Not having a Hammer Throw special is such a oversight.
This has been THE INVINCIBLE SWORDSMAN saying:
But at least we got to see Mighty Thornado in the movie too.

I just bought thjis game and will be playing it as soon as my stick comes in later this week or next
I want to have one character who is strong and has good stamina and wanted to pick thor as I like his in the comics and like a character who has projectiles and has one throw
However why is it I never see him slected in tournaments?
He’s tough to play and he’s fairly slow. Hits like a truck full of lightning but he isn’t auto pilot like a lot of other characters
A lack of: rapid jab (for effective hit confirm), lack luster projectile, no reversal, only one move that has super armor (and it has to be charged), pretty slow air dashes, difficulty getting in, relies significantly on gimmicks (especially for command throw set ups), relies significantly on assists for getting in to deal good damage, as such if he’s by yourself you’re pretty screwed. The last point is more so if he’s up against a top tier character.
However, thor is often slept on as a character. He has a lot of features, his supers have pretty good dhc synergy, he benefits A LOT from xfactor guard cancels (command grabs more so), with xfactor activated he becomes extremely dangerous as the block damage he causes is huge. His command grab super is good to dhc into from supers. He has many other benefits that I’m sure others will state.
But his most important asset is his command taunt. Only fitting for a god since it builds meter.
EDIT: Yea the movie was awesome, and yes he does have the hammer throw and return. It’s mighty punish, he smacks you with the hammer and mentally uses it to slam you into the ground and calls it back into his hand.
Either way, they did an excellent job of depicting thor as a character. If only he had his comic book speed…
two moves have armor. i swear i say this once a week. full charge strikes and full charge smash H
My apologies.
as I said I havent played this game but does he have an easy combo like lp, mp, hp, lk, mk, hk special and then do the first set again whilst in the ar to knock them to the ground
The combos aren’t that difficult. But playing a basic thor won’t get you anywhere fast. The true potential of thor is in his resets. There are several tutorials out there… really good ones too… but yeah that stuff is a bit advanced, and requires sufficient planning (because some of these set ups depend on which way the opponent techs, and can be much more dificult)
For just working on some really basic stuff I’d say his best basic combo is:
j.:h:, c.:l:,c.:h:,:dp:,:s:,sj.
:h::s:, (land), :dp::h:.
Really good combo… hurts really bad for a combo that doesn’t use any supers or resets. Plus landing j:h: is easy since there’s no timing involved… just aiming lol.
A couple of other good points about this combo are:
1-many of his resets can be performed at differnt points in this combo.
2-you can super at pretty much anytime you want during the combo for good damage.
3-the first few hits create a great block string set up. if they block the j.:h:, c.:l:, do c:m: instead of c.:h: and continue into :dp:. Most characters will be forced to block the Mighty Smash, and you can land an :h: Mighty Hurricane (1 frame start up) and go into a full combo for a crap load of damage, or even Mighty punish.
Honestly the combos are easy… but maneuvering thor is the tough part. You have to learn to move around. He’s slow, but he has great movement options. There are tutorials for that too…
problem with that is that mighty smash M is not safe on block so unless you’re gonna use mighty punish it might not be a good idea. I think that you should just stick with cr.L, cr.H and if they block the start of the combo then cancel the cr.H into L mighty hurricane before it hits.
well, i was thinking that too, but he’s a novice you know? wasn’t sure if he’d be ready for Kara throws lol. But yes, if he is comfortable with it, you are definately right about that.
novice :annoy:
I can do Jump Fierce, stand Fierce into an hadoken so I know my skill level is good :razzy:
Hello people I am back. Been awhile took a long MvC3 hiatus, been playing GOW3 beta and MK9 for a bit but I think im gonna get back into the swing of things here.
So any new Thor technology founded in the past weeks or month that is worth fiddling with? Any nasty reset set ups and what not?
So I decided im making a new Thor team. He just doesn’t fit extremely well in my current team of Wesker/Dorm. Neither have a GTF off me assist that I want to really make my Thor competitive. So I was thinking of Akuma or Haggar for the get off me assist (leaning towards Akuma). Then I can’t think of a 3rd member. I want to use someone not on my other team (So no Wesker, Trish, Dorm) because I like exploring the game by using mutliple characters.
So some characters im seriously considering for my 3rd are Dante, Viper, Phoenix, and Zero. Which of these would fit the best with Thor? Im trying to build my team around Thor to make him as useful as possible. Any other character suggestions would be great to if you think someone could fit better with Thor/Akuma
Hulk seems to work well with Thor. He has his anti-air charge and he can DHC for massive damage. I use Tasky though for my number two spot because he can DHC glitch and/or use up arrows I still like skrull as a 3rd because he gets a major lvl 3 boost and his tenderizer in the corner can hold a character really well off of the H Mighty Smash for a nice combo extender. Other then that there isn’t a whole lot of new tech. Just skills being refined. I find if you land the randy savage elbow you should follow up with s.C, M Might Smash, l.C, launch. The timing isn’t really that tough and you’re doing 442,600 after you land S. NOT BAD if you ask me. And if the s.C is to hard to hit after the elbow, l.C will do just fine.
Forgive me Thor for I have sinned.
I knew not about the power of H Mighty Smash. Been playing Thor since release date… yes I’m that dumb.
For dummies like me the H mighty smash gives you a frame advantage if blocked. Also if charged it gives you more hitstun, thus allowing you some standard Thor combos. All you need is a good projectile assist and you can get in pretty good with Thor and actually apply some pressure after a move. If he blocks, you have time for a low kick into L mighty hurricane.
What I want to know from some of you if how much the H mighty smash works for you in matches? I used to use flight and mighty strike to get in… this changes everything
I didn’t know it was that positive on block, I’d just been using it because I knew it was safe. Thanks for the tech. I do have a hard time spacing it though, thing flies a lot farther forward than I think it does.
Yeah, it’s positive on block, but it’s hard to use for Pressure since half the time you’ll just fly over your opponent’s head…
Yea the problem is that more often than not you will just completely whiff and then get completely fucked up lol. I use to think H Mighty Smash was Godlike because I was able to abuse it on a non moving dummy in training mode haha. Most of the time people won’t be just standing still for you to really use it effectively.
if you do fly over them you could always cancel it into mighty punish
well i posted a different follow up to the corner mighty smash H a few pages back if you havent seen that already http://shoryuken.com/f382/feel-heavens-wrath-thor-thread-reloaded-263957/index46.html#post10576992
Anyways i think all of the characters you listed work well with thor so i suppose it depends on who you prefer to use. Ammy is another good character to use with thor imo, she’s a great character all around + her assist is great for pinning down players and she can use the DHC glitch. Jill might also be a good character to use with thor, i havent tried her yet because the psn is down but i plan on making a Jill/Thor/Dorm(or Doom) team when its back up.
I may sound like an idiot, but I am having a difficult time trying to kara cancel Thor’s cr. H into his command throw. Is there an input leniency, or is it really just 2H, 63214L? Every time I press H, it seems like it comes out far sooner than it should be possible to make the full half circle. I’ve spent 30 mins in the lab on two occasions now trying this one move and didn’t get it once.
try 63H214H
it was mentioned on page 13.
