used…
So Capcom knows they can’t be SNK. who cares? Big lists don’t mean shit if the game’s mechanics limit over half of them.

Huge rosters are for anime games and crossovers.
It bodes terribly for balance and game-breaking shenanigans when there are 50 characters. I’d rather a developer balance a dozen characters really well (thank you, virtua fighter) than have a roster as big as MvC2 where you might as well remove 3/4 of the cast for one reason or another.
Also, SF4 doesn’t have the SF3 characters because they’re not “iconic” enough to bring back those people who forgot SF existed after the super nintendo. Side note: I do miss Necro. =)

and yeah… SF3 characters are lame in general. Twelve? Q? Hugo? Alex?
Necro, Yang, Yun, and Ibuki are the only ones that have flare on their looks, and Necro and Dudley on their personality.
The bigger the roster the less likely the game will be very balanced. mvc2 is perfect example. I rather have a smaller cast if it means that everyone is playable than a large cast where only the top five characters are good.
Unless you are GG in which case in can have a large roster and be very well balanced.
I don’t think the roster sizes have anything to do with what’s wrong in the Marvel Vs. games
and I like to emphasize fun and variety over balance.
I mean that’s why I play games.
We can talk about how balanced VF5 is all day, but in the end for me at least I just don’t enjoy it as much as other games with a reputation for being unbalanced like KoF
So I like big rosters with a variety of character types.

SF4 doesn’t have SF3 characters because SF2 fans outnumber SF3 fans and Capcom wants to make money by appealing to nostalgia and possibly whatever they can get from the upcoming movie based on SF2 next year.
Roster sizes often depend on the time, system capabilities and designer preferences. To me the smallest a roster should be is 15-20 depending on how many characters play with a similar move set. Honestly, I usually only stick with a handful of characters anyway so its more along the lines of just wanting different playing styles when I fight the CPU or other people.

MvC2 is a good size roster for what their trying to do. marvel alone is maybe double the size of the roster and capcom is a big company that has alot of characters, so why not mix some of the best? just because MSP/MSS/Santhrax etc. are top tier teams doesnt mean everyone just uses those teams. so its better to give people choices and not go with the best characters right away.
SFIV is turning out to have a great roster, i personally just want ONE 3S character and thats enough
