For those of you who missed it, at PowerUP 2012 in the Grand Finals of KoF13, ChrisG intentionally sandbagged. He used random select, it was clear that he had no clue how to play most of the roster (for someone who had evidently mastered the entire roster, this may be strategic, but this was clearly not the case). He didn’t know the combos, he didn’t take a match, he was chuckling the entire time. It was clear to everyone watching that ChrisG had simply given up before the match even started.
Now, I don’t want this thread to turn into a debate about whether or not this behavior SHOULD result in a penalty, because that isn’t what this is about. This is about the EVO staff staying consistent with the precedents they have set for this type of behavior at major tournaments.
The EVO staff set this precedent last year, when Justin Wong had his evo points revoked and received a yellow card (which basically means if you do it again, you’re banned from evo). In this case Justin, in MvC3, put phoenix first on his team, and filled the remainder of his team with characters he was clearly not familiar with didn’t know the combos, etc. Despite this, Justin WON A MATCH, but lost the other two. Shortly after there was a front page article announcing the decision to revoke Justin’s evo points on the grounds that he evidently did not try his hardest to win, complete with character smear, etc.
I’m a fan of both of these guys, but this is something that the EVO staff needs to do, for the sake of fairness.
Without seeing the match in question yet, if everything you said is correct, I have to agree. If standards are set, they should be adhered to and not just making an example of Justin at the top but a Chris G in the middle as well.
Chris G and everyone else knew he was gonna lose so why penalize him for dickin around? It was Chris G, who while still being very good, barely started KOF a couple months ago, vs. Bala who has been playing KOF forever and has been on a rampage in KOF13 to say the least. It’s different than Justin messing with the results and in that case, makin Noel move up.
He did it because he is an insecure shit who knew he was going to lose. Why lose face when you can do the “cool guy” thing and play off your lack of skill.
I dont see a problem here. What advantages does sandbagging have in a FG tourney? He should be banned from using Morrigan because that Astral spam is just ugly.
I don’t think its thats relevant at all. Throwing a match you aren’t confident you can win is no different than throwing a match you think you can, from an ethical standpoint.
I think the thing the EVO staff is most concerned with (and what I would be concerned with) is how bad it looks when any player, for any reason CLEARLY throws a match.
Justin got a yellow card because to the Canons and Wizard he was trying to help his friend, Noel Brown move up in the results thus earning him more seeding points.
Maybe that was YOUR interpretation, but that isn’t what they said. They said they were revoking his points because he intentionally lost the match, which is what ChrisG did. I encourage you to go find their statement from last year.
