The next FO needs to be incredible.
I agree on the graphics thing. For me personally the bar is set at “Is it so ugly it detracts from my immersive experience? No? Great.” SO much of an open world RPG is as much about imagination and exploration than it is how things look. It doesn’t bother me if a face isn’t perfectly smooth or if buildings look plain or whatever if it maintains the feel and the overall look helps enhance story telling.
I think Unarmed is the best weapon skill… but don’t dismiss some of the unique weapons, particularly the sniper rifles and the YMC/186 Gauss Rifle. I one shot criticaled the alpha and mother deathclaws at Junction Quarry… talk about open season on Deathclaws.
So, have they fixed the glitch where Veronica does not level up? I mean she’s already the second best companion (imo to Boone who as already discussed is so freakin’ ridiculous it isn’t funny… oh yeah and he likes to kill Slavers DOUBLE BONUS!), she gets power armor, does unarmed… Oh man… Veronica with Ballistic Fist and power armor… yeah… that’s nice.
Oh man you are so right about not even needing to touch the main quest forever… of course its strange, I did stuff that I didn’t realize could be used later in the main quest (like the Boomer stuff) and then they were all like “Hey get the boomers on our side.”… that was easy enough!
its definitely unfortunate that so much focus is put on graphics in the game industry, but that’s unfortunately what sells. it seems like either you have to go big budget and end up rushing to ship a title with eye candy at the cost of tons of bugs and gameplay, or you have to go small budget with casual games that don’t have as good graphics but are still fun. its sad because there is no more middle ground, where a lot of innovation can take place. i guess user mods fill in the gap.
yeah veronica is fixed now and she is ridiculous. i blink my eyes and everyone has already been punched to death.
at this point i fear the main quest will be anticlimactic. even though i tried not to make an OP character, at level 23, my character is pretty OP with all the loot and rewards he’s gotten from exploring the wasteland. benny is going to go down in seconds, and i’ll easily wipe out the legion at the hoover dam no problem.
Well I think you would be offensively strong at the end, but if you are playing on very hard and hardcore, you’ll most likely not be tanking hits at the end unless you decide to drug yourself up. Plus Benny is a bitch, though let’s just say the fun is how you want to deal with him.
Yea the YCS-148 is godlike and so is the holorifle. The proto-type tesla cannon is weaker than it should be but it’s aoe effect is great if you have meltdown and want to go “bowling”. Seriously, I took out literally like 8 soldiers in camp golf by sneak critting a group triggering a chain of meltdowns. Also the Arizona Killer quest became much more epic if you have meltdown, I sort of wish I had a video to show what like 18 bodies flying through the air look like from a chain meltdown in one shot. I personally think endgame, the best long to mid-range weapon skill is energy weapons (if you patch on the 360 that is, I dunno about pre-patch). It’s the best at taking out groups imo and hits the hardest. Though I do think unarmed is best for close-range, just because meltdown hurts me a lot at close range. Melee is very strong but a lot of the perk requirements require a lot of unarmed too so it’s like a huge point sink.
I agree but that’s besides the point I was making. Video games are an audio and visual experience as well, the graphics are very important, even the sound/music. They’re supposed to enhance each other in a complement. This specific, I guess sub-genre, Bethesda is up at the top there isn’t anything forcing them to up their visual game. Bioware is in it’s own sub-genre of this too, so it’s not in direct comp, imo.
Gameplay is paramount, otherwise I wouldn’t have played these games to the point of being burnt out from them. However, graphics and presentation is also very important to me, that entire package is why I play video games.
It’s not about state of the art graphics either, it’s about visuals and presentation that can stand the test of time. I’m a big fan of Borderlands’ graphics and presentation to give an example of an art direction that stands time - like Yoshi’s Island.
I’m usually not much of a graphics whore, although after building my own system I do want to test it out a bit and have overclocks in place to get the max out of it, but NV is just glitchy and that’s the source of a lot of the problems. It’s the same engine as FO3 but it’s very poorly coded. They are also dragging their feet on patches.
I disagree with the gameplay. I feel without VATS is just a poor man’s FPS for people that don’t like FPS games. FO1 and FO2 were both pure turn based games. VATS is an extension of that and what helped set FO3 above all the FPS games on the market. It really wasn’t an FPS based game, that wasn’t what you would play it for. If you want “challenge” and an FPS style, go play one of the many of those types of games on the market. There’s a new one every day but even 3 year old games like Crysis have way better graphics and bring more to the table than NV does.
All everyone does is snipe in this game and maybe use melee or unarmed up close. I took on deathclaws on very hard and hardcore using just unarmed, and you could randomly just die because they can OHKO you if they land a crit or flank you. The Alpha would just kill you period, and took off most of your energy through your block even. But if you just snipe them you win for pretty much free.
The Legendary Deathclaw is a little harder to snipe but you can still get one good snipe in and then switch to This Machine and finish it off. But everyone fights these things exactly the same and I don’t see the challenge in this at all. You can argue that I shouldn’t snipe, but then I can argue that if you didn’t like VATS you shouldn’t have used it. The difficulty is always what you yourself put into it. But I suppose in the next game they should take sniping and sneaking out entirely to make people happy because of how good it is. And then get rid of Unarmed entirely too I guess. I don’t know the point of all this, because either everyone will just find some new broken thing to use or they will whine the game is too hard and then not play it. That’s how it’s been with fighting games, that’s why nobody plays God Hand. People claim they want a challenge but when they actually get it they run away from it.
Not saying you guys are like that, but that is how the majority of people are, and there’s no denying that fact. We all played fighting games and know that’s a reason for this genre dying–too many people quit because they’d lose. That’s why I’d prefer to have a lot of different things in the game and let the player choose what they want to do and place their own restrictions, rather than limit the player. You can always restrict yourself to make a game more challenging, what you can’t do is add more things to the game to give yourself better options. Mods help a bit with this but nobody is going to fix the broken VATS mode in this game because it’s too much work. To me the combat in this game feels so limited, because really it was pretty much always limited. I honestly don’t see the challenge in either NV or FO3 and I never bothered playing it for combat or challenge, but solely to explore and interact with the world, and to try different options and paths through the game. I feel like NV kind of has less paths to really go through now and there’s not much exp in this game either, so you kind of have to do the same quests in the same order every time.
I hope the DLCs change this a bit, but I don’t have much hope. I assume they will just bring in more game breaking glitches and problems. I’m not a big fan of Obsidian.
Oh I don’t know… I don’t know that I play Open World RPGs because of skill balancing… I play because I have a certain type of character I want to put out there and see how he / she survives. To me, balancing is only an important element in any game where people compete with one another.
For example, Starcraft 2. I don’t care if certain units are better in the single player campaign or that there are unique units in the campaign not available in multiplayer. I play the single player to see the story and to have fun with the game engine and see what kind of crazy stuff Blizzard thinks of. In multiplayer though I do want a balanced experience where there’s not one or two broken strats that dominate everything.
In fighting games, some people prefer an open whatever approach, a la Marvel 2. Some people prefer a more mindgame centric game that punishes mistakes and condences tiers (I myself am in this category and play HDR). Some people prefer a combo centric game where characters have weaknesses but they’re largely viable (Super 4). I believe the FG genre has largely removed itself from the death spiral (but it could go back if too many titles once again flood a limited player base) but even in that case, for example, I don’t care that Shin Akuma and Shin Gouken aren’t playable in single player if you go through all the hoops to fight them. They’re a special treat for doing well at the single player… (although can we get an AI that doesn’t just read your inputs but actually has its own gameplan and reacts as opposed to cheating? Probably not but eh…)
At any rate, I don’t mind that sniping is a little OP or that unarmed is clearly the best up close. That doesn’t take away the ability to have fun with other abilities and if anything, opens up new ways to play the game, like Fishjie’s only level up skills I use way… which on Very Hard and hardcore sounds crazy difficult and not my cup of tea but you go for it!
Has anyone here unlocked all the trophies/acheivements for this game yet? I’m on the very last one before I unlock platinum and it’s taking forever simply because I am not very good at blackjack (The Courier who Broke the Bank)
I got them a long time ago on the Xbox. The most time consuming one for me was I believe the pick pocket one, and the Legion quests were irritating because the game kept glitching and I kept losing my saves.
They are all fairly easy to get otherwise iirc.
For black jack (and cleaning out the casinos) remember that it’s based on your luck rating. 7 is okay, but you want 9 (10 with implant) to have it go really smoothly. Anytime you have a 10 or 11 total just put double down, you will almost always get either the Ace for the blackjack or a 10 that the computer won’t beat. The max bet amount is 200, but depending on how many chips you start with you might want to work up to that. About 2000 starting chips is enough to be safe, I usually start with much less though. 500 is enough, although you might want to only bet 100 on that. 140 is enough to start with and just bet 50 until you win a couple more. You can trade in NCR or Legion money to get the chips without trading in your own caps.
I downloaded a bunch of mods. The detailed textures is really, really nice. I think I’m taking a bit of a performance hit on it though. Or it just might be a tad buggy. Still worth it however. At a lower res I don’t have the performance problems, but I like to play on 1920x1080 because that is my monitor’s native resolution, and now anything lower just doesn’t look good to me.
New Vegas Bounties and World of Pain also look pretty good, so i grabbed them. Haven’t seen the in game content for it yet though, I might have to read the readme to see how to start them. I tried the weather mod one but it made night time so dark I could only see two feet in front of me. I hope they fix that one up because I’d really like to have that one.

Yeah… I think I’ll be back on this game possibly trying this out
A good chunk of these are mods. If you grab the FOOK you’ll get night vision in helmets. DK Bullet time mod gives you the bullet time. There is also a sprint and tackle mod as well.
My game is so modded now I don’t even know how to uninstall these. There’s also a sweet radio extender, turns out all the quests are named after some old songs, so someone stuck them in.
You can also of course improve the graphics so they look good. Unfortunately I think there’s either a problem with the coding or my video card (but only for this game oddly) so I get flickering on mountains no matter what it seems. It’s not terrible, just doesn’t look very good either.
I have zero faith in Obsidian and Bethesda actually doing a good job on this game. But the mods save it. Actually the base game is good with a lot of stuff to do, it’s just buggy and kind of dumb in some things.
Soooo…
The DLC is available for PC now. Is it worth the $10?
It’s one of those you lose all your equipment and have to leave your companion behind DLCs. You get fitted with an explosive collar which also blows up if you walk near radio signals. There are enemies you can’t kill without a gimmick as well. If randomly blowing up because you can’t find the source of a radio signal sounds like fun to you, you’ll love this.
Me personally? I think it’s pretty lame. Just download New Vegas Bounties and play that instead if you want a new quest line.
Hopefully, I can get back into this game.
What this man said.
Dead Money is trash, and New Vegas Bounties (mod quest line) was baller, other than the ton of grammar and spelling errors (my eyes catch those instantly).
Dead Money is good for console players. It raises level cap to 35 and adds new perks. The story also alludes to at least 2 future DLCs. One where you’ll likely travel to an area called The Big Empty and one where you’ll face off against another Courier.
There’s no gimmick to killing the Ghost people. If they’re too hard, lower the difficulty.
So then New Vegas Bounties is pretty good? Is it like, install it and play it with my max level toon, or something I should do on a fresh toon?
Yes there is. You need to cut off their limbs, have Dog, or eviscerate them to kill them. Otherwise they get back up.
Well the debate on which game is better should be over by now. This thread has been dead for about a month, and the game was released less than 6 months ago. I’m pretty sure the FO3 threads lasted much longer than this.
I’m going to go back to FO3 probably. Haven’t touched NV for a long time now. I must have played FO3 at least 12 times. I think I got maybe 4 through on NV. NV is kind of a shallow experience, I certainly loved it when I was playing it, but it’s like a really hot girl you meet and have great sex with for 2 weeks and then you just get bored and really don’t want anything to do with her anymore. Eventually the sex becomes a chore and even though you know she’s hot and you should still be pretty happy, you just know you aren’t and it has to end. FO3 isn’t quite as hot but you’re still banging her a year later and enjoying it. Maybe you take a break but you know you will probably go back someday.
So let’s re-poll. NV or FO3? My vote is now firmly in FO3.
New Vegas hands down; I’ll take quality over quantity any day
