The GG community is beginning to lean towards a singles format currently. This will definately help general attendance at first. It’s the simplest of tournaments. That also makes our tournament easier to run, especially for Evo.
Rei and Trag: Excellent ideas, excellent posts. I will take it upon myself to start documenting GG tournament that are held and supported by the community. Could you point me in the right direction of who to forward this information to? Who should I be aiming at currently to show them what is being done, and what more needs to be done to let us be a part of Evo. People may talk with thier pride, but the fact is Evo is helping us by letting GG be at Evo. We are willing to show them what we are doing to make ourselfves a benefit to Evo, and why they should continue to include us.
All ego aside, I’m currently organzing one the larger GG events in the US. We have players coming in from TX, Chicago, MD DC and FL and the rest of the closer SouthEast. This is only one event of many to come in the community. This event is 100% community effort, with absolubely no help (yet) of any sort of sponsorship, pot bonuses, or pre-promised top calibur name players, and also no help of a draw from any other fighting game. This IS community movement, plain and simple. Hopefully proof of this and other events like it will help persuade the Evo Staff that we should be included as part of Evo.
Post from one, voices of many.
Alphkami,
TenKaiGear 15 memebers and growing,
SouthEast (yeah, of all places) GG community,
As far as crossing over is concerned, most smash players just don’t have much exposure to other fighting games. Give them the exposure, and they’ll cross over. It’d also help if the SF purists would put down the fucking torches and pitchforks and give the game a chance for once instead of pulling this “lets not and say we did” bullshit all day.
The CVS2 top 8 finals IMO were pretty good then most finals. Even though the finals of cvs2 wasnt as great as me running through the loser brackets with clutch matches and the match between me vs ricky. It was still better than 3s, ssb, vf5, and I think it was on the same level as ST.
So the games that should stay
Marvel
3S
CVS2
Tekken D.R. or 6
ST
GG AC (Singles)
and for the last two games it should be a toss up with
SSB Brawl
SC 4
Alpha 2 or 3
and for something random. Street Fighter EX 3 LOL
Please keep cvs2. Its a solid game that’s had many entrants and the top 8 is pretty entertaining.
But, instead of cutting games, why not focus on cutting things in the format that take up time/resources?
For example:
I found that some stuff from the evo2k4 format to work pretty well.
Displaying peoples names on the big screen to see who’s playing when.
There was also an estimation chart on when games would start and finish, and when certain pools would start.
I feel that this would eliminate people wondering when they’re playing and keep people in place.
That combined with pool play will help keep people at the tourny setup rather than walking around.
*Display the next 5-10 people on deck that are playing WITHIN THE NEXT 10 minutes(anymore might hint to people that they have time for a bathroom break, which then turns into chatting with a friend for 2 minutes and so on. You know the drill)
Along with that ^ idea, setup on the big screen a side A and B to the room and then setup a side A,B list respectively according to whom is playing on either side A or B. If you want to get “fancy” so to speak you could even label pools.
For example:
Pools Group A:(left side = left side of the room)
Justin Wong / Ino - Pool A
Omar / Johnny Chuckles - Pool B
and so on.
Better organization overall IMO.
Limit BYOC opening
Close it in the morning when pools start. Then open it when semis are happening. This could be during games of 50 or more entrants. Just an idea. But definitely limit the time as the BYOC just crowds the area, or have it in another room altogether.
I think BYOC should most likely be relocated elsewhere. If possible maybe ask certain people staying at the hotel location to donate rooms or see who would be interested in doing so. It would be a tight squeeze unless it was a suite, but it could easily happen, in my opinion.
All the problems of this evo regarding the waits and everything could easily be resolved with more open routes of communication and possibly more visible staff/more staff in general.
I really have no major complaints about this evo, and I am pretty sure I will be around next year.
I think that relocating the BYOC room would make matters worse: it would be harder to call people for their turn, and it would force the players to make unwanted choices.
However, I’m definitely down for EVO sponsored side tournaments, and having a whole day for the BYOC room.
if the tvs are available that would mean they’d wait like 10 minutes tops for their next match.
besides if you cant stand around for an hour and socialize or something oh fucking well.
more tvs for tournament = less wait time = waiting between tournies isn’t a hassle and doing casuals on byoc isnt needed to entertain yourself. that or do what i said and hold byoc on a seperate day, yes it costs a signifigant amount of money for the evo staff (although its probably nothing compared to the payouts), but if you’re that serious about a byoc tourney, take work off or whatever for the extra day before evo. the tournaments get done without interference, and you can still play casuals when you lose! plus byoc gets upgraded since they could probably use the evo tourney tvs for an entire day.
im also of the opinion that hotel rooms make awful tourney areas.
Take a look at NC to show to the people who questions the GG community’s desire to become bigger. We had biweeklies all summer and the number of entrants for GG was just as strong as 3S. We now are trying to have monthlies (September Slaughter being the first) and GG currently has the most people registered. I’m seeing tournies all over the country right now with GG as a major. I wouldn’t say that anybody who keeps on saying that “the GG community is not doing enough to make their scene bigger” is ignorant, but I do feel that they are just simply not paying attention and assumes GG isn’t growing. Well itt is, go look at the tournament threads…
I can’t really say what game should stay or leave because in the end, somebody isn’t going to be happy.
Im easily top 10 in the country and I play to win and ill be glad to beat you in whatever game you play also we didnt ask for a team tourney it was team tourney or no tourney so we took it get your facts straight
anyway I think its ridiculous that GG is on the chopping block when ST isnt
I dont know much about the scene but as far as I know the turn out at almost all the majors for this game is a joke…the only reason its there is becuase its a classic and that shouldnt be enough the game has been out forever the scene has no potential to grow I think its time to let go…
Obviously the only solution is to have small micro chips in the name tags. When your name is called, your name tag zaps the everlasting bejesus out of you so you won’t miss it.
i think the lineup should be like this bare in mind this is MY opinion…on to the list
-3s: no brainer, simply put…i believe this is the NEW ST
-mvc: no brainer either, the community keeps this old game thriving so it makes sense
-ssbb: i feel the community is very very strong even after the disconnection from MLG so it deserves a spot
-gg: same as ssbb, with the local release of AC the scene can grow alot more since it will be accessable anywhere. local release was the key to 3s success and the same for gg’s mainstream released version of gg:(ggXX).
-sc4: fresh namco game, makes sense to have sum kinda new 3d game. plus it would be a way to bring back the sc community since to my knowledge had a chance last year to be in evo but blew it due to bickering about useless things. so i heard wiz canned it because of that…so yea another chance would be good.
-insert another new game here: i think it would be good to attract a new crowd of players from a new game
i think putting in ST HD remix is a not worth the time. i mean if that is the case why not hold hyper alpha 3 or wutever that random new version of alpha is in the collection? lets face facts, ST is ST. period. no need to run to another version cuz last year AE was jus attrocious to watch and play in every way possible. hit boxes are different, sum things dont work bla bla bla. i suggest not go down that same path again…ST is in general a great game however it should be put to rest. it had its time and it is still the new begining of an era for SF in general but its time to rest imo.
cvs2, well its a really solid game but the same problem arises each year at not only evo but other tournaments as well…TIME!! cvs simply takes up too much time even at 1 game! cvs as with ST had its time but its clearly obvious that 3s has completely overshadowed this game in every way possible.
i think tapping into a new market is a good thing however if evo is stated to be a fighting game championship then i would think we would keep it that way no? mario kart was not a huge success however it was an interesting try at a new genre. i think last year out of MK and DoA, DoA actually had a decent following that i was kinda shocked not to see it in evo this year. but i’m sure evo staff had its reasoning for that.
now i may get sum kinda flame for this but, i think perhaps evo should pick up an snk game if at all possible. and when i say that i mean 1 of the newer games like samsho6, kof11, or battle colosium. why? although the snk scene may not all be on srk, they can easily be attracted and can bring numbers. advertise on their many many forums and u got numbers and i’m pretty sure it can work. if not an snk game i can vouch for melty blood vs arcana heart. lol!
i believe that the key to success for a fighter is for it to be released state side, console or not and its community. 3s was revived, then jus simply blew up right after the ps2 release in the states. the fact that ANY1 can roll up to a random gamestop and pick it up makes the game gold imo. as i said above, ggXX was extremely popular the 1st 2 years at evo from what i can remember. after the updated version reload got released hella late it didnt help much. however AC is actually right on time for new school and o.g.'s alike to pick up and get into.
i beg to differ, EVERY fighter has sum sort of footsies, spacing, zoning etc etc. MARVEL doesnt even LOOK like it has any of these basic aspects, but in core game play its all there. same goes for gg, hence imo is the reason why BOTH marvel and gg have high learning curves because of both game’s movement, engine, variety, etc etc. although marvel’s char selection is small(in terms of wut us really good tournament-wise to play), the top teams still have certain or different strats/dynamics to them which make them just as diverse as the gg cast. so what if arario won with basics? justin wins wit the very same basics you just mentioned in marvel. why he chooses not to play gg is his choice and same goes for any other major 3d fighter. to reiterate again, simply put…EVERY fighter has the same basics as old school SF or wutever. just cause they dont have a projectile toss or a DP doesnt mean that the fundamentals are lost, they are simply implemented differently according to the game’s engine.
ST always pulls in good numbers, runs fast, and it’s getting an upgrade by the end of the year, meaning more numbers. It’s also being pushed by Capcom, so it’s very unlikely that ST will be on the chopping block anytime soon. But I think GG will be a part of Evo X no matter what, as long as we show we still support it.
I really dont think the new ST is gonna mean more numbers…the scene hit its peak 244136541684 years ago and it only has one way to go now…and its not up
You mean like when Evo was in Cali, they had a seperate room for byoc. Only problem, when you’re in another room and your name is being called…easy recipe for a DQ.
I think next years line up will look like this
CvS2
MvC2
St 360 version
3s
Super Smash Melee
Tekken 6
Other possibilities,
GG:AC
SC 4
Melty Blood
ALSO, payment options, Mr.Wizard.
Not everyone uses paypal, some don’t know how, and some just plain hate it. Why not other options like google checkout or money orders?
I was referring to GG only. If you like the comparison better, we can compare Smash to Counter Strike, Poker, Domino, or Chess. I am pretty sure some of those have more players than Smash at tourneys. My problem with Smash is that Smash players don’t play MvC2, 3rd Strike, CvS2 and the like, or at least don’t play it for real. So it is exactly like POker , Counter Strike or Domino IMO. Huge numbers that don’t help the SRK community.
You could exchange the words Smash and Chess and have exact the same meaning in the entire paragraph above. That’s my point.
I’d take ST out too, easily. I think it never belonged at Evo to tell you the truth. About the top players part, did you get top 8 at MvC2, CvS2 of 3rd Strike at Evo Finals? Are Justin Wong, Valle and Choi playing GG hardcore? That was my point. And I already took it back by the way. The problem with GG is that the numbers are smaller than CvS2.
Instead of saying that GG and Smash should be out, and since Evo will probably have at least 6 games anyway, I’ll change my opinion now.
I say let’s test it.
For SSBM, the mission is to get SSBM players to join the community. If hundreds of SSBM players also register for MvC2 and the others, and they play at least with a basic level of understanding (to prove they’re for real) than keep it forever. They will have proved that they can crossover. If this dos not happens in 2k8, I say get rid of this bahamoth that will be consuming huge resources to reinforce the smashboards community and not our own.
For GG, they need big numbers to support all the talk. If GG AC gets more players than CvS2, keep it forever. If the numbers are the same as this year or up to 20% bigger, it’s not enough. Let MWC or whatever be their nationals.
So, for 2k8, 3rd Strike, MvC2, CvS2, ST HD (another test), oh damn, I just noticed there will be no room for Tekken or SC. Well, either GG or SSBM should get out then, or have some condition pre-Evo to get in.
How about a mixed criteria? Bar with me now…
If SSBM gets big crossover numbers (very different of numbers per se) in the qualifiers or some other tourneys it becomes an official game for Evo Finals. If not the game is out.
If SSBM is in, them CvS2 and GG go against each other. The game with the biggest pre-registered numbers is an official game. The other is out. Th egreatest ting about it is that the communities will work like hell to increase thier numbers, because they know the competition will be doing the same.
There’s probably a more organized way to make this happen, but I like the concept. Actually, throw Tekken in this too. 3 games fighting for 2 spots. Lots of content for SRK threads pre-Evo as well.
You could be right, but I’ve seen more ST players lately at w2z, and some have been making a very strong showing (the Doyle Bros., Capmaster, etc). New hype has been proven to get more players. But I guess it’s a matter of wait and see.
In any case, with so many people showing interest, maybe Evo should cut only one game from the lineup? or keep the 8 game lineup and replace VF5 with SC4(ugh, I hope not, but you guys want to pull numbers…)? It’s really too early to tell, since we haven’t seen T6, SC4, or ST HD in action yet.
Erm, what’s so bad about Paypal? I’ve been using my account for over 6 years, and I haven’t had any problems with it.
Paypal is hot garbage and I for one won’t use it. They steal money, close accounts for no reason, and fuck charity drives in the ass. I donated to a Katrina relief fund through Paypal and the entire fund was frozen and returned only after a convoluted mess. There NEEDS to be an electronic option besides Paypal, for the love of God.
Also, why would you cut games out of the lineup when you can cut the BYOC? Doesn’t make sense to me to cut tourneys at a tournament when you can cut the casual area.
There is no new tone. I’m replying the same way I did before, the only difference is, I didn’t feel the need to point out any of your new points as being ridiculous (as I did twice in the first reply). That’s obviously what set you off.
Changing what I said to suit your argument does not work. I never said my commentary was amazing. I said that many people enjoyed it. I also never said I was a top player… I said I knew the game. If you want to get anywhere here, don’t change my words and/or meanings to better suit your argument.
The problem is, your comments (both of them that I replied to in that manner) were commonly parroted arguments against Smash by people (such as yourself in this case) who obviously have no idea about the game, or the players, or the people highly anticipating the next one (from our very own SRK community).
That wasn’t a call out. Like I said, I’m still replying exactly the same way, except that you have yet to say something that sounds nearly as uninformed as your previous statements. That’s good, because then we can really get to the heart of the argument, instead of going back and forth.
Also, there’s no need to “win” any argument. There’s two main parts: 1) discussion suggestions for next evo, 2) clearing up common misconceptions. If we can get both of those done in one thread, then so be it.
Yes, as an educated guess (after helping run Evo for 10 years and watching the communities for each game grow and diminish), I am betting that Smash Brawl has the biggest turnout of any game next year. I am also going so far as to say that because of the interest of the SRK community (and the large number of individual players I have been talking to over the last 6 months), there will be more players next Evo playing Smash + another game (3S, MvC2 etc) than any other game has regarding crossovers.
So now that all points are covered, it would be nice to get back to figuring out what we are going to do for next year. Discussion is still open.
CvS2 definitely had a couple stand out moments (the ones you mentioned), but overall, I don’t think the general level of hype was as big as MvC2, Smash, and DR. Still, when CvS2 is good, it’s pretty good.
If we can manage to keep 8 games, then I think that’s a solid lineup. Especially if ST = ST HD. We really need to see if VF community will be any bigger after 360 version comes out, and how both DR is doing, and if SC4 is any good. With an 8 game lineup, it’s so much easier to pick the games IMO.
