So I mostly play Vega and was recently recommended to give Fei a shot since he has a little bit less of an uphill battle most times, and they do about the same spacing/footsie game…and turns out I really dig the character. I mean he’s fucking Bruce Lee.
Anyway, knowing that I won’t be able to chain c.LK in Ultra, I’ve just been doing the cr.LK > st.LP > cr.LP but mostly focusing on cr.LK > cr.LP, cr.LP and that’s been going alright (Vega’s bnb with 2x cr.LP is one-frame already so I think that’s helping).
Q1: However, the only way I’ve been able to get the combos consistently to cancel into rekkas is by using negative edge from cr.LP or st.LP or w/e and then switching to HP Rekka for the last two hits. Should I stick with the negative edge method or stop being lazy and train my hands to be fast enough to do it without? Is there a benefit later on that I will not get for learning this way and then end up kicking myself?
Q2: My second question is, I really like playing Vega defensively, patient, get the knockdown after a punish and put them in the mini frametrap/kara throw vortex. Outside the Kara throw, will I be rewarded for this kind of play with Fei? It really seems that way from the few matches I’ve seen, and he seems to have a few better options to boot
General consensus on Fei vs. Rufus matchup? Played probably 60-70 games vs one last night and was just curious what people consider the matchup odds. Imo, I’d give it 55-45 fei but I’m still learning Rufus so I’m not the most qualified.
Since edition selection is coming out for USF4, is this the correct inputs for this old SSF4/AE Fei combo that Mago did all the time, Cl. Standing MP > MK Chicken Wing > St. Fierce > HK Flame kick? Also is it character specific?
It’s cl.MP xx Heavy Arc Kick, can’t link cl.HP from the Medium version.
And yes, it is also character specific:
Cammy, Chun-li, Dudley, Juri, Makoto, Rose and Sagat.
If I remember correctly, you could also get it to work on Vega and Seth by scoring a focus crumple, doing a cr.LK to put them into an air reset, dash under and catch them–I think–with a meaty cl.MP xx Heavy Arc Kick. I believe it has something to do with forcing one of their reel animations that will allow the Arc Kick cancel to connect.
For sure. Most newer Fei Long players think he’s a rush down character which couldn’t be further from the truth. If you start with a good defensive base you’re more likely to play the character properly in the long run. All of Fei’s bad habits are because people get impatient on the attack (random Chicken wing, random Rekka, mashing)
Fei advantage 6-4 IMO. Fei has one if the best mid ranges in the game, rufus has one of the worst. Also Fei has a couple of unblockables on Rufus if you want to get deeper than just general play.
If Rufus has no meter, he’s basically free to constant pressure.
Go into training mode. Don’t mash them out. Make sure you do your quarter circles right. Set your sunny to auto block, it’ll block anything not linked after the first hit. Your dropped links and rekkas will be blocked.
Start out slow Til your hands are used to them.
After you get that practice canceling into them. Start from cr. lp, then cl st. Mp and hp.
Then your links to cancels
Cr lk, st lp , cr lp xx rekka
Cr lk, cr lk, st lp, cr lp xx rekka
Cr mp, cr lp xx rekka
Cl st mp, cr lp xx rekka
Once you can nail those consistently you’ll be ready to rock.
People who SRK on reaction to rekkas? Change up your rekka timing, whiff normals to bait them into using the SRK which makes them hesitant to do it again, or play footsies with his normal moves / walking back and forth / blocking. Sometimes the best thing to do is be patient.
Is this in the neutral game? During footsies? If it is it would seem to me, and I think carboardbox said it too, that you are getting predictable with your Rekkas. My suggestion would be one of two things:
if they are doing focus as a reaction to counter Rekkas then I think they may have caught on to your Rekka timing and like mentioned above, use normals or whatnot to see if they if you can get them to throw out a twitch focus back dash. If you can do that, then you have them where you want them, as you can catch them as they are landing from the backdash with a Rekka or normal (cr hp is good)
If they are NOT doing it on reaction and are doing it because they “know your timing” then you are in a much better space, as cr.lp Rekka is free most of the time. If that isn’t the case, a CW will break armor, doesn’t have to be the HK/EX or even MK. LK CW has the fastest startup and from the sound of it you should be close enough to get the first hit to break the armor. Even better, if you are a bit out of range for the first hit and are using the MK CW, since they aren’t reacting and simply doing it the MK sets up a nice CH only situation where the first hit whiffs, the second hit they absorb, and the third hit is a CH since they were expecting Rekka so they focused then let go which actually lets you cr LP xx Rekka pretty easily since you’re +2 on hit normally but with CH you are +5. While it may seem like cl hp is the way to go, I find cr LP Rekka not only easier but you tend to not be right next to the opponent after this situation so most likely cl hp will come out as far hp.
Hey guys any help or tricks on landing combos after tenshin? I just can’t seem to land it consistently. should I be doing to flame kick? Well duh yeah I should but I’ve been removing the stand to try and make it easier to start. Any tricks or cues to watch when to button press?
Okay my go to is do a St. HP<Rekka. Tenshin leaves you at +7 and the HP is a 4 frame move so the link isn’t super tight, especially if you play on stick and you plink. Until you get that down you can literally just mash flame kick and it’ll connect every single time. it does a lot less damage but its guaranteed. You’ve also got the option to do st. HP<flame kick< FADC< Chicken wing. Just practice the link and you’ll get it.
