No clue.
Probably timing issues. If the macro is simply: cr.LK> cr.LK> cr.LP> Rekka with a 1-frame link for each normal, then he would still have to time the button press after EX CW to initiate the macro.
With this in mind, if he mistimes the button press to initiate the macro and the opponent blocks, Fei will try to link the three normals (which can be interrupted since they’re not rapid-fire canceled), and finish off all three Rekkas. This would give the opponent 3 chances to interrupt the normals, followed by a huge punishment window after the 3rd Rekka.
With cr.HK, it’s only 1 chance to interrupt, and a smaller punishment window (though it’s still freaking huge).
agreed. valid point. less flame, more vids is good for all.
see below
leet double post
couple casual vids of me vs antwan ortiz. dude got third at the gamestop nationals, and second at evo midwest, where he lost to mike ross, and marn, respectively. he switched his main to gouken cuz “theres too many balrogs”, aparently

was trying really hard toget my tenshins out. every time you see me jump in and go stand jab, im trying, except for the time i jumped in and hit stand jab 2x and cr jab 2x. i was suprised that the jump in hit that time. theres also some poorly spaced jump in rh where i didnt think i was going to get over his head, and i was going for tenshin anyway. we played a bunch, where i won the first 3, we traded a bunch, and he won the last 4. my camera man didnt get the rest tho
I think you can punish a blocked Demon Flip Kick with a Flame Kick. I do it consistently; not sure if that’s due to the opponent always trying to follow up with an attack after, or if there is actually a 5+ frame punishment window. I think the latter might be true though, so you might want to try that.
Your EX CWs in the first vid came from waaay too far to be effective, especially since they weren’t used to counter fireballs (you used them to get in close, though the tendency was to whiff the first two hits and get Focus’d on the third hit). At that range, you might as well walk/jump/dash forward a little first. Gouken’s fireballs come out fast, but with the proper spacing, you should still be able to squeeze an EX CW in when he launches one.
I liked the mix-ups though. You don’t use too much MK CW–which is a good thing–though you use it when you can. Try launching it from blocked low strings (cr.LKx2> MK CW). At this range you still get to take advantage of the first CW hit to break Hyper armor, while adding chip damage if the opponent continues to block. On block (or hit), Gouken can’t do anything offensively to put pressure on you–backdash/jump away if you’d like, just to be safe.
i try to steer clear of reversal flame kicks in general. i think it gives away too much as to what you are thinking. i’ll do it as last ditch, or if i have meter. but as far as the matchup goes, i wanna say he’s even on block if it hits deep. you can reversal out if they go for followups, but i would rather just block or try to tech. on the subject tho, if you choose, you can reversal out of all but the deepest crossups too. mk’s and mp’s dont have much blockstun at all from jump ins. but like i said, it reads that you can be baited easily, so i try not to do it so much.
you are right about just walking in tho. problem is, ive been playing online more lately, and vs online scrubs, open space=fireball, so those ultra long range ones are me guessing. what i should do is walk into range where i can CW on reaction to a fireball, so you are spot on with that.
i also jumped in way more than usual, but once i begin to concentrate on something, in this case, command grab setups, its hard for me not to harp on it. i hate learning new stuff or coming up with ideas close to a tourney. tomorrow we got one, and i know i’ll be hopping around like a jackass
I’ll be playing offline casuals with a few friends of mine on a live stream within a few hours, around 6-7 pm EST.
I’ll throw my fei long in the mix somewhere. There’ll be some interesting commentary going on as well. Enjoy!
Last night was a lot of fun, if you missed anything the streamed videos are still available on Saki’s channel. My fei play starts here http://www.justin.tv/clip/ecd24ef3fa0276b0
Edit: I miss like… every link possible. I tried to stop double tapping for the rekka punches, so I miss a lot of hit confirms even though I tried to input them. My zoning and pressuring was good enough to win matches though.
I don’t think Gouekn’s divekick from demon flip has any recovery at all to be honest. The hitstun and blockstung on that thing are huge as well. He was probably just not blocking and was going for throw/s.fierce/etc instead and you hit him during the gap.
One thing about Gouken (from the vids) is that when he’s going for demon flip reset, reversal DP should beat everything he does after the demonflip… He can try to go behind you instead, but in those vids he was doing short demonflip. Fei Long’s DP ain’t the greatest, but I know the shotos rape his demon flip resets like that.
Hey good job on a few comebacks vs Balrog and Able with good Tenshin and smart super combo.
Nice ones Jibbo. Just one question: you managed to place some nice flamekicks FADC (especially vs cammy), why didnt you followed with ultra? were you working on chicken wing follow ups?
Standing jab to tenshin, zoning, cr.mk xx super… really nice. I see you didnt use much of chicken wing vs Abel tough.
Thanks guys, I’ll be uploading the vids individually to youtube daily.
Here’s where my “streak” ended
Lorte: The simple answer is I’m not practiced enough with Fei to have everything on the brain. I was missing a lot of links and I was having some stick trouble for some reason the whole night, which is my I wasn’t completing some rekkas. My wrists and fingers went retarded for a night or something. I’m working on it though.
Oh and Knuckledust was punishing the CWs, so I laid back on them. Then he threw the shit outta me. Abel.
Watched you streak, JibBo. Very pleasing. I definitely liked how you abused your Flame kick FADC > Ultras.
The Abel Vs Fei matchup. I was burning to see the CW the entire match. (Where is it?!)
I need to learn how to pressure and zone to that effect.
Looked like you were using the wrong strength at the wrong range. In the first link you posted, I saw a HK CW up close, two attempts at an EX CW loop (got a 1-hit cross-up, but overall lost to crouching), but no MK CW–even to counter Abel’s meaty throws.
In the second link, you had better spacing with EX CW, but MK still wasn’t in play. I dunno if you think it’s too risky to use or what–it’s actually very limited in liability. With Abel, it also takes out the guess work with spacing since you can use it point-blank. Check the Abel write-ups in the MTUP thread.
In some fights, I think Flame Kick> FADC would have been nice to stop the opponent’s offensive flow, especially ouf of jump-ins. Particularly in the Abel fight, Flame Kick> FADC could have gotten you out of corner traps and back on your feet. I guess it’s a personal question as to whether it’s worth it or not. I just saw a bunch of opportunities where you could have tried it, but decided to play a guessing game with Abel’s mix-ups instead. Preference entirely; you seem to make good use of it on the offensive end, so that could even things out.
Good work overall though, very sharp reactions to the opponent; I was surprised to see so many clutch moves (Ultra vs. Balrog’s dash punch, EX Flame Kick against most jump-ins, etc.). With a little more comfort and experience with his tools/game, you’ll really rock hard with Fei. :nunchuck:
The simple truth about Abel vs mk cw
From a distance st.mp/super/ultra > mk cw
Up close pretty much everything except for throws and backdash > mk cw
MK CW is a tool used to get close to Abel. It’s got decent speed and range. Once you get in, you can mix it up with LK CW or HK CW or Flame kick or BnB or simply dash back rekka rinse and repeat. LK CW is actually pretty good here too b/c it’s a lot faster upclose. At -4, Abel doesn’t have anything in his arsenal to punish you. Also, it’s not simply spamming MK CW over and over and over and over with no rhyme or reason like you’re making it out to be…you gotta learn how to adjust. The only thing I’ve noticed that interrupts MK CW upclose is spamming st. Jabs or cr. Jabs but that’s not very threatening. CW abuse against Abel isn’t really a free win against Abel…but it does make the matchup a lot easier. Not only are you getting up in his face and forcing him to think whether to tornado throw or to roll away, you’re doing block damage as well and all while being relatively safe. Just learn to mix it up and adjust to your opponent.
- Why would you want to be close to Abel with frame disadvantage?
- You may not know this but offline it’s very easy to punish a ranged CW on reaction
Um, because his normals are slow? He doesn’t have a 3 frame basic and as long as you’re decent with your tech throws, you shouldn’t have to worry about much of what Abel is gonna do. Heck you can mash LK CW or MK CW during his pressure block strings and chances are, you’ll go right through and stop his offense then and there. You can backdash, jump neutral, CW or flamekick to avoid almost every single thing he does after a blocked CW. Also, -2 doesn’t give him much frame advantage over you…not to mention, Abel’s weakness is putting pressure on him so how else are you gonna fight him? Aside from EX tornado throw, he doesn’t have the tools to get you off of him but that’s really easy to counter. More than likely, he either has to read all of your offensive options perfectly and counter or sit there and take the assault and try to roll away. Once you get him to get scared of your offense, that’s when throws and tenshin come into play.
- That’s why you DON’T do a ranged CW on him. CW range is not far…it’s about jab rekka range or closer. You want to do it so that the first hit of the CW actually connects on him…meaning if he tries to focus, you’ll break it. Mix this up with rekkas and I assure you, he won’t be spamming st. MP randomly. I’m not sure how good your footsie game is but honestly, this match is Fei’s easiest matchup by far.
Hot tip: cancel a CW off of HP whenever you’re in range. Takes 4 frames to execute and you completely paralyze Abel for the chip. This takes out the “CW takes too long” factor for up-close usage. Out of a jump-in, this is Tornado Throw-safe and your HP will still beat any of Abel’s normals if you choose to delay a bit. Safe options from there include back dash and jumps (retreating jump esp).
On hit, cancel another off of HP or use LP/MK for a looser cancel (to bait a Throw).
Hot tip #2: Close MK> MK CW equals canceled cross-up with a 3-frame gap!!! This means that if the Abel looking to get a jab in, he’ll need to do it perfectly (no spamming), making it just about impossible. If Abel is crouching, this crosses him up when executed from point blank range (j.MP jump-in> MK> MK CW).
I’ll double post this in the Abel thread for kicks.
Yeah I usually try st. LP or st. HP > CW after a blocked CW to keep the pressure going.
