Why not VF5?- Look what happened to DOA5. Its player base is focused on XBL. It drew no one. VF5 drew probably the smallest player base in every qualifier. Considering that VF5 will have online matchmaking(on the X360 anyway), I’ll be very surprised if it doesn’t turn out the same way as DOA. I love VF5, but it doesn’t have a future at Evo. Not unless something BIG happens between now and EVO X.

DOA4 not 5 (not trying to be an ass)
DOA draws in way more people than VF does and our scene actually grows and has only really been around for about 3 years while VF’s scene has been around for longer but we pull in way more numbers.
But even then like I said earlier only consider DOA for next year if we pull in 80+ players at our next big tournaments.
Yeah, that’s what I thought. You have these DoA players talking about how big their scene is and how it is always growing. How they deserve to be at EVO. If that is the case, why didn’t they have a side tourney to show how important the game is? To support the scene?
Anyway, getting rid of Tekken/VF/CvS2/GG would be insane. All of those games deserve to be at EVO. Not PF.
Call him what you want, but what he says is the truth.
Adding smash to the line-up isn’t going to do much of anything for the other fighters. That’s seriously all they play competitively. Out all the serious smash players I met during the 2-3 years I was active in the community, I think I met 3 that were actually good at something else, and I’m guessing smash was their side game (that’s definitely the way it was for me). I mean, I guess you could take the “power in numbers” approach and assume that some of them would be willing to put down money on other games for shits and giggles, but don’t get your hopes up.
Anyway, let’s not kid ourselves on some of this stuff. GG isn’t gonna have a bigger turnout than CvS2, 3S, Marvel, or Tekken. Dunno about smash, since that community generally does it’s own thing. Might be a better option than CvS2 due to time constraints or something, though. HOWEVER, trying to use some hypothetical new version of GG as an excuse to not run it is complete bullshit. Save comments like that until something new is actually announced. I also don’t really know how many of the problems within the GG scene can be blamed on the community considering the general bias against the game from major figures of the FG community and what IMO seems to be at least some of the EVO staff consistently trying to fuck over the GG players (I.E. trying to run outdated versions of the game, reducing the main tourney to teams, and changing up the version so close to EVO World), but I’d rather not get into that any further. I’d say that if any cuts are to be made, you should just look at the turnout for each tourney this year and let the numbers speak for themselves.
For the record, i told trag directly that i did not like the tekken commentary, and we are still cool. I think a lot this argueing about taking out games is unneeded. the begining of the thread was just suggestions about how o tighten evo up. some of you are taking the ‘remove game x add game y’ part far to seriously right now.
Whether they play only 1 other fighter or several, Smash players easily outnumber everyone else(3s this year may have be one hell of an exception).
Maybe not the big 4(Marvel/CvS2/ST/3S), but at this point it’s considerably more likely to pull in more numbers than T5:DR, SC4, and VF5.
If a console port of Tekken 6 were out before Evo X, then yes, of course Tekken should get the GG spot(unless SC4 turns out to actually be good and in demand). If not, I’m not sure how the Tekken players will cope with playing an outdated game if T6 is vastly superior.
VF5 is a great game, but it has very little support out here in the US.
DOA has probably the weakest fg community ever, next to SNK heads and MUGENtards.
I’m only taking it far because I agree with the 6 game limit.
I also agree with getting rid of last minute registration. If that means slightly higher reg prices, then so be it.
I also feel that the BYOC room should still be around, but it should close once tournaments start. I can guarantee the tournaments will run MUCH faster. A potential idea: Have a full day (Friday, preferably) of BYOC to run side tournaments, then have it open briefly on Saturday and close it once the majors start.
Why not just stop posting? All this sideline commentary and you don’t do anything for the community at this point in time. And stop shitting on Trag’s T5 commentary. Could he really comment on anything else when the dudes on stage or whoring out the same moves? It was good. I liked it.
Power333 I’ve been playing every game since 2000 and I will call myself a GUILTY GEAR PLAYER. So bet it in any game next evo from this guilty player that doesn’t play any other games, I don’t like people constituting bullshit from not playing a game. If you’re so afraid of learning a game because of a scene for it then you got mad homo syndrome.
There is no need to do that with BYOC. What needs to be done is make sure that al tourny TVs are ALLWAYS in use. We can do this easily, by being more forceful with our DQs and training our evo staff.
It was clear that some knew how to move a pool and run a bracket (sirlin, seth), some knew a bracket but not how to move a pool (dsp), and some were having trouble with both tasks (names i forget or never got).
Gather em all up thursday night and crash course em.
Megaphones, lcd boards, smaller pools, and roped off pool areas are all exceptional ideas, also.
Not the point being argued. I’m very much aware of the size of the smash community and I’m not trying to say that it shouldn’t be played at EVO, but Trag saying that the crossover rate would be huge is an exaggeration to say the least. I’m pretty familiar with the scene, and that’s just not the way it goes. That’s why you pretty much never hear of any traditional fighter tourneys being ran on the side at smash events.
Considering the fact that A) broken-ass T5.0 was still the tourney standard up until the DR console release and B)DR is still a relatively good game, I doubt the Tekken scene would make that much of a fuss about playing a slightly outdated game for another year (assuming T6 isn’t on console at that point). But I dunno, I’m not a real Tekken player.
I just don’t know how tolerant the Tekken players will be if they have to play an outdated game again, or if they’ll want to go for something else instead.
I’ve quoted only this part about disqualifications because it’s the one thing I want to change the most about Evo.
We don’t need more consoles. I would estimate that at least 30% of the time a console is going unused because the judges are looking for people to play their match. The guy you need may be standing right next to you, but his opponent is missing or he needs to find someone to get his stick back, or borrow someone else’s stick, or go to the restroom real quick, or any number of things which delays the match. We’re going to have to start buckling down on this sort of thing in the future if we’re ever going to keep a schedule (which would fix 100% of the other problem’s people have pointed out, including 1-game matches, running the tournament so long that you can’t enjoy Vegas, not being able to hear your name being called, etc.)
Look for changes next year. If you don’t have a stick, you may want to get one now…
Ponder, do you have an email address where I could send you something? I wanted to throw some ideas your way in regards to how we deal with what you’re talking about at Final Round here in atlanta. It might help.
I don’t have internet access at home currently because Comcast sucks, but I’d like to share some ideas with you about Evo and I can send that stuff from my blackberry.I’d post some stuff but posting from a blackberry is a pain in the ass.
This is the truth, while running ac pools A&B I would tell people they were next when I would call them for there match they were long gone, so i would have 2-3 tvs open while i was trying to hunt down players in either byoc tournies/drinking/bathroom/eating/watching matches in other pools/stayed at another hotel and are late/etc. i just dont understand whats so hard about staying in your pool area when the tournament is running
Making Pre-registration online or mail is the next step towards making EVO more organized and professional IMO. Ive encountered TONS of of problems with emergency registration. At first the players will not like this. But it kinda weeds out the ones that really want to come. Also it opens all kinds of GREAT scheduling avenues. Making the event better overall
