I tried the re-install and I got a crash again. I did the compatability thing and didn’t crash, although I didn’t test long. But I’m about to stick XP on here anyway. It’ll mean I have to re-install stuff, but I hadn’t installed everything anyway so no big.
EDIT-Windows 7 was way easier to install, I didn’t actually have to install any drivers outside of the vidcard. But even the vidcard was pretty solid without the driver.
I can say for sure it’s definitely the wireless card for those problems. I had a feeling it was and that I should RMA it, but the thing cost $28 to buy, and I think it’d cost $10 just to return, and then 15% stocking fee, it’d be a $15 return afterwards. Although money isn’t something you should ever just ignore, in this case, I think I will just throw the card in a box somewhere and just not think about it. I will purchase a USB adapter from microcenter within the next couple of days instead.
Since I of course don’t have net access on the new comp now, I will have to transfer files using my HDD enclosure and other somewhat boring tools to transfer. Oh well, it could be worse.
I guess I will find out soon if my other crashing problems were win 7 or something else haha.
Update: Well, it wasn’t Windows 7, that’s for sure. I believe my case isn’t doing a good job of cooling. I have an air filter for the front so I took that out, and I stuck in another case fan on the side. So now I have the front and side fans pulling air in, as well as the PSU fan blowing from the bottom. I have the top and back fans going out. I set everything to medium speed.
I think also my overclock might not have been stable. I am going to run furmark for 1 hour now. I down volted back to normal voltage and also dropped 25 mhz off of my OC. I’ve left the memory clocks at their normal speeds.
At some point I might go back to 7, although I will probably wait for an SP2 first. I still need a USB network adapter as well, I should probably get that today. The stock HSF is kinda loud on this so I figured I might as well put the fans on medium, but I bet I will get annoyed with that by some point and replace the HSF and drop everything down to low again. The problem is I am not sure how to tell when the heat isn’t being dissipated correctly. My graphics card and CPU are all at good temps under load, so I don’t really understand too much why I get problems at some point. I left my fan on auto and maybe that’s the problem for the video card. I guess if it suddenly spikes up the fan isn’t quick enough to keep up? Maybe I should autoset the fan to 50…it is at 40 regularly and 51 on furmark is what it goes up to. I figured I was being conservative with the OC so it shouldn’t have been a problem, but perhaps I screwed it up.
Edit on Gameplay: The bars really do go down slowly on Hardcore mode. I think my box glitched if the rates are supposed to be the same, as they are somewhat unnoticeable actually as they are. I never had to really sleep on xbox either, but whenever I slept I’d wake up starving and dehydrated.
