This really should have gone in the other thread, but whatevs.

DISCLAIMER: The easily-made-salty should stop reading right now.

I’m a huge fan of FF6. If I tried to tell a crowd of hardcore FF6 fans that even though I love it to death, it has tons of flaws, including a mediocre second half and various issues with its mechanics leading to a very broken game, they’d bury me in Thwomps crafted out of pure reality-warping defensiveness.

That’s basically me saying “yeah, gamers are the worst, and as a gamer myself I feel a little dirty being part of this socially ass-backwards group.”

Also, everyone angry at Phil Fish in this thread makes me eye roll. Let’s peruse Ben’s link in the OP and pull out some choice nuggets:

Yeah, he’s right. You’re going to pirate his game because you’re a defensive twat who needs everyone to validate your unadultered love for either a) Japanese games and/or 2) flowery language when speaking with others? You’re an idiot if you honestly think that.

Good that he got personal. More devs need to do that when obvious imbeciles demonstrate obvious imbecilery.

But hey, I do agree that he was unnecessarily rude. Would be nice if he apologized right? Right. Oh look he totally fucking did:

If you go to Fish’s Twitter, he’s totally owning this. A recent tweet was something like “what will I say next?” Good. May he never stop expressing himself, despite the haters.

And this goes for any dev dealing with gamer stupidity, on either side of the ocean. And to diffuse the very obvious rebuttal I know is coming and/or being thought of right now: no, that doesn’t mean anything a dev says is always right.

That’s my two cents.

Also Japanese games are terrible, and gamers are terrible people. Fish is dead on.

Or, in this case, by not dropping our dimes on their games. Since I don’t even know who he is or what games he has made or has coming out, added with the fact that I’m not flowing with bucks and that I would like to get my money’s worth out of a few other games that I have, I probably won’t buy his games. Am I an asshole for this? You won’t know until you come over…AND KISS THE BUTT!!

My feelings on the issue tho is that he’s being no better then the people he’s getting at. He said some shit, p[eople responded to his shit with some more shit and his reaction is to respond with even more shit. He’s being no better then the people he’s chastising. So some people said they are going to pirate your game, big fuckin deal. To encapsulate your entire audience in a sweeping comment due to the comments of a few is childish, immature and just as bad, if not worse then those getting at him which is the only reason I can’t get behind his response. It’s not very smart to shit on your entire audience because of a vocal minority.

It’s just not Specs.

First off, thank you for conceding that FFVI had its flaws. It’s my favorite FF game, but I will recognize that it has its problems (Evasion not working and Shadow’s dog disappearing, for starters. I know the first was fixed in the GBA port, can’t remember if the second was or not).

Regarding Mr. Fish putting his foot down, I think it’s necessary too. But there we’re much smarter ways to say it than “gamers are fucking terrible.” I’m not saying he had to sugarcoat his message, but others (including the game players themselves) would be more willing to listen to you if your response at least looked more than an tantrum. He keeps doing stuff like this, and it makes him look like a clown. Or a young boy.

Note: I’m not outraged. I just think it’s foolish of him to keep making inflammatory (possibly sensational) blanket statements.

If there are exceptions it isn’t truth. I sincerely doubt that the Japanese put out a significantly higher amount of shovelware compared to the West, or vice versa.

Way to miss the point, its how he handled himself. I’d would be mad even if a japanese person said the west games are shit in the same way he did it as that’s not professional. Either way its not like the west doesn’t have an equal amount of garbage, and its mainly been cranking out shooters as the only genre that’s considered good. Anyway this isn’t about east vs west or weather japan games are crap its about how he went about saying it especially in someone else’s face.

Dumbest post of this thread, I could just spin this the otherway around and say western games are terrible and then say they are exceptions. Its funny because we live in the west so we are going to be heavily biased on what games are better anyway. The last part of your post makes little sense as if there are exceptions, there’s no reason to even say the first part of this post.

Anyway both east and west does have an equal amount of garbage and i’ll name some.
East: the final fantasy series as of late, various otaku games and such and a good amount of rpg’s
West: Sports games, I don’t have to explain this as its the same damn game every year for 60 bucks. Various FPS/3PS and gta rip-offs and even the over-hyped mass effect series(that even plays like COD now).
Bascially a-lot of mainstream games in both countries are crap and gamers in general no matter what country are terrible people. That’s what to much gaming does to ya.

In retrospect this is fine on its own.

But I will say, perhaps some context on Fish’s line would have been better in the thread title. He said gamers were the worst after another line, in exasperation. Sort of like when I say “women are the worst” without actually condemning all women.

Anyway, its not so much that Japanese games are bad, its more, they haven’t really advanced in the last 5-10 years. The graphics get marginally better, but the design philosphy is kind of stuck in the old ways.

Well, sure, you can play the class you like, but you are still locked into the role of messiah. You still spend most of your time on dungeon clearing fetch quests, no matter how much you wish to role play a merchant blacksmith.Your DM would have to be a pretty big dick to make one guy Jesus and everybody else his follower.
Think about the orignal final fantasy, you have party with a warrior, a thief a mage, cleric, monk whatever. The turn based system was like an automated role of the die “warrior steps forward, swings his sword, hit…15 damage to ice wolf. cleric steps forward…miss…” Hell, you had to sleep to restore magic because it was like that whole “once per day” thing.Of course, a lot of that has gone out the window…
Battles in ES involve either running up and slugging it out with some monster, pausing briefly to chug some potions, or running backwards shooting arrows or magic, with the occasional chugging of potions.

I will say this, this gen of gamers are so bad they let Microsoft into the video game console business. Like…Wow. No idea how anybody saw what does fuckers did to the OS market and thought “Hey, it’d be great if they could do that to video gaming too.”
