Lanius’ armor is badass, wish there was some way to get it…

with how often you hear about the burned man it seems like he has to be in the game, at least i think hes in there somewhere.

Might be in some legion related quest. I did find some burned men, they had like 1 HP each and I just shot them. I will be doing legion next after wrapping up some achievements on this one. Then I might be done with the game until it gets patched better.

I am having a blast but I feel as though I want to start over (I’m really not very far into the game) so I can be a little more fleshed out and I really want to roll Melee with either explosives or guns/energy weapons as a backup. I’m thinking, Melee/Unarmed, Sneak and Guns/Energy weapons or Explosives.

Stat wise I’ll probably focus on STR, AGI, END and INT. LCK, PER and CHA will have to suffer.

if you want to load up on multiple skills i wouldnt skimp on intelligence, getting higher ammounts of skill points per level gain can make your guy much more effective. But if you do decide to say fuck intelligence at least leave it at 4 so you can take educated and nab the 52 skill points that go with it.

honestly the most fun ive had with fallout has been with my new character who has high intelligence and charisma, finding ways to do shit without blasting the guy holding the key is always good, and in combat im much more flexible since i have so many skill points at each level up to throw around. My melee/unarmed/guns guy feels like a boring ass character now.

Yeah high INT/CHA does sound like it’s be fun.

The build I went with is

STR 8
PER 5 (Plus the bonus from Four Eyes and wearing a Hatas well)
END 7
CHA 3
INT 7
AGI 6
LCK 4

I tagged Melee/Lockpick/Repair. I’ll invest points into Sneak and Speech. Probably use Energy Weapon as a backup but I haven’t decided.

Charisma has absolutely zero effect on speech success. The only thing Charisma affects is your followers DT and damage. There is a “nerve” stat attached to Charisma and that’s all it does, as far as anybody knows. Honestly, until the bugs are fixed, I don’t think it’s even worth having companions usually.

Speech is done entirely off of your speech skill. Charisma will start you with slightly higher speech, but you could tag it or just put points in it instead. I like Speech and think it’s a good idea to get it to around 50 as soon as possible, and then you can go to other stats. But you still need to be able to hold your own in combat and use a few other stats a whole bunch. Those mags are rare enough and annoying enough that I don’t like the direction they went with that, you are sort of expecting to swap out equipment and use mags rather than just have the stats for a lot of things.

INT is half a point per. So that means every point you stick into INT you are getting 15 points to play around with over the course of the entire game. So indeed, Educated’s 52 is worth nearly 4 points of INT. I don’t know that you’ll really notice much of a difference otherwise. INT doesn’t hurt but for most people it’s not going to really get them a lot more skills. You kind of have to choose a couple you want to max out. I would say at least one combat to max out, and then otherwise you’re going to probably just not max out the others and put a bit on each. A lot of things in this game require about 50-60 in something.

I always have had Luck maxed out because it affects Unarmed damage and helps me win at casinos, which gives me money, and of course ups crit. However, in this game, especially if you go melee or explosives, a lot of weapons can’t crit or their crit damage is pathetic. So if you want to skimp out on something, and you’re going with either of those builds, maybe ignoring Luck isn’t a bad idea.

Low INT MIGHT have different speech options. I have not yet tested…the original 2 Fallouts were like this but FO3 didn’t really have anything. NV is a bit better about it so it probably does…the Confirmed Bachelor and Lady Killer perks are a lot more useful this time around because there are so many more options now.

I feel like VATS is all but useless now. You might use it a little but sometimes to hack at something up close, but for the most part you won’t be relying on it at all now. Apparently people say Energy is useless too.

So I guess Guns are the way to go this time. You can just gut shot people in Vats or snipe them outside of VATs from a distance.

I don’t think this game is worth playing on console. But the PC version already has a ton of game fixing mods. Also if VATs is so useless, a controller is the last thing you want to play this (or any FPS) on really. You’d rather have a mouse. This game is now either a generic FPS with a shit ton of bugs in terms of combat…or I guess it’s something even worse.

I don’t understand Obsidian’s decisions for most of this game, and their incredible lack of bug testing. I don’t understand how anybody approved this game either, this reflects very badly on MS and Sony as well for letting it through. You can bet Obsidian is going to have a lot of trouble getting a game approved now in the future. A lot of casual gamers and people that don’t play games that I’ve met have heard about the terrible bugs and are driven away by it.

I’ve tested this, indeed it does, your character can be as dumb as a stump at times, especially when speaking with doctors/scientists, ect; your options are downright caveman speak at times.

I’ve had two characters; first game which I’ve completed was focused on gun, sneak and vats combat, which worked out fine. I used speech options as much as possible which was a lot of fun talking my way out of normal combat situations.

However my second playthrough I decided to try something new with a fisty brawler character. I pumped STR, PER, and END to 10 and then with intense training I got INT to 8 or 9 I believe. CHA and LUK were at 1, AGI I’m unsure what I had at. This character has been a ton of fun. Punch first ask questions later; complete opposite of my first character. It’s fun to see how all the same quests can be solved with violence instead of words. Unarmed is extremely powerful, I usually 1-hit KO my opponents (I also use the ‘Heavy Hitter’ perk).

This time I’m doing a lot more exploring, I’ve missed so many locations my first time around…

Tagging survival seems like a must for hardcore mode.

You should really have luck at 10 for an unarmed character, as well as str, because they both affect the damage you do for unarmed.

I think an Unarmed/Explosives might be the best combo. Since there is no big guns the explosives stat actually affects things like grenade launchers, fat man, missile launcher etc, to cover you for distance stuff. Unarmed for close range/no vats. Grenades for mid/crowd control.

My next playthrough is going to be a Legion based Explosives/Melee. I have a few more achievements left, including melee and explosives.

Yeah I will try Unarmed/Explosives, that sounds good.

However I’ve been doing fine with 1 luk lol no complains so far. Of course I can use some intense training/implants to fix that up.

With that in mind actually, next time I shouldn’t start with 10 in any single stat since you can get the implants to increase everything by 1, so you shouldn’t have anything at 10 starting out. Also consider that glasses perk…

I’m testing around to figure out the best build to take on hardcore

Thanks! I already got the interface one but no auto aim sounds nice.

Is there some kind of alcohol glitch? I drank alcohol a few hours worth of play time ago and it still hasn’t worn off (not talking about an addiction).

Man I wish I would have pre-ordered New Vegas. I’d really like The Tribal Pack. :shake:

What’s so good about it?

For the character I’m rolling now (Melee oriented) it comes with the Broad Machete which is a good weapon and outclasses a lot of what you’d find early on. And since it can be repaired with regular machetes, it can last a long time. And the armor it comes with is light with a DT of 4 which isn’t bad starting armor.

9 endurance lets you get all the implants, I think. Speech should never go above 70, and only reason to take repair to 90 is if you want jury rig (which is almost broken-- varmint rifles can be thrown on so much stuff). Good natured is really nice trait, since you’ll probably only use 1 or 2 combat skills, but you’ll use more than that from non-combat.

Boosts from Nerve with charisma are really high.

So I decided to use the Explorer perk to get the achievements to find the many locations… Holy crapppp there are SO MANY places! Especially all along the outer rim of the game map, so many out of the way locations up in the hills and such, crazy; I don’t see how you could find all this stuff without Explorer.

I think I’m going to save my Melee character for Wild Wasteland Hardcore.

Here’s the build I’m gonna use for my current new file.

5.5.7.4.8.5.5.

Traits: Good Natured, Four Eyes (+ 1 Per when wearing glasses)

Take 6 for strength if you want to use sniper rifles. Or you can plan on saving up for an implant.

Damn you need 6 for Sniper Rifles? I guess I can Intensive Train to 6 if need be.
