Fei Long Q&A: Ask simple questions here!

That’s the wrong way to think about it.

You have your opponent in the corner, no life, ready to win. What do you do?

A) Rush him down
B) Play defensively and avoid mistakes
C) Continue your gameplan as usual

For any character, 7/10 you’ll want to pick (B). If you’re in a position of dominance, you don’t finish your opponent off; he finishes himself off by pulling desperate tactics.

Next time, watch your spacing and have a good understanding of the maximum damage that the other guy can get on you if you’re standing at a certain range. For instance, if I’m standing full screen from Ryu, I should expect a fireball which is only 60 damage. If I’m standing mid-screen, a tatsu would score 130 or so while a jump could lead to over 300. Closer up, I should smell a cross-up or some footsies play; without Super, this may be as little as 140, but with 2+ bars I should expect something closer to 300+ damage. When you break it down like that, random things don’t just happen and you consciously avoid sitting in a bad spot.

Take a second and examine where you were standing when Gouken tried his EX Dive and ask yourself what you were doing. Typically when he does that, it’s on wake-up-- were you trying to do a meaty attack, or were you ready to counter this Dive at the time? Were you dangerously up-close, or were you at a range where an EX Dive was the only move he could pull “safely?” Go over these questions with Cody as well.

Actually that makes a whole ton of sense. This will definitely help, esp. when there are down-to-the-wire matches that I tend to lose.

I’m finding that I have tons of close matches with other ppl who are truly the Same Skill (or better) than me. I can beat up on the online scrubs (which has gotten me the better part of any and all BP I currently have), but am finding that I can’t get over the hump with good competition. Thanks

A little training device I like to use myself as a warm up from time to time to get my head right -

Stick a sheet of paper over the life bars and now play the match.

You’ll be less inclined to throw out that hail mary Ultra or that obvious chip kill, and will now concentrate on making the correct decisions at all times. Try it in Endless , and see how you react to certain scenario’s.

People tend to play the game backwards, using high risk, high reward set ups when they have no life and using low risk, low reward set ups when they have high health. o_O:)

Like nosone say’s , it’s amazing how players implode when you actually do nothing.

I’ve been realizing that myself lately. I was struggling in the Ryu matchup for a while both due to lack of experience and just not thinking critically about it. I re-read the matchup blurb on it around here and today I played a lot of Ryus and really focused on keeping them in the corner and keep the spacing right, forcing them to do something about it if they wanted to get out. I had a couple people who it seemed like they’d just start holding up-forward. I’d AA, they’d land, and they’d be right back in the air. It shocked me coming from some people who I guarantee yesterday I wouldn’t have beaten.

Been messing around with ex chicken wing then remembered you could actually link st lp to cl st mp into sweep, works on Ryu, Ken, Evil Ryu, Oni, Gouken, Dan, Adon, Seth. This will be the only way to land a sweep from a chicken wing, in AE2012 so practice that if you wanna keep sweeping!, the link is actually easier than st lp sweep, atm i think its a 2 frame link but once AE2012 comes its a 1 frame link you can practice it in Super.

Also if your not confident with your 1 frame link in to st hp from a chicken wing you can do a ex chicken into st lp st hp srk/ rekka, it does slightly less damage due to scaling.

why Vega is bad news for Fei Long???

He beats us at our own game basically. His pokes are fast, far reaching and safe, and we can’t apply the same pressure to Vega as other characters in fear of counter hits into big damage. Vega still suffers under heavy pressure when knocked down though.

The nerfs to cr-mp and overall damage well help Vega further. I’d say it’s a legit bad match now.

He can keep us out pretty well. The only thing is I think they may have changed cosmic heel again, so the 50/50 throw might be easier to deal with (not sure, a vega player could help on that one).

He was always a hard match for fei. His nerds obviously going to make it even harder

Sorry If I’m reposting an often asked question.

I have an insane amount of trouble beating good Bisons. I generally block well, and can usually FA the right moves in order to lead into combos.

I seem to rely on cr. mp when he gets close in order to stuff his moves. His st.HK negates most of my options trying to get in, espcially if I take to the air. I seem to be having to backdash alot to get out of Devil’s Reverse, I follow with rekka pressure sometimes, but generally I end up eating some type of punishment.

Help. This match up has trouble me since vanilla.

Bison is one of my hardest match ups on a personal level. But after knuckling down and asking Bison mains to play him against me, I wouldn’t say I’m comfortable, but I’m not as hesitant as I was (also after some tips from other members!!). A few tips that have helped me…

 1. Both St hp and Cr-hp are essential in this match. From anything outside close you will either trade or beat clean his scissors, St Hp will also beat his slide. So in making Bison realise he won’t get a free meal with pressure strings, apply these counters - a lot! Cr-mp is also effective in that range where he will be throwing standing mk/hk. Learn the ranges, and experiment with them.

 2. Mix up meaty Lk chicken wing on his wake up, it’s a great tool in this match, beats nearly everything he has and even beats some of their OS. It’s risk/reward is in our favour. It’s also very handy on our own wake up aside from dashing. I haven’t met a Bison yet who can punish me for using this.

 3. You can do safe jump (or just walk up) Cr-lk on wake up and is again too fast for him to punish.

 4. EX PC can be rekka’d on the other side for 3 hits if you delay your punish.

 5. As both an AA and a Punish tool, Neutral jump Hk is the best option.

Basically you need to do 2 things in this match, get him to the corner and get him to respect you on wake up. Once he’s done pushing buttons you can start throwing in Tenshin to really blow him up. I find I can cross Bison up quite easily with CW, so don’t be afraid to experiment here either.

I still find personally, a lot of elements in this match come down to 50/50’s for both characters. You just have to be smart with your selections.

One more thing. Having played a few matches now, I’ve drilled into my head that Focus fishing is not worth the pay off. I’ve watched multiple videos (I’m a serial video watcher!) of Fei vs Bison matches and it just never seems to pay off for anyone. Including me.

Against Bison, pretty much everything Highland said. I would add one thing that has been working really well for me.
Try and find the range bison likes to throw out his st.Hk/mk and counter it with st.Lp and buffered HP rekka.

WOW, I really missed this thread.

Explain the option select for back dasher. I pray I won’t have a hard time performing it on a fight pad

Rekka
(light rekka) cr.Lk, d, df, f+LP. If cr.Lk hits stand jab will come out. Will wiff on some crouching opponents.
(medium/heavy rekka) cr.Lk, d, df, f+Lk+Mp/Hp. If cr.Lk hits st.Lk comes out.

Super
d, df+Lk, f, d, df, f+Lk+Hp. (This is the way I input it, it feels alot easier for me this way)

Ultra 1
d, df+Lk, f, d, df, f+PPP (same inputs as super, st,Lp will come out if Lk hits)

Hi everyone, I main Yun (probably shouldnt say this haha), because of this when I choose another character (subs, etc) I find myself lost, it seems that Yun changed my playstyle to 100% rushdown which with 90% of the cast that doesnt work, so I want to get back to basics.

Basically I want to use Fei Long for a while, not to main him (or if I like the character why not?) but because I think Fei is a really good, fun and in my opinion is an awesome fundamentals kind of character (you need really good zoning, poking, spacing) which I think Is what I need to get better at this game) but I find myself struggling, doing rekkas way too much, jumping way too much and focus attacking way too much.

So could you guys give me the most advice you can to playing fei? ANYTHING will be much appreciated.
Thanks!

P.S: Sorry for creating a thread for this, should have posted it in this in the first place

Thanks for the suggestions!

I actually tried what SendMaster mentioned (training with Dr. Sagat); dude is right!

Worse day ever went from 3393 pp to 2200ish. Now I know points don’t matter in terms of skill but I think today I learned I need someone to help iron out my wrinkles.

What are the ways to punish blanka balls ? And how do I input cr. lp to rekka in a combo ? I can get it by itself but comboing it just takes the cake .

I think just slightly delayed fierce rekkas will punish most blanka balls, but I’m not positive. It’s my go-to but I don’t play the matchup much so I don’t know exactly which strengths it punishes.

As far as your combo question, I’m guessing you are chaining into the cr.lp rather than linking so you can’t cancel into a special. I gave a quick rundown on it a little higher on this page (and I think others have covered it on previous pages) but here’s a link to mine at least Fei Long Q&A: Ask simple questions here!. That may not be your issue but give it a shot.
