You’re not wrong. Just looking at some of the other characters buffs and at lease one new character (Elena), Fei is going to be in the high mid tier. Here’s who’s definitely going to give him problems now;
Akuma. Nothing’s changed here, Fei is just weaker now so by default Akuma gets even more points in this matchup.
Rose: Same
Sagat: Buffed. His defensive and offensive game is better. Fei can’t pressure him the same now. He went up, Fei went down.
Zangief: Threat to everyone, more of a general threat to Fei. Gief is definitely one of the better characters in the game again. So much is good, his grappling reach, option selects, damage and the fact he can set up true 50/50’s with the double Ultra. The loss of safer light Rekka for Fei is a big plus for Gief.
Vega: Yeah, this one’s only getting worse for Fei.
Still a decent character, but as I’ve mentioned before, Capcom’s had enough of Fei in the top tier for this game. I don’t think we’ll be seeing a lot of Fei players out there. There’s been worst though, Honda players are really crying right now.
I wouldn’t really say Sagat got buffed; they added like 2 more recovery frames on his high tiger shot. The only actual buff I’d count would be his U1 hitting for full damage in the corner, but even that comes with drawbacks in that the Ultra now deals less damage and it’ll now whiff in situations where he needs to TU fadc back xx Ultra. Still, Sagat made it out of the “rebalancing” in a much better shape than Fei, so yeah this match might even be in Sagat’s favor now.
Characters like Ryu can now punish a blocked rekka every time, doesn’t matter if it’s perfectly spaced. It was a matchup formerly in Fei’s favor, but that’s probably no longer the case. Vega is going to be a problem, he’s got faster walkspeed and his normals reach from further distances than Fei; anything less than a perfectly spaced lp rekka and he eats cr.mp xx EX flying barcelon. And those are just two characters out of the cast…
I don’t know if it was someone in this thread that said it but I remember reading one poster saying “don’t be surprised to see Fei being a threat in majors and even winning some” (paraphrase). LOL! These sort of people are gonna be in for a rude awakening in the coming months.
Disagree about Akuma, I think that one get’s a bit better, vortex toned down, Fei’s footsie’s better than Akuma’s, no threat of Ultra from a sweep and nerfed recover on air fireball are all big things for Fei. I’m interested to see how his far fierce cancel goes now though in the match up.
Evil Ryu on the other hand I think possible goes bad now, the health buff is just the icing on the cake for him and has big damage from easy hit confirms. Viper from my brief experience seems very strong.
Too early to talk match ups but I apologize for being a bit downbeat, he’s not as weak as I initially thought. I’m still very interested to see how he goes on heavily footsie based matches though, I’ve yet to play a good Vega/Chun/Rog as yet. Rufus as a character seems even more dumb than he was before if that’s even possible, although I still think Fei beats him.
the first 3 hits are all rapid cancels, and the last low jab is a 2 frame link
works on crouchers too.
the only drawback is the last jab whiffs on some characters if you do it from a cross up
you can substitute by starting from cr.lp into cr.lk as the hit confirm, and then 2 frame link the last low jab
that one should be pretty universal. no more unplinkable for crouching characters, and a universal combo starter-YAY. also you get better abare because if you crouch teched too fast youre still going to get cr.lk into cr.lp, then you just switch to another cr.lk and link low jab into rekkas
just so you guys know, i think this fei might be better than 2012 fei
his close range damage got a major boost. better abare. combos into ultra that hurt thru juggles or RF.
all at the expense of 1 frame on his rekka which still wont be punishable like 90% of the time, and cr.lk. which wasnt even really nerfed because they gave you +4 which opens up a whole truckload of other shit
Sako and Daigo thought Ryu and E Ryu had an advantage over Fei. Yet it was ‘common knowledge’ Fei beat those characters. Loufy Rose consistently beat Japan’s Fei’s. Same with Xian’s Gen, Snakeeye’s Gief, and PR Rog’s Balrog. What I’m getting at is I think Fei was strong in AE2012 without a doubt but a bit overrated maybe? Seemed like character specialist changed the way people viewed matchups. Like most if not all those matchups were thought to be in Fei’s favor but ended up being bad matchups. And there are so few good players that play the bottom of the barrel characters. So maybe underexplored characters = underexplored matchups . This all comes from a guy who never played Fei. I just enjoyed watching the character.
TL:DR maybe Fei wasn’t as overpowered as people thought he was?
The problem was AE still had a lot of bad characters. Fei was strong but it was a lot to do with characters being trash also. Personally I didn’t think that any character was too good in AE2012, sure Cammy had some dumb shit, but she wasn’t broken.
I’m slightly scared for the patch, I’ve got this bad feeling Fei might get hit again.
EX Tenshin is a beast now. When you’re in that range where you’re threatening the opponent with cr.mp, just throw it out. It comes out so fast, it’s ridiculous. I feel like it will become a major part of Fei’s gameplan.
I will agree with this thinking about it, the way vortex in general has been toned down in the game hurts Akuma and he has other nerfs. I still don’t see an easy victory though for Fei, but am curious to see how it falls down now.
Sagat has a few buffs, but it’s more the style of the game is really suited to him. Vortex’s are slimmed down, delayed wake really works well for him when being rushed down, dual Ultras really benefit, his chief rivals are weaker while he isn’t, characters that have gone up in the tiers aren’t a big threat to him (Gief being a great example).
He wasn’t. Well, he was in vanilla AE, but 2012 was fine. I mean just look at the tournament results out there. How many big Fei wins did you see, anywhere? Mostly from Fuudo over the years. On the other hand, look at all those pretty Cammy/Akuma wins. Fei was fine as was in 2012.
I’m still having a tough time forgiving what they did to his clk. It makes a difference. Aside from pressure, his crouch tech is slower now and opponents are less worried about set ups. There is simply less fear towards Fei.
There’s a lot of glitches in this version, a shit ton. Also one of the Sagat players messaged Combofiend and asked about Sagats high TS, he said they may change it back. Speculation but I’m assuming this DLC is more of a test run than a final Disk product.
As a Sagat mainer, Fei was one of his easier hard matches if that makes sense. You can zone Fei Long to a certain extent and you never have to worry about some mid/full screen BS because EX chicken wing is extremely easy to react to. If your corner game is solid, the Fei Long player is impatient, he just gets whittled away. I think it’s probably close to even, possibly slight advantage Gat.
The damage buff will help Fei a lot though if he gets in and of course the command grab. I wouldn’t worry too much about Gat, he’s not that much better than the old version, in fact its debatable if he’s better at all.
Either reduce the corner carry or pushback on the FIRST lp Rekka ON HIT, or revert the range nerf on the SECOND and THIRD lp Rekka (if they were nerfed as well). I’ve whiffed way too many times after hit confirming the first lp rekka and have had the tide of the match turn on me; in other words, I’m being punished for making the correct read/whiff punishing/hit confirming correctly.
Revert the nerf to the hitstun on the l/m/h 2nd rekka hit. The timing is really stupid; I’ve missed Rekka combos after hit confirming and have lost matches because of this, as well. Maybe I just need to put in more work on getting the “new” rekka timing down, but why change the timing of the rekkas now after 5 years?
This is going to be standard now , especially in the corner. You’re best off hit confirming with LP rekka then using MP rekka as your second. Just make damn sure you hit!
messed around with fei, those buffs are awesome (st hp and the ultra)
hes gonna be fine in ultra, though im already missing the derp focus range and various ex tenshin setups. Regardless the future looks good for fei, and he benefits from dwu
