Fallout: New Vegas

This machine with hand-loaded JSP rounds (+50% damage to everything) is godlike. once i got it, was the only weapon i used.
“Well This Machine Kills Commies”

I would wonder how that would work with say a perk like Jury Rigging that requires a 90 repair. Obviously as you level you get your 90 repair and take Jury Rigging, when your reset and keep your perks, would Jury Rigging still work since you wouldn’t have the same skill amounts? I wonder how the game figures that out, does it just say you have the perk and voila? Because in that case, with jury rigging and some of the survival perks, hardcore mode become infintely easier. But if the game keeps track of your skills and says “You don’t have the skills for that perk” and disables it… that’d be smart… Just something I’m curious about. And where is this “This Machine” and what kind of weapon is it?

Also while I’m thinking about it, since your level resets and you don’t keep your skills, you wouldn’t take stuff like the extra skill point perk and the extra skill point from books perk while you were doing this powerlevel workaround either… Man that could be really broken…

Pretty sure the requirements for the perk only apply when taking it, except for the sex based ones (If you take Lady Killer then switch to a girl it doesn’t work) since it’s just a conversation trigger. So I’d bet Jury Rigging still works and anything else with requirements do too.

Realize though, it takes somewhere near 2500 repetitions to level to 30 using this tactic, so have some free time or a macro set up

On PC I’m pretty sure it’d be faster to just use the console to give yourself whatever perks/stats/etc you wanted, but for Console players this is probably your only choice

for example open the console, type “player.addperk 00165815” and viola, you have the jury rigging perk. And from what I gather, after customizing yourself just save and restart the game, and your character is able to receive achievements again (it only disables it for that one session)

Also, Odo from Deep Space Nine is Mr. House, and Dave Foley is Yes Man.

lol, seriously cosmic forces don’t want me playing this game.

Got Pushy and YC6, felt pretty good about my setup at level 20 with bug. Xbox then overheated, and RROD is well on its way.

I may be buying a new one now, although who knows, maybe I should just give up? It’s apparently $300 now for a new one with wireless and a 250 GB HDD. I’d need to transfer data off my old one somehow, anybody on SRK want to send me a data migration cable thing?

I’d of course also need to re-flash, but before that, maybe I should play some of you jokers in SSFIV. I’d need something better than an Xbox 360 pad though.

I think I’m gonna go grab a cheap computer off cyberpowerpc (Slide linked me to them). Something under $700. I think they can all play anything out right now anyway. I’ll upgrade the vidcard maybe in the future but right now I should just grab something most likely.

I think I will buy the monitor separately somewhere.

encountered my first game-breaking glitch today. couldn’t get House to accept that i had completed the omerta questline, so i’m stuck on the main story trying to do things the house way. pretty damn irritating; how long has this game been out and we still haven’t gotten a patch? absurd

Anyone have thoughts on super slam? More specifically, anyone know what the % chance of knockdown it gives?

A few thoughts from playing the game quite a lot, and currently being at level 29 in very hard mode (thought not in hardcore mode).

  1. Shotguns are garbage, as is the shotgun surgeon perk. Don’t believe the hype. The riot shotgun is trash. A few people suggested shotgun surgeon + cowboy combined with the lever action shotgun. It’s effin’ trash.

  2. Do not take the Wild Wasteland trait. It cheats you out of one of the best weapons in the game, the YCS. You get a crappy alien gun instead that has a very particular and limited type of ammo that cannot be bought in stores. Once it’s out of ammo, it’s out of ammo.

  3. YCS, Anti-Material Rifle, and the Ballistic fists seem to be some of the best weapons in the game. The Sniper Rifle is also incredibly good with Boone and ED-E during the early levels.

I actually got jumped by an alpha death claw in very hard mode and the ballistic fists + paralyzing palm saved my life. I wish I had taken super slam instead of shotgun surgeon, as it gives you an even better chance of disabling your opponent (albeit temporarily).

  1. Charisma is definitely a dump stat. When you find the remnants power armor, the helmet gives you 8 DT in exchange for -1 Charisma. Since a stat can’t be lower than zero, this means that a character with 1 charisma can wear the best helmet in the game with no penalty whatsoever.

  2. High intelligence is a must for a potent character. I started mine with 9, traveled to the new vegas clinic early, and got the intelligence implant by level 3. The points may seem insignificant at first, but they add up over time. For every 2 points of intelligence you’ll get 30 extra skill points by the end of the game. Educated is an awesome perk because of this, as it’s equal to roughly 4 extra points in intelligence in this regard.

  3. Comprehension is an awesome perk. Even if you never plan to find skill books, the extra 10 points you get from magazines helps out a lot. For example, my character only has 68 points in speech. With a +1 charisma helmet (+2 to speech), the naughty nightwear (+10 to speech), and a meeting people magazine (+20 to speech with comprehension) he can get up to 100 speech if necessary.

That being said, books are extremely important for maxing out your character. There are 13 skills in the game and there are roughly 4 books for each skill scattered across the wasteland. If you collect all of them your character will have roughly 208 more skill points than a character who has collected none (only 156 without comprehension). Even if you only collect a quarter of those skill books, that’s at least 50 skill points you can invest elsewhere.

  1. Jury rigging should be gotten as early as possible. Repairing expensive weapons with cheap weapons is one of the easiest ways to make money in the game. Furthermore, having NPCs repair your weapons and armors is ludicrously expensive. It’s actually more expensive than buying an armor brand new at times! 6,000 caps to repair a lowly recon armor is ridiculous.

On that note, weapon repair kits are a godsend. Always be on the look out for the ingredients to make one: scrap metal, wonder glue, scrap electronics, and wrenches. You save a lot of caps by repairing weapons with kits and you can also make a lot of money by repairing expensive weapons you don’t plan on using (i.e. most of the low DAM energy weapons).

  1. Go out of your way to get the good perks. I personally think ninja is well worth meeting the high melee and sneak requirements. The extra 25% sneak critical damage works well with sniper rifles, and the 15% critical chance works well with the ballistic fists or the pushy.

  2. V.A.T.S. isn’t as godly as it was in FO3. The only V.A.T.S. perks I have are paralyzing palm, grim reaper’s sprint and commando. About the only other one I’m considering is nerves of steel, but I’m probably going to end up opting for super slam.

  3. Have high starting endurance. Your base endurance determines how many implants you can get. I started out with 8, and I still couldn’t get the final charisma one.

Checked on newegg, was actually cheaper to buy and ship off cyberpowerpc, especially with coupons. Got AMD Phenom II X4 965, ATI Radeon HD 6850 1 GB GDDR5, 8 GB DDR3/1600 RAM, and of course some other general stuff like 1 TB HDD, Asetek liquid cooling, some general peripherals. Total price with shipping: $879. Gonna grab a monitor off of Amazon (free shipping). Got my eye on a nice 24" Viewsonic for $179 (Free shipping). So all in total, roughly $1060.

I will put Windows 7 on here, either Ultimate or Enterprise. Should be good for a few years, will probably be a week or two before I get everything set up and running. Wish I had it this week since I’ve decided to take a 4 day weekend this week, but I guess I should get back to working out a bit anyway and there’s football 2 of those days.

I put some Arctic Silver for the Xbox…it is still giving me the same error code though. I dunno if I can stick any Arctic Silver on my new PC chip with the liquid cooling being there…I probably won’t use it. So now I got a tube of the stuff that I have nothing to do with.

I don’t have a specific % to give you, but it procs A LOT. My Legion / hardcore Unarmed+Melee guy has it, and it has saved my ass a ton. Paralyzing Palm is worthless if yer meleeing IMO, as I was rarely using V.A.T.S.

Here’s my advice for a good Sniper/Unarmed build:

Starting Stats:
S - 5
P - 5
E - 8
C - 1
I - 9
A - 5
L - 7

Traits:
Small Frame - Agility +1
Built to Destroy, Four Eyes, or None.

Tag:
Guns
Lockpick
Science

Perks:
L2 - Intense Training: Luck +1
L4 - Educated
L6 - Comprehension
L8 - Super Slam
L10 - Finesse
L12 - Commando
L14 - Jury Rigging
L16 - Better Criticals
L18 - Weapon Handling
L20 - Grim Reaper’s Sprint
L22 - Ninja
L24 - Nerves of Steel
L26 - Stonewall - It’s bugged, it gives 5 DT whenever you hold a melee or unarmed weapon.
L28 - Penetrating Strike
L30 - Toughness

By the time you get all the implants and get access to power armor your stats should look something like this:

S - 7 (+1 Power Armor)
P - 6
E - 9
C - 1
I - 10
A - 7 (Small Frame + Implant)
L - 9 (Intense Training + Implant)

With this setup you can meet the 7 Str requirement for the ballistic fist (with weapon handling) the 6 Str requirement for the Anti-Materiel rifle, +5 skill points from Luck, and have enough endurance for all but one of the implants.

Also, if you get the four eyes perk you can probably get up to +9 perception. The authority glasses give +2 perception and a 1st recon beret or other similar headgear should give +1 perception as well. I didn’t take that trait so I don’t know for sure. In either case, it’s only really useful for getting bonuses to lockpicking and explosives, as ED-E turns perception into a potential dump stat as well.

The only reason I would advise against dumping perception is that you lose access to better criticals (perception requirement: 6), which is probably one of the better perks in the game. Still, you can end up saving 4 attribute points if you decide against it. Actually 5, as you can choose 7 endurance and forego the perception implant. You’ll be completely dependent on ED-E if you do though. That build could probably pump up strength to 9 and take the heavy handed trait for some extra damage, and maybe replace better criticals with a purifier or toughness perk.

Damn, so I was roaming looking for random quest and stuff to do to hit 30, and I stumbled across vault 11.

vault 11

Spoiler

Damn, this was my favorite vault by far. Everything from how they presented the information, how the vault ends up looking, how you stumble across the audio tapes, the oddity of the elections, then finally get the truth revealed to you, along with the long tunnel leading to your sacrifice, the awesome video, the getting jumped, and finally the computer revealing that standing up to it and not sacrificing anybody was the right choice, which suddenly makes the first audio log so much more important.

Seriously, this was epic.

Also, there were 5 people left but only 4 bodies in the entrance; somebody lived!

And I managed to hit 30 and got my achievement, so I can start a new playthrough

I just want to say that I’m loving this game.

And is anyone rolling with high Luck? I’ve got 9 on my guy and he just RAPED Blackjack. I’m banned from 3 casinos within the hour and am walking around with 30,000 caps.

That vault made me fell like I was in a mystery movie. Very well done.

Yo is there something strange about the mission “I could make you care”? I believe I triggered it just fine, but after finding the pulse gun and the rangefinder the dumb ass elder wants me to get parts to fix the air filtration system. Nothing seems to be getting completed when I get stuff for it.

If you have high luck go slots. You can snag a bunch of caps before you hit the jackpot, netting 32000-40000 caps. I got every implant and now just sit around on caps. No point in picking things up anymore. :frowning:

The brotherhood quest is long. If you think you got it glitched, then check the wiki. Only quest bugged for me so far was the train explosive one, since the spy’s conversation never starts and I can’t disarm the damn bomb.

So Eli is one of the DLCs, Burned Man is another. Any guesses on others?

So, would I just focus on “still in the dark” and then proceed to “I could make you care”? That is what I plan to do, but its wack not knowing exactly what the game wants me to do.

fix the vents for the brotherhood by finding shit in the vaults, i think you need to get some high quality HEPA filters found in oxygen recycling of vault…3? 22? i don’t remember, whichever vault had the killer plants

That’s a good guess. I spent a lot of time looking for the Burned Man and came up empty myself. I looked through the wiki and couldn’t find a thing either.

The gate at the Mojave Outpost is closed so I’d bet anything that one of the DLCs lets you go through it and do missions on the other side.

I’m not sure how the DLCs will work on this one because of the different factions and story paths. My Xbox is complete toast though so it’ll be on a PC for me. It’s been going from Overheat to RROD to back and generally shutting itself down. I do not think this is salvageable, unless there is someone on SRK in the NYC/LI area that would like to take a good look at it for me. I put AS5 on it and no luck, and that’s about the extend of my personal knowledge on this.
