South Carolina’s Biggest Fighter’s Tournament Ever!!!

What?

The Association of Computing Machinery at University of South Carolina is hosting the biggest tournament South Carolina has ever seen. We are hosting Street Fighter 4, Blazblue, Tekken 6, and Smash Bros Brawl (Teams and Singles). If there is a demand we are also considering Any King of Fighter, Any other Smash Bros, Soul Caliber 4 or Guilty Gear Accent Core Plus!!!

November 7, 2009 - Registration starts at 11:00, tourneys start at 12:00

Wow, that’s a big building!!! What is the cost?

Venue Fee is only $5
Each Tourney will be $5

Well that’s a heck of a price, so what is there crappy prizes?

Well, prizes of each tournament will have a 70/20/10 cash distribution. Due to the economy GameStop has retracted their sponsorship. We are in the works for a added insensitive for our players. I promise you will get more than the average tournament. . Not sure how much or which tournaments but i will inform you as soon as I find out. We have come up with some great ideas for prizes everyone will receive for coming the the tournament.

Wow, cash prizes, participation prizes, and more!!! What do I have to bring?

We ask that you bring your own controller. It is hard to control theft so this make things easier.

BYOC, that seems fair but what are the rules?

The Basic rules are:
These rules apply to all games and are subject to change

The referees can disqualify the player in a round or eject a player from the event for any reason, but here are a few reasons a referee may disqualify or eject a player

*As part of our Carolina Creed, physical threats, racial comments, or inappropriate language and behavior are not acceptable. If you are warned by a referee and are not compliant, you will be disqualified from the tournament. Friendly trash talk is allowed but please be courteous to the other players.

*Frequent game pauses or other “stalling” tactics can result in a disqualification.

*Abuse of equipment (including but not limited to controllers, projectors, TV’s, consoles, etc) will result in the player being disqualified and ejected from the tournament. If equipment is damaged or broken (equipment that includes but is not limited to property of USC, ACM, or of another player) the player will be fined the cost of said equipment.

*If anyone is caught stealing equipment, that person will be ejected from the tournament and the proper authorities will be notified. USC has actual police security with guns and police cars. They will be monitoring the area so please do not do anything illegal or just plain stupid.

*Tampering with or sabotaging equipment will result in the ejection of a player.

*Side line coaching isn’t allowed.

*Turning off the console without permission of the referee will result in a disqualification, and a possible ejection from the tournament.

*If glitches in game play are discovered which gives a player an unfair advantage, the referee has the right to disqualify player(s) that use the glitch and ban the further use of the glitch.

As a side note, there will be no refunds even if the player has been disqualified, ejected, or just feels dissatisfied with their placement in the tournament

Common sense is a good thing, so use it.

We want this to be a fun and fair tournament, and most of all we want all players to have fun.

I can handle all that, but what are the rules of the games.

(Applicable to all tourneys Except Brawl)
All Teams will be round robin. That means all teams will play all teams for a point system. Ranking will be determined by the points.
All Singles will be double elimination brackets -2/3 Matches 2/3 Rounds
Semi-Finals will be 3/5 matches - 2/3 rounds
Finals will be 5/7 matches - 2/3 rounds
Winners Always Keep Same Character While Losers can change.

You guys should think about moving this to the next weekend as this is probably going to split the turnouts for The Quantium X day and this one. Both events would be helped by the move.

I was worrying about that too. We chose this date because of our schedule restraints. We may not be able to push it back, but i will discuss it with ACM at the next meeting. I apologize to the people who are running Quantium X but we may not be able to change our date. Thanks for the concern tho.

PS3 is better for fighters because about every major tournament has it on PS3 such as, EVO, Final Round/Devistation, Some Murtle Beach tournaments(repin’ Justin) Charleston… Plus anyways Fighters on Xbox360 is offensive to all the halo/call of duty players…

For those who don’t know me or my group:

My gamertag is lgakmanl of course, I am close friends of Keyon, Awardtour, and Jamslegs. My group, ACM (Association for computing machinery) are the official tournament hosts of the University of South Carolina. We host tournaments for a couple of reasons:

  1. To gain new members
  2. To provide a fun activity for USC students
  3. To provide a way of networking between USC students and non-USC students

I have been to many tournaments, including Final Round XII. I have been to tournaments that were ran horribly and tournaments that were ran completely smooth. This will be my first time being head of the tournaments because of my knowledge of fighters. I believe the fighters are the original in tournaments. Shooters and other game in tournaments now are just followers.

With that being said, The date was chosen by our group’s president. At that time i had no knowledge of Quantum X social event. This date was chosen because of its distance for midterms and the fact that it is on a weekend that the Gamecocks don’t play. Any other weekend and we may not be able to reserve the building. I again want to apologize to filldoh and Quantum X, but we won’t be able to move the date. I fully support any SC event and would never do this on purpose.

If you need any help with the tourney (running brackets, setup, equipment, etc) let us know. You’re good friends with Keyon, Award and Jams, so you already know that though.

However, for future events, I would like to bring to your attention that the blog I run has a tourney calendar on it. One of its main functions is not only to help players but also to help tourney organizers to avoid conflicts (hell, I might start putting some sort of marker on weekends where UFC pay per views happen, because that has a huge effect in this area). Just thought Id let you know that there is a tool available to help make decisions like this.

Then again, the Quantum thing was just announced a few days ago, so it’s hard to really dodge something like that.

Edit: Just added the info to the blog. It has been added to the tourney calendar as well.

As a side question, do you guys mind if I bring flyers for the SC Tourney Blog and the next Columbia area tourney to this event to spread the word? I want all new players to know that there is rapidly growing and awesome scene for fighting games here and tourneys happen all the time now!

Also, I think we should add Tekken 5 officially and cancel it if there isn’t enough turnout on the day of the tourney. I think it’s a good idea to start getting the Tekken players to come out to tourneys in prep for the sure to be huge bump in toureny players who are excited about Tekken 6.

According to the flyers, I don’t have any yet but I am probably going to print some unofficial flyers!! ACM likes to put their graphic art skills to use. On Thursday, I will definitely bring that as a topic at our meeting. We can have official flyers by Friday!!!

In regards to Tekken 5, I have been thinking the same thing. Everyone keeps telling me that T5DR does not have a buzz in SC so I did not push it. As far as equipment, Gamestop is offering equipment and we have a small budget that we can us if necessary. The only problem I think I am facing with equipment is TVs. We have an infinite supply of projectors at our disposal but I would have to test each one for lag. Again, that will be a topic for Thursday’s meeting.
