I’m about to leave for work right now or I’d test more stuff out. Definatly gonna be back on it later though. One last thing, and this was probably already known, but doing the Kara throw out of forward dash gives it alot of range, hits from about half screen almost. Could possibly be used to punish some things.
Right now I’m serrrrriiiously considering adding Haggar for the lariat assist. My Thor getting rushed down so easily that I honestly see no other option. I planned on eventually learning Haggar anyway but this may speed up the process. It’ll suck having another slow character, but fuck it.
Also, FUCK MORRIGAN’S SHELL KICK!!!
I think I’m gonna end up replacing Thor on my “main” team with Phoenix. She is sooooooooo much easier to win with, even in normal Phoenix form.
Your better off than me. I haven’t found a team to place Thor in. So far I only use him with Avengers team. I been thinking about using him with Skrull. You think his orbital grudge assist will provide good lockdown for him? Also Dorm with dark hole.
Man I dunno lol. Honestly now I think he needs a GTFO assist (which seems to be only Haggars), a good projectile assist, AND a good lockdown assist.
I mentioned it before, but I think he can actually zone pretty well with Mighty Spark + projectile assist. I’ve had some pretty decent luck with Mighty Spark + Hulk Gamma Wave assist against alot of characters. If anything, try to find an assist that fills both the lockdown and projectile role. Something that will benefit Thor when zoning with Mighty Spark, and when tri jumping in for mixups. Off the top of my head I believe that Arthur daggers, Sent drones and Doom rocks (or missiles) will fill that role. It’s also important to have a projectile assist that the opponent can’t duck under. Mighty Spark will whiff over many ducking characters, and Ammy can fucking walk / dash forward under it.
I very much think Haggar Lariat will be a necessity for this dude. He gets rushed down so much easier compared to the other big characters. Hulk and Sent at least have super armor to combat air attacks. Haggar has lariat. She Hulk has a bunch of AA options, etc.
Sooooooo as of now if I really wanted to design a team around Thor it would be:
Thor / Haggar / Sent
or
Thor / Haggar / Arthur
or
Thor/ Haggar / Doom
You could probably put Ammy in the last spot as well, but I’m just paranoid about coldstar because it isn’t full screen.
I’m thinking Thor hagger she-hulk
I haven’t tested this yet but does anyone know if after a blocked H mighty smash, if your in range for a command throw since H might smash leaves you at +4?
That should actually work pretty well, since light command grab is 5 frames of startup and grabs for 4 frames I think… so you should be able to overcome the block stun and grab them, just by stuttering it a little, I’ll test it out later.
Interesting. I come here because it feels like thor gets rushed down really easily and hey. Snap!!
I like this idea about back-dash into a normal or launcher. Seems like if they don’t tweak his speed a little bit then he’ll have to do some dodging and weaving until he gets momentum on his side.
Dude is brutal if you actually land the combos. Particular with the OTG smash reset in the corner.
I guess I should give Haggar some more thought for some better assist synergy
Anyone find any tricky ways of landing Mighty Punish yet? I don’t know if it’s kara-able but it might be more useful than we know. Right now I’m experimenting with X-23/Thor/Morrigan because Thor provides me with a solid chunk of health to swap out to and his Mighty Smash assist can OTG into X-23’s Silent Kill hyper for some amazing damage. But I’m not sure how THEY can help HIM. Any ideas? I don’t think either X or Morri really have assists that can benefit the thunder god.
H smash pushes them away too far on block although you might be able to kara grab.
Im picking up Thor for my 2nd team… I am going to combine him with Doom (Rocks assist) and ??? I need help for my third member. I was thinking Viper and use her burn kick assist. But do you guys suggest anyone else (prefer the 3rd not to be wesker, chris, or sentinel as that is my 1st team)??? Be nice to have a team all with 8 way air dashes. Also need recommendations on Thor’s assist which one should I use.
I highly recommend Dormammu and Hsien Ko as teammates for Thor. Both Dark Hole and Pendulum really help him, and Mighty Smash works well as pressure/combo-extender/ghetto anti-air for them.
Tons of good info in here. For the people saying they’re getting rushed down, you should try Tron gustaff flame. I run Thor, Sent, Tron and it’s worked wonders for me. Seems to beat out almost anything and can give a free launch on hit.
The thing with me is trying to get in with this man, like some others.he’s got the damage for sure, but it’s a pain trying to get in and combo someone with him,his dash is kind of slow, and not to mention his walking speed also.
What would the best and most effective way to get in on your opponent and combo with Thor? any tips would be appreciated.
There are a few good options, but since none of them are “walk, jump, super-jump, or air-dash forward” they tend to get overlooked (though, to be fair, his air dash is actually pretty good if you cover him).
-
His Mighty Smash is good at leaping projectiles, easy to combo off of on hit, and chargeable to adjust the timing on the fly (i.e. - if the projectile you were leaping was slower than you expected).
-
His Mighty Strike is beastly, and people are totally sleeping on it. You can activate it from and position on ground or in air, including from any of his normals, it has 6 possible directions, and when charged up it goes through almost any (non-hyper) projectile I’ve found. It even seems to beat pillars like Dante’s Jam Session. Like I mentioned in a previous post, think about all the different times you could buffer into it. On a back dash, air dash (any direction), jump, crossover jump, etc. It, too, is chargeable for timing adjustment, and is super-easy to hit-confirm into combos or even just a hyper of your choice. You can even get your opponent into the habit of blocking it, then do one that deliberately falls short, and kara cancel into Mighty Hurricane.

Then, like I said before, his air dash is actually quite good for a high/low game with the right assists (both Wesker and X-23 seem to work well).
Gotta think outside the box, people. Thor is known for getting around by throwing his hammer, and he gets around pretty well doing that in this game, too.
Whoa, his Mighty Strike nullifies non-Hyper projectiles? Sorry if this question has been asked already, but if that’s the case, Thor’s gonna be even more of my favorite than he already is! This whole time I’ve been using it simply as a pressure move to get in close. That’ll just open up even more options. While I’m at it, does anyone know if it’s punishable on block? I’ve yet to be hit out of it after being blocked, but then again my roomie is about as good as I am at punishing!
hmmm i was thinking the same thing on trying to get in with his specials instead,so which one would you recommend using more often, his mighty smash or mighty strike? since his mighty smash goes over projectiles and goes full screen also,i would think that’s a better option?.Yes you’re right though his air dash is good, and having a good assist helps also.
Mighty Strike and Mighty Smash, despite their similarities, are useful for very different things. Smash is ground-only and is best used to leap over screen clutter for a quick advance or punish. Strike can be used anywhere (and is in fact most useful from the air), is a bit safer (though doesn’t travel as far), and can be aimed any which way you like. I definitely recommend learning to buffer the Strike command into Thor’s various aerial movement options so that you can pull it out at any time (think Cammy). The diagonal versions are obviously most useful, but the vertical ones can be used for cross-up (straight down in the air) or anti-cross-up (straight up from the ground) respectively. When charged up, the hitbox on it just becomes huge, too.
You’re right dude, his mighty strike is real useful to get in now that i’ve been practicing it as we speak in training mode, and even after an air dash it can be used so that’s pretty sweet also.I just gotta work on the pressure with him now, thanks for the help sir.
Glad to be of service. Thor isn’t the most beginner-friendly, but I really feel that as long as people don’t give up on him before everything is discovered, he’s going to turn into a real team-wrecker.
