I still like balance, but it isn’t the end all be all. And mostly, I like any post that recognizes VF as something less than perfection. Its boring to me personally. All the depth in the world and its no more fun to play or watch than golf.
I do think a game with a large roster can be balanced, its a matter of time investment on the task.
i prefer games with small rosters to be honest. every time i see one of those BLAH BLAH confirmed for console SF4! things i get a little inside, and i LIKE cammy and rose.
this is kinda getting offtopic (although its not like this threads original topic is really worth discussing anyways) but i think VF5 is a lot of fun to watch although not very fun to play for me. i think it has something to do with my level in the game not being so high, and something about the game being completely unfun until youre somewhat good at it but for some weird reason its not fun to learn either. in other games when im a noob i usually leave matches with thoughts like “wow i am bad at this game BUT i can get better if i did that anti air more and practiced that combo”. in VF5 its just like “wow im bad.”
this bugs the hell out of me because i cant really find anything blatantly wrong with the game. its like “the-best-game-that-youll-never-play-except-not-due-to-availability-or-aesthetic-reasons”. im kinda envious of the people who have been playing for a long time because they seem to be having a lot of fun with it.
who knows im probably talkin out of my ass its late im tired and im sorta just posting for the sake of posting
That’s still wishful thinking. Yes, delaying a game helps at times and it has been done, but that only works with the least taxing of games. Backbone took a gamble with HD Remix because it’s based on a game that’s been played for 14-years and has a relatively small number of characters, with no added system features. You’d think it was an easy task, except it’s been in development for more than a year now and they’re still not sure how the balance will be affected with the changes they made.
I can’t imagine anyone doing that with a 40+ roster for a brand new game, where funding for development is primarily focused on character design, gameplay design, the graphics engine, promotion and testing. You wouldn’t know how to re-balance it without ten plus years of hands-on player experience, and even so, any re-balancing efforts made are more likely to get thrown out the window over time with prolonged play. What you’re asking for is the equivalent of balancing a new Starcraft game with a total of 10 races. With so many variables, it’s not worth the wait.
I feel the OP on this topic, because I’m still mad/sad, that Andy Bogard gets no love in some of
the more recent SNK games. Ken & Ryu always seem to show up (except for CAP VS TAT),
why can’t both Terry AND Andy do this? Fark…
It’s interesting that you mention StarCraft, because they are taking their sweet ass time on that game. For example, it was announced (with already a lot of development) prior to any Red Alert 3 development, and that game’s already out and SC2 is still a long time away. It was also announced/shown half a year before the first Street Fighter IV teaser trailer. SFIV is out, and even the console version will be out before SC2.
Companies can take their time to balance games if they want to. For Capcom, a half a dozen or so loketests was enough. For StarCraft 2, I’m expecting a long beta. That’s how you balance things: thousands playing a game for months. It’s about the will to see you game perfect, something Capcom doesn’t have (or else the Beta for HD Remix would have been every character and would have lasted many weeks). It’s quite simple to take your time when you refuse to announce any time frame at all. StarCraft 2 has been “it’ll be done when it’s done” since May of 2007. All serious (tournaments with $ worthy) multiplayer competitive games should be like that.
—The following paragraph is ranting, ignore if you please:
I know this isn’t the SFIV forum, but that game can be used for great examples. I think it’s clear to all that the arcade version was rushed, and that’s mostly clear from the embarrassing effort with Akuma. His Super and Ultra are the same (slightly different properties… fuck that it’s the same) and this is the sequel to a game where he had 5 supers. If the arcade version was launching next year, would you expect that? Hell no. It’s the developers being forced to have the arcade game ready by June, and the consequence is that even in the unrushed console version it’ll be the same because they won’t balance anything. We (the console players) are stuck with a lame ass one Super Akuma so that the smaller audience (arcade players) is satisfied with one more character. Anyone who doesn’t think Akuma was rushed is wrong.
i’ll take a small roster of fresh, well-balanced characters rather than a legion of recycled characters. back in the day, one of the reasons why i gravitated towards arcade games like VF instead of SF2 is because i couldn’t stand the thought of playing against the umpteen opponent to pick ken/ryu. boring.
one of SF4’s selling points is that its sort of a throwback to the original SF2 to appeal to oldschool players/nostalgia/people who thought sf3 was wack.
i swear its like
make SF4 like SF2 with the OG world warriors: “wtf old and boring”
make SF4 like SF3 with almost completely new cast: “wtf not another 3s wheres bison/rog/claw/gief…”
yeah super uppercut bros get boring after a while but people eventually pick other stuff. i played zangief and chun (ok i beat arcade mode with her, close enough lololol) today against blanka, honda, rog, and bison
It’s not just about will, it’s about the budget. Capcom put too many characters in SFIV for prolonged testing after spending so much time and money on the models, the environments and the game system, not to mention distribution. As much as we all want to play another SF, this game is merely a test to see how strong a demand this series still has, unlike SC2. I doubt it’s going to sell any more than the next Resident Evil or Mega Man title. If it does, that’s great; there’s more hope for SFV. But I can’t see them delaying SFIV and spending a ridiculous sum on testing without knowing for sure they’ll break even. It’s a different game, with LOTS of different characters.
Besides, Blizzard has released patches for their games before. Try as you might, there’s always some flaw to be discovered anyway.
Yun and Yang are far more lame than Alex. I mean yun and yang weren’t nearly as interesting than Alex. I mean Yun and Yang are cool, but they are just Spunky teens who happen to know kung-fu and work at thier grandfathers resturaunt. Alex was a crazy viking looking dude from Brooklyn who powerbombs people whilst wearing WAR PAINT! Of all the cast of street fighter, few look more ready to fuck some shit up than Alex.
As for rosters, I personally like larger casts of relatively varied characters like in CvS2. Its not even about size of the cast really, but variation in characters. I mean the cast of SF4 is looking to be one of the best tet due to all the different play styles of the cast.
LOL, thanks man, I was about to say- Alex is lame, but not Necro? Fuck that. If SFIII came out four years earlier, we would’ve have heard kids at school screaming, “You can’t escape!” Probably more than “Get over here!”
My roommate and I still scream “You can’t escape!” every once in a while. Gameplay wise he’s my favourite fighting game character ever. He’s too lacking on quotes to even compare to Terry Bogard, however.
wtf? you did read on their looks, right? alex looks like the character they scrapped for final fight. yun and yang are a different approach in the sense that they’re both young, wear traditional chinese clothing, and just have a cool appearance overall. alex looks like a bum.
I prefer small roster sizes, because it’ll get me more focused on playing the game rather than deciding on a character to use. This is the reason i enjoy the VF series and SF3 more than the alpha games and most of the crossovers. (MVC is hella fun though, and again, it has a small [almost tiny compared to most games] roster)
games with large rosters… i like them, but i can’t take them seriously like i do other games
Last I checked, Bums don’t wear war paint and powerbomb people. Then again, I dont know a lot of bums personally. And while Yun and Yang offer a new spin on an old chliche, its still an old cliche. Alex was fresh, new, and he looked pissed.
