Fatal Fury/King of Fighters Continuity

So I’ve been thinking about starting out the series but I do enjoy looking at the story of a game, even in fighting series. So I was wondering if all the games iN FF are “canon” and their events lead up to where KOF starts or what?

Thanks for any assistance.

KOF and FF’s universes do not coincide. KOF would be 10x better if it had no story at all.

Also stupid topic bro.

Well I don’t think it’s stupid. All I know is that Terry and the others are listed as recurring characters from Fatal Fury and I wanted to know if the two series existed in the same continuity. Sorry to have bothered you.

And no game is better without a story in my book. Even a bad story is preferable to none at all.

King of Fighters has nothing to do with Fatal Fury’s story, though Fatal Fury does have something to do with KOF’s story to an extent with the origins of the tournament. But that can make things even more confusing since in KOF the Art of Fighting characters are around the same age as the Fatal Fury characters and that creates issues with Geese’s involvement and Billy Kane being champion before FF1 but after AOF2 and what not. Its usually ignored, its not like FF and AOF characters do anything in KOF anyway. Fuck KOF imo.

lame.

Hm. Fair enough. Thank you.

Fatal Fury and KOF’s timelines coincided just fine until KOF 97 when things just started getting messed up, mainly because of Geese and the fact that KOF and FF’s teams didn’t communicate their long-term plans for plot with each other.

Now KOF’s canon has been retconned to being split off from the regular SNK universe, although most of the early FF canon still applies.
Think of a branching timeline:

…–Real Bout–RB Special–Garou
…/
Fatal Fury 1–Fatal Fury 2–KOF 94–Fatal Fury 3–KOF 95–KOF 96

…–KOF 97–KOF 99–KOF 2000

It gets even MORE twisted, when you consider the main SNK universe, and the various retcons for Art of Fighting, and the fact they ORIGINALLY retconned Real Bout to take place in 1998, not 1996 in order for KOF to still fit with the FF timeline.
Then after KOF 2000 and the SNK bankruptcy and reformation of Playmore, they basically said “fuck it” with the KOF continuity, put everything back the way it was before, and now KOF has its own timeline so they can put whoever the fuck they want in there…Geese, Kizuna Encounter characters, Billy from Double Dragon.

Naw. Just dream match that shit. Jam a bunch of people into the game and let them beat the hell out each other. Simple and done.

I know KOF’s plot is pretty stupid, and a lot of SRKers are going to go “lolz stories” to let everybody know how big they think their 2-inch e-cocks are, but I say with KOF the story actually is much more important than other fighting games because it does directly affect the gameplay…popular characters have died, missed games, or had their gameplay styles completely changed simply because the plot demands it.

Thats dumb though. Nothing like one of the people on your team disappearing cause they where “Somewhere else.” I have no problem with people liking the stories in fighting games. Hell SF’s is dumb as hell but I follow it and enjoy it, like a bad martial arts epic or something. I just think KOF would be way better without it. The idea of a huge dream match of all your universes games coming together and kicking each others ass is fun. Why make it more complicated then that? It’s one thing Smash does amazingly right.

shrug

I dunno…it does help roster variety and the freshness of characters. One character on your team missing isn’t a big deal, because MOST people who follow KOF have enough favorite characters to fill 3-4 teams over. If you can’t find at least 5 characters to really like in any given KOF I’d say you have absolutely no taste.

If a character starts getting stale, give them one year off, and have them come back with a makeover and some new moves.

That’s one of things I like most about KOF…you don’t always have the same characters popping up ad nauseam.

I mean, I actually like Honda, but who the fuck asked for him to show up in CvS?
Why did they have to put ALLLLLLL the SF2 characters in SF4?
Why couldn’t they have put Mike FUCKING Haggar in even one single SF or Versus game?

Better Honda then another shoto-type.

Really, SNK underused their FF chars. There were plenty of good chars that didn’t get the spotlight.

One of my wishes for a crossover game was for them to just mash the RBFF cast (+Xiangfei and Rick to balance things out) and the SFA2 cast, since those games were my favorites in terms of theme/music/story when I was much younger.

Later KOFs did start to get dull with the chars in my eyes, compared to Orochi Saga chars.

Ah, I see. Thanks very much for the info man.

What is the “main SNK universe”, though? Just all their fighting games besides KOF?

Everything revolves around KOF for the most part. It’s pretty much the only fighting series SNK’s got going for them right now besides the Samurai Showdown series.

Still, I wish they’d get away from that KOF nonsense and take us back to Southtown, so we can see what Mary, Duck, Rock, and the Bogards are up to.

Then I guess I got no fucking taste then do I? I find who I like and I like to stick with em. Instead of takin em out just add more people. I’m with M.D. Fuck KOF. Lets go back to South Town. FF’s more fun then KOF anyway.

Wasn’t Southtown destroyed?

Oh, wait. I think they rebuilt it in Garou.

Either way, I wish they would continue their scraps in Southtown as well. Problem with that is the bad guys who’ve paved the way are all gone now; except guys like Mr. Big.

Just use Kain again.

Yeah, Kain was badass. Grant as well.

It just seems like that wouldn’t be likely, since Rock seemed to go along with him to uncover past secrets or some stuff. Kain’s part seemed to be over based on that. He also didn’t seem like much of a bad guy. Hell, maybe they should have Rock become the new Geese after some enlightening. It’s possible.

Fatal Fury’s been done for about 10 years now so I doubt SNK would just do a sudden revitalise, and I never had any problem with them stripping the KOF roster of certain characters as it added some circulation, besides if they did dream matches all the time people would still be barking the same excuses anyway…
