Favorite/Most Hated Characters in Fighting Games

Mainly SF4 yeah. I didn’t really have much of an opinion of him until I encountered all these players who use him and basically get rewarded with big damage for playing dumb.

(Noted BB_Hoody, though I was half-joking myself, which is why I tend not to bother joking anyway. It’s just weird I suppose have been on this site so long and suddenly not having some people know where Mecha Zangief stems from; the Vergil thing is…understandable if still amusing since Vergil isn’t normally a fighting game character. Arguably he’s not even a fighting character now since most characters can’t really “fight” against him, especially if he still has at least one part for his Gucci belt of spiraling destruction.

I guess it was inevitable though, especially since Haggar’s in Zangief’s place in the latest Marvel game.)

Meh. Akuma being so powerful is somewhat fine with me since he is a side character that doesn’t really care about anyone save for Ken, Ryu, Gen and now Gouken. He honestly has no motive to be the main villain, just the strongest, which suits me just fine. The thing that bothers me with it is that more causal fans, again, basically treat him like an infallible DBZ character because of it and thusly Capcom seems like they have to live it to by making him always among the stronger characters in every Street Fighter. This even though they often end up screwing over Ryu (or Ken or both) to do it.

It’s also a bit annoying how, to this day, he’s basically still the only Street Fighter character with an aerial fireball of any kind even though that’s not exactly a unique application of projectile. Only other character that has one is Ibuki, but you can literally jab hers out of the air and now they’re further invalidated by delayed wake-up getting rid of her (admittedly stupid) “vortex”. It’s like his mere existence has implicitly banned anyone else from having one, though I’ll admit it’s entirely possible that there are other reasons that no one has gotten one of any kind besides Akuma just existing.

Meh. Although I never really played much of Alpha 2 and never got to play it against people in it, I’m pretty fine with Custom Combos there for some reason. It’s probably because everyone always has access to them rather than them being an option among many that basically invalidates everything else in the game, which is the case with V-Ism in Alpha 3 (though Alpha 3 has other…issues) and part of why A-Groove is the majority of characters’ best groove in CvS2. They’re still at least a bit overpowering in Alpha 2 from what I’ve seen, but they don’t seem to undermine or warp the system mechanics nearly as much as they do in the game compared to other systems with Custom Combos. That is a bit weird because it’s often the first implementation of a mechanic what it’s at its most overpowered if it can be balanced at all.

I just don’t like Custom Combos because despite the supposed “freedom” they’re supposed to give you, they’re inevitably optimized for the most damage and thus you never really see anything different done with them despite all that could be done because it’s not what you “should” be doing when you use it. That and the invincibility for just activating is often too long for the relatively small amount of meter needed to use them; you shouldn’t be able to blow-through punish things, often in mid-air no less, for a sizable amount of damage with basically no risk from like half of a full bar.

At least Yun’s Genei-Jin now costs an entire standard bar of super in USF4 given it’s an already powerful option in a game that’s otherwise filled with mediocrity and shit that doesn’t work. That not being his fault doesn’t make me dislike him less though.

I thought Jun was alive again as “Unknown” or something as of Tekken Tag (2) though.

Also, besides what Hatred Edge said about Gen, you can add “used the Shun Goku Satsu on Bison and Gill, who both just resurrected from it” to his list of failures if you count either of those endings as “canon”. It seems like the only people Akuma can actually kill are people he’s not actually trying to, like the people who accidentally get in the way of his training. This is (doubly) funny because unlike Ogre, Akuma actually can be sociable, which is like the only interesting thing about the current form of him. They just never focus on it because he “has” to be the ultimate bad-ass or whatever.

To me that’s fucking boring, which is part of why Oni’s character design is so dumb (to me).

Uhh… Ibuki’s kunai’s are part of the reason she doesn’t give a fuck about Delayed Wakeup in Ultra.

(Oh, really?)

I haven’t really been paying attention to Ultra at all, so thanks for correcting me. I stopped caring about SF4 (and UMvC3) somewhere around mid-to-late 2013, probably slightly before Ultra was announced.

The Damed. That’s the main redeemable thing about Akuma. He can hold a conversation with people and be more than a uber god tier badass. I believe Elena befriends him in her USFIV ending and his Cameos in that SF2 world warrior anime were funny.

Not officially confirmed.

Unknown is supposedly Jun’s dark side, but the Tekken Tag series isn’t canon anyway so you can just disregard that.

See? Everyone loves Juri.

Psycho chicks are the best. Full of surprises, powerful, witty, dangerous and sexy. Can’t go wrong here.

(Oh, so Akuma befriends Elena in her USF4, @BB_Hoody? That explains one of…someone- whose-name-I-can’t-remember-right-now’s avatar of Elena & Akuma apparently taking a picture. That is far more interesting than Oni setting off some random volcano and similar bullshit.)

I like Juri for the most part, but I wouldn’t say she’s “witty”. Like, at all. She’s pretty straightforward in the way she talks and acts, even she’s fucking with people for the fun of it and she gets pissed off way too easy to be “witty”, at least for any sustained period of time.

That said, she can never be among my favorite characters because way too many of her fans come off as creepers. Granted, that’s unfortunately the cast with pretty much every female character ever, but relative to the short amount of time she’s been around…dear Hades why. Do not want (to be associated with those type of people).

She also would probably never be someone I ended up settling on in the unlikely event I end up getting back into SF4 (or ever getting into SFxT) just because I dislike having to hold buttons for special moves as well. That part is even more of a shame now that she seems to actually be good–well, better, especially with fucking Honda out of the way–in Ultra.

Oh well. I’m “fixing” at least part of that in theory anyway if I ever get around to doing a game, so…

I see. Well, I kinda disregard everything from Tekken anyway. As someone who hasn’t played game of it since Tekken 3, it seems as a whole that what is canon largely has gotten extremely dumb and way too Mishima-drama-focused in the later games. Granted, it was always Mishima-focused, but all the “twists” with the Devil gene and Heihachi “dying” constantly and Ogre being revealed to be less successful at murdering people than Marduk seem rather tiresome.

Shrug. Thanks for the clarification though.

If someone hit you multiple times in the face…I’m pretty sure you’d be pissed off too and would want to knock that bitch out. Plus…she’s mentally unstable…you don’t think she could crack again at a moment’s notice?

As for wittyness…I dunno. Pretty sure innuendo counts as wittyness among other things. As for her fans…yeah… we won’t get along. I’ll end this here and now.

(Gods, why did you quote all of that when it’s right above you?)

That’s kind of my point: She’s too mentally unstable to be witty. Additionally, innuendo isn’t witty at all in my opinion for the most part–it’s even less witty than many puns are, which is saying a lot.

Similarly, “getting hit in the face” isn’t really an excuse to get so pissed off when that happens to everyone else as well. Even the other Shadaloo character don’t get as pissed from sustaining damage or outright losing and they’re hardly the most stable people either.

Oh well. I’ll agree to disagree.

Slightly more on-topic, as I mentioned earlier, Akuma’s current English voice still grates the fuck out of me. It’s bad enough to the point where I’d rather just keep it Japanese even though I’m normally rather lenient on voices and tend to like at the majority of English voices. The only other English voice in SF4–not counting the characters in Ultra–that bugs me as much is El Fuerte’s just because it sounds too stereotypical even for Street Fighter. Kinda weird how it out-stereotypes even Dee Jay’s utterly bland, implied-to-smoke-ganja ass and his voice. Japanese El Fuerte also sounds cooler to me for some reason on top of. It’s…weird.

Eh, someone is who has mental issues is bound to be more aggressive then the other characters in the series. I’m sure she can take a hit and keep her cool it just happened to be one instance where it happened. Plus she was caught off guard. Meh. Either way I still love her.

As for voices. I put everything in english. I like it. The whole “but the jap is the original” crap annoys the hell outta me. Whatever happened to if you like it…pick it? If you don’t…then don’t. Whatever, just more opinions trying to to turn into facts.

Cammy is still a shitty representation of fanservice to me

Is it because of her leotard?

Alpha Cammy is by and far her best design. It makes enough sense because it perfectly fit the “sexy henchwoman” asthetic. Now, she looks like a generic special ops agent without and practical gear. Even Guile looks his part, particularly in a few of his alts.

Wait! You play Juri on English? I mean, I’m not a Juri fan or anything, but you must crazy to use English. In Japanese, she sounds more threatening and sexier, but her English voice just sounds annoying. For me, I put anyone that’s from the east in Japanese and the ones from the west are in English (except Balrog, Dee Jay, T. Hawk, & El Fuerte, they sound awesome in Japanese).

The only characters whose English bugs the fuck out of me are Akuma’s and Sakura’s. Akuma just sounds like the actor is trying hard to sound menacing, but it fails in that department. As for Sakura, but HOLY FUCKING SHIT IS IT AWFUL! She’s my favorite SF female fighter and my main, but her English voice makes me cringe when she does a special move or an Ultra (tatsu loops are annoying in English and if I watching a stream or video and she in English, it’s an automatic mute from me). What’s worse is her SFxT English voice, that fucking makes me cringe EVEN HARDER (she sounds like the cliché white girl and I fucking hate how a cliché white girl sounds).

Really? I can only imagine how you feel about Ivy from Soul Cal or Felicia from Darkstalkers then.

I’d point out why I like Jessica over erik, but I’ve done that discussion to death. I don’t mind erik. I like eng Juri too much. It’s a nice mixture of sexy, dangerous and psychotic. I get the best of 3 worlds.

(Is Sakura’s voice actually different in SFxT? That’s…weird. Aren’t most people’s voices in that game the same as in SF4 and whatever the latest Tekken that the character appeared in respectively?)

I also don’t get the “Japanese is the original, so it’s the best” thing. Well, I don’t “get” it in the sense that it’s largely just a bullshit excuse that if someone uses indicates they probably fap over Japan being the best. There’s nothing wrong with liking the Japanese voices better, of course, and people are entitled their (shitty) opinions so long as they don’t outright contradict actual fact, but those same people also always hate on the English voices regardless of quality.

Like the majority of things about humanity, that shit’s dumb.

I agree with this. I’ve also liked Cammy less and less due to SF4 just because of the weird, sudden cat obsession they gave her that borders on a fetish. The cat-costume alt is fucking weird; she looks like a shitty version of Kitty N from Bust-A-Groove.

That said, since we’re talking about voices right now, I have to say that at least Caitlin Glass does an excellent job as her English voice. Easily the most coherent that Cammy has ever been in English (though perhaps that’s not saying much overall given how…Engrish she and other Americans have been until modern fighting games).

looks at Terry Bogard and Guile

…i kinda liked the cat costume.

It sounds annoying, because Juri IS annoying. That’s half her personality and purpose - to be a psychotic pain in everyone’s arse.

Every single criticism you have launched against the English cast applies to the Japanese cast just as much. When you hear things like “Here we go!” from Sakura, you do realise that’s what’s being said in Japanese, right?

The English dialogue simply exposes how cheesy and horribly written the Japanese dialogue is. You’re hearing in English mostly what people are hearing in Japanese.

People used to complain about dubs not being accurate to the original, but as soon as companies started translating more closely, they complained that shit sounded corny. That’s not a problem with dubs, that’s a problem with the source material.
