Fei Long Q&A: Ask simple questions here!

you’re either doing it too fast or too slow, then theres also 2 hits or 3 hits. 3 hits if you hit the sweet spot, 2 hits if you just barely made it. Just working on timing. Not really much spacing involved after an fk fadc.

what i did to practice jab > jab rekka, was to double tap jab while buffering the qcf motion from the 1st jab. not really sure how to explain it, someone will probably come by and explain better then me.

hope i helped :]

The Ultra juggle doesn’t have the same leniency of like say Ryu’s herp derp juggle. You have to time it so that you activate the Ultra just as their falling animation is about to start at the peak of their launch arc. Generally speaking, this will result in 3 hits of the ultra, however each character has a different launch animation, and some are really obscure making it hard to judge. On top of that, each character falls at different speeds. Just practice it over and over and it’ll get easier.

The combo you were describing (cr.LK, cr.LP xx Rekka) is a 1 frame link between the cr.LK and the cr.LP. Fei’s crouching combos are all 1 frame links I’m afraid. You have options however, it’s just that none are easier than any other:

cr.LK/cr.LP, cr.LP xx Rekkas
cr.LK/cr.LP, cl.LK, cr.LP xx Rekkas

It’s troublesome, but you should look up who st.LP whiffs on when crouching (there’s a link to it in the stickied READ ME FIRST guide), and practice the hell outta those links for the other characters.

oh i never considered different falling animations, because i would land it consistently against certain characters, and not others, thanks fellas!

i dont get exactly how to do the OS, cr short/rekka. i was in training mode and it seemed like rekka comes out slow even if cr short whiffs. i know it doesn’t look like a cancel to rekka but i’m not exactly sure what it looks like

This is covered in the OS thread, but it isn’t a cancel at all. The inputs should look like this: :d::lk::df::f::lk:+:hp:

the lk’s should be inputted as if you are linking them, if the cr.lk whiffs then it goes into rekkas, sometimes they will come out slow and are blocked which means the timing between the cr.lk and the st.lk was off.

@Twocan
Good choice to pick fei but the journey is hard and long (don’t worry its fun! to own as fei), here are my 2 cents:

 1. learn cr.lp to rekka (Do not drum all rekka strengths).
 2. Get familiar with dashing, you’ll be surprised how well it helps your defense and offense.
 3. Learn to Anti-Air (flame-kick) jump-ins from both sides on reaction (delay it, if it trades).
 4. Learn to FADC (focus attack dash cancel) the flame-kick.
 5. Learn crouch-teching (hit lp+lk and sync with the block-string input of your opponent).

@Twocan

using training room is great to start out with your execution, but execution isnt the only thing you need to acheive.

If you’re losing a lot then it is most likly due from a lack of blocking, knowing where/when to block is a critial part of this game, and any fighting game for that matter. The best advice I can give you is to play as much as you can, and then look at your replays to see what/where you went wrong. The combo’s and things will come eventually, but focusing on blocking (then eventually throw teching), normal use, and jumping (knowing when to jump) are the main components your going to want to learn first. Just like any game the amount of time you put in is going to equal the rewards of knowing how to play and how to identify what you should/shouldn’t have done in each match.

good luck! ^^b

@SendMaster and H1gg1n5

Thanks for the info. Fei is hard, but for some reason I don’t wanna play as anyone else. I’ll practice what you guys told me.

also I Did a tutorial for Pad players for fei, here is the part 2

hope this helps

The most important thing I can say is avoid taking the easy way out. Fei Long has quite a bit of herp a derp in terms of mashing specials and with his increased popularity , online is coming up with a few Fei Long players dressed up as Ken (mashing Dragon punches). Resist this at all costs, It won’t only make you a better Fei Long player but a better player in general.

I’m talking about throwing out Chicken Wing 50/50s and mashing out a Flame kick, or naked tenshin set ups and abusing specials. You’ll find yourself in a lot of these situations with Fei Long as you need to be close to your opponent, but back dashing or simply blocking is the percentage play.

Let THEM make the mistake, if you do that, your already better than 30% of the players without touching a button. People think with Fei Long you need to go windmilling in with Rekka’s like a school kid. Fei Long can play defense just as well as attack. This was my problem when I first started, I alway’s thought I had to finish everyone off as quickly as possible.

Highlandfireball, thanks. I was actually watching some starnab vids and noticed that he approached the opponent slowly even though they would keep spamming hadoukens or specials. I’ve been coming up on this problem online but sometimes patience actually makes it easier. I gotta learn how to keep an opponent cornered though, and also my reaction with flame kicks is wack haha.

Starnab is a great place to start, and obviously Mago (God). Spamming and zoning is what your going to have to get accustomed to as its the best way to play against Fei Long. You will tear your hair out when you come up against a turtle Bison or Guile. Just remember though they are playing that way because they are afraid of what you can do up close.

Spacing and footsie’s are 2 of the most important things in SF4. Stay grounded and use neutral jump and focus cancels to advance. I watched the below video the other day, watch how Mago tries to stay within a certain mid range area against Ryan Hart (and never jumps), it makes opponents afraid to attack because Fei Long can punish the slightest mistake HARD.

The guy he’s facing is one of the UK’s top players. It shows you just how good Mago is.

I had a few questions actually.

For fei’s c.lpxx HP Rekka for some reason I’m not doing it as fast as i know I should be able to do it. I can do s.HPxx HPRekka sort of consistently but for some reason it seems i cant nail the low one. Anyway I am a beginner so thats part of it. Also I was wondering, I have a dsl box and its directly connected to my ps3. I saw someone say that its better for sf4 to use a small tv or something of the sort, but I’m using a vizio 32’ hd. Should I try to use a cheap small tv for better command input or is it just me? Thanks. More questions definitely to come.

 1. There are various methods and not all Fei’s use the same one. Nosone has a guide all the different methods - I’ll try and dig it up for you. Personally I use the Piano method where I push :d::lp::df::hp::f: , you can use MP instead of the hard. Basically piano another button with your fireball motion.

 2. They are talking about Lag. Size is not imporant, it’s how many frames your unit lags. Older CRT’s have no lag, as do a lot of gaming monitors. TV’s on the other hand vary. The best things you could do are make sure you have “Gaming” set in your options (if it has that option).

Also on X-box you can hook it up with a VGA cable (PC) and that can help. Basically all the fancy picture gimics on new TV’s can induce Lag, making 1/2f combo’s harder to pull off as your not getting the punch at the exact moment you hit the button.

Check this out… http://shoryuken.com/f177/new-definitive-hdtv-lag-faq-174085/

Then check the thread to see if your TV may be listed.

for his cLPxxHP rekka, you just have to hit training mode and the key is that you are doing it too fast, try this way cLP then make sure your qcf motion is complete (joystick pointin forward and not diagonal) then press HP. that how I do it and I land it like 93% of the time

Fei help

Hi, I’m new to Fei and I have some questions. Is there a way to stop the shoto crouching medium kick poke. I try cr.mp and it works sometimes but I mostly get stuffed. What should I do when my cr.hp starts to get counter poked with sweep?. Also when Is a good time do use Fei’s command grab/EX command grab because I never know when to use it. Can someone tell me some of fei’s frame traps because I couldn’t find any and I would like to add them into my game because I have no way of punishing people that like to press buttons during my block strings. The option selects I use are:cross up sweep, cr.short/cr.hp and the ultra os to catch teleporters is there anymore useful option selects I should be using?. I also want to learn the cr.mk ultra 2 option and the cr.lk rekka option select can someone explain to me how to do those option selects.

I just have one question. What can I do against cornered players that keep jumping backwards? Sometimes I try to dash forward on reaction and do a flame kick, but if they dont attack the kick will whiff completely. The only thing that worked once was me walking forward and press s.HP as anti air. What else can I do?

Probably Guile or Ken right? Not much, you just have to wait it out, you can either time your own forward jump to beat theirs - as our jumping HK will beat out a ton of shit. You can CW as they land, or you can just wait it out. If they back themselves into the corner, that’s where you want them. Standing HK is better choice than HP if your going down that route.

Not every match needs a KO, playing the clock can be just as smart.

@ twocan: for cr.lp>rekka try using something other then hp.rekka. If you use lp/mp rekka you will have a larger window to connect the combo. (check the wiki all the frame data is there, I think the difference is like 3 frames in start up from lp to hp)

@VCFan1001: any shoto’s cr.mk should be blocked, you shouldnt be trying to beat it with anything because if they have meter they can do some very nasty stuff. Also it is usually followed up with a fireball, which can either be FA’d or if you have the meter ex-CW through, which we all know can be huge dmg for fei. Fei’s frame traps, and while these work I’m not sure what the frame window is between (check the wiki) cr.lk>st.cl.mp , cr.lk>st.cl.hp (is unsafe on block and hit, so be sure you input something after the cl.hp) , cr.mp x2, ect. As far as OS’s there is a whole thread dedicated to that, I think it should be in the READ THIS FIRST THREAD.

@ H1gg1n5

So is it the speed i’m entering the combo, because it should come out fine, I know im doing it smoothly. Look at 0:19 and again at 0:30 in this vid,
c.lp xxRekka. It’s not difficult but I have problems doing it

Also anyone have tips on Chicken wing> s.hp xxRekka? Do i need to learn to plink to do this correctly? Thanks.
