That’s more a play style thing than something specific to Fei although the characters you mention are all possibly bad (Akuma) or slightly bad (Viper/Seth) matches for Fei. I do know exactly what you mean though.
Against “nuts” style players I generally don’t do much at all, I wait for those players to make reckless mistakes or random bullshit that might work if I were playing more aggressive. I try and stay grounded and just counter whatever they have and try to make them burn meter, basically I make the most of my situations. Like this Blanka player for example - I’m not really doing much here apart from some solid pressure and waiting on him doing something stupid…

That works for me against Seth and Akuma also with U2 stocked. Viper I would rush down a bit more since the threat of reversals isn’t as high and she can be baited.
Why wouldn’t you use HP rekkas if you’ve already hit-confirmed into them?
Keep persevering dude. I was messing around with Fei a few months ago, and my only aim was just to make sure I landed his BnB combo and made sure I punished my opponents properly and drove them into the corner. Kinda got bored of him and now playing him a bit more now, since PR Rog has been streaming his Fei a lot lately.
Just because of the Lp rekka set ups mate , also habit - also Jack Daniels - I love the stuff Although in this case it doesn’t really matter, I’m not willing to pressure aggressive players, I’d rather let them hang themselves.
Those 3 are annoying as hell as Bison, you mean I gotta put up with it more?
Will do. Yeah, PR Rog’s Fei is pretty good considering how long he’s been using him. I wanted to switch to Fei for the same reason he changed from Rog. There isn’t really anything special about Bison tbh. Fei is quite boring (I find Bison boring), but whatever gets the job done! May as well switch to another character that is good at applying pressure also, instead of the rush down vortex ones. Shit, I’ve been through almost the whole cast, I either need to find someone and stick, or just go back, messing around for so long is affecting my play badly.
I may turn up to that casual after all, I’ll just ignore everyone, play and leave when I get fed up lol.
LP Rekkas give better setups right? I always use lp, but I actually dunno why. I’ll just look at the stickies again.
Fei is a boring character and needs to be played pretty lame most of the time. I play about 4 main characters and about 2 subs although none at the level of Fei. Still he needs to be played boring and a lot of folk don’t have the patience for that. I’d say PR switching from Fei was just so he could play a similar style with a better character although I have no idea about that, just a guess.
Fun wise of my characters I’d say I’d go
Gouken - So many sexy corner combo’s , big damage, easy to play.
Sagat - Zoning when your good at it is fun as hell, great meter combo’s - hard as hell to play
Yang - So much you can do with this guy, if he wasn’t as nerfed you’d see tons of yangs - very hard to play
Ryu - Who can’t play Ryu! Great combo’s, great footsie’s, some awesome hit confirms into Ultra’s - easy to play
Fei - Great footsie’s, great special in the rekka…that’s about it, there’s nothing fun about Fei (apart from being bruce lee!) he’s just solid - moderate skill
Cammy - Drunk out my skull at 2 am and needing wins??? Flow chart cammy - Easiest character to play in the game.
What do you mean by LP rekka setups? Is there a different amount of pushback after LP compared to HP rekka? All the high level Fei Long players I’ve watched always finish the rekka combos with the hard rekka. Even if there is more pushback after the HP rekka, isn’t the aim to drive the opponent into the corner anyway?
It is , but all rekka’s drive the opponent to the corner. The Lp and Mp versions recover (I think from memory) 3 or 4 frames faster. Gackt and Ryukichikun use lp/mp in enders quite a lot of you watch their replay’s on you tube, Mago and Fuudo use it too but it’s hard to find online replay’s of those guys.
I think the optimum rekka combination these days is 1st - LP - incase of mistakes on recovery - 2nd - HP damage setting - 3rd - MP for recovery.
At the end of the day it makes very little difference to a casual player like me to be honest. Like I say it’s more out of habit than anything else.
Following from the last guy. I’ve decided to try and pick up Fei to simply fanboy PR Rog. I love the guy and he’s helped me a lot with Balrog, so I’d like to tag along with Fei and learn more with this character. I understand how he plays, but I’m struggling to see why PR switched.
Difficult Combos
Worse Mixup
Worse Ultra utility
Harder time against Fireballs (?)
I want to learn Fei and maybe even main him if and when I get tired of Balrog, But could someone tell me how I should play with him? I understand space control is essential, but even in the corner I feel gimped using Fei instead of Rog. Everything seems weaker?
The recovery will make a difference if the 3rd rekka is whiffed or blocked, but I can’t see how it makes a difference if you’ve already hit-confirmed and the opponent is knocked downed. It’s still a techable knockdown, so what could anyone possibly set up afterwards? Do you see the point now?
Pr Switched because Fei is the better Rog. He is better in every way shape and form.
The combos take a second to get used to and it is slightly annoying when st.jab doesn’t connect on crouchers but its alright in the long run.
-Much better mixup. What mixups does Rog have other than his jab roundhouse frame trap and shimmy. Absolutely nothing. Fei has a command grab several more frame traps and the most ridiculously ambiguous crossups.
-Their ultra’s are both pretty good. Go through fireballs and do plenty of chip but do a lot less damage when combo’d into. The only problem is fei generally needs to burn 2 bars for his ultra but its something you need to get used to.
-Against fireballs Fei’s chicken wing and great focus attack are fine. Also rekkas corner carrying let you not have to worry about fireball pressure.
-Fei has a better ground game. Not as great of a jab or sweep but fei has great normals.
-You don’t need to charge.
-Rekka’s are an easier and slightly better dash punch.
I’m in the same situation as you. I started this game playing balrog saw Pr Rog play and was inspired. When he switched to Fei I decided to try it myself and so far I am loving fei. I definitely miss the sweep but everything else is a huge improvement.
Ironically though, after all that, Balrog is a very tough match for Fei IMO… go figure!!!
I agree though, Fei does everything Balrog does but better. I wouldn’t say Fei’s footsie’s are THAT much better than Rogs since rog has walk speed on his side, just that command specials trump charge specials.
